You're going to be paying for a data plan anyway, so why not make some of that money back in a subsidy?

Yeah, I really don't get why you wouldn't buy with a subsidy. You're basically going to pay either AT&T or Verizon either way, so what's the difference whether you have a contract or not? EXCEPT, now there is talk iPhone 5 will be carrier independent! http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2011/02/11/why-a-tiny-iphone-could-be-a-big-deal/

HTC is outselling iPhone 4 atleast in some markets.

It today the news looks more likely iPhone 5 may be delayed:

Please explain this. You'd buy an iPhone 5 with HSPA+, but not one with LTE ? Why ? Makes no sense at all.

Because if Apple release an iPhone 5 with LTE, it will cost more and won't be backwards compatible... right...

Obviously not a factor.
1) I'm perfectly happy with the data speeds I get on AT&T 3G. I would guess the new 4G phones will suffer in battery life. I don't want to give up battery life for network speed I don't really need. If I had to choose I would choose battery life every time.

2) It's not the cost of the phone, its the cost of the data plan. I would guess it will be like the iPhone 3G launch where AT&T forced you into a 3G plan even if you didn't have 3G coverage in your area. Remember the original $20 iPhone unlimited data plan and how it went away when the new hardware was released?

3) I currently have unlimited data with AT&T which I would like to keep although I've never used > 1.5GB in a month. I doubt very seriously this will be an option with the new "4G" network plans.

4) I can wait for a "4G" phone until there is decent "4G" coverage.

4) Me too

Great post :)

My fiancé and I have been holding out since our first gen iPhones. This is a true bummer. I feels it's true. :(

Im waiting til June, if iphone 5 is delayed then i will jump to a nice android smartphone. Many people forget that cellular market has changed a lot and now competition is harder than before, there are nice alternatives, very nice ones.

But the iPhone 4 is still the best smartphone on the market and will continue to be so well past June.

If you want to choose to get an inferior phone because you want to chase after a spec sheet that is on you. That does not change reality.

A 4" display is already the standard size.

Just because Apple has not progressed is no indicator of their plans for the upcoming model. To continue to lag behind the rest of the pack with a little display would be sad.

LOL. Right.

Opinion is not fact. This works on both sides of the argument, I concede.

Still, you cannot say the iPhone is the best smartphone on the market, just as someone else can't say the Atrix is the best. Different strokes for different folks!

You can however state the iphone is the best smartphone on the market for my needs.
