Realistically, Apple could only squeeze in a 3.7" screen into the current form (see pic). They'll have to have some edge space for light capturing. In the image to the left, the most you could squeeze in to the current space is 3.97" and that's with NO edge space (won't happen).

Most Apple can do with the current size phone is 3.7" and that's hardly worth the bother.

Here is a comparison between 3.5" 4:3 and 4" 16:10 widescreen:

4" can fit fine if it's widescreen
16:9" won't alleviate the main problem with the iPhone: The screen is too damn narrow. Height isn't so much of a problem, but the width keeps web pages and images from showing at a decent size. Might be fine for movies, but that's about the only advantage.

The current 49.92mm width is just too narrow for normal viewing. You need to expand in both directions.

I personally don't think that it's too narrow. Anyway that's another issue.
Most android phones out there have a 16:9 screen so I'd like my iphone to have 16:9 also since I use it a lot for youtube videos and movies

Well, that's better than what we currently have, no argument there. :)

was at the AT&T store yesterday looking at the HTC Inspire 4G with the 4.3 screen and compared it to my 3GS. the extra size looks a lot better and the iphone screen looks tiny by comparrison

One of the reasons why I think a 4.0" screen would be good is because:

- The iPad screen is huge and going from the iPad to the iPhone, it does feel really tiny.

I use my iPad sometimes; mostly for development work so it isn't a big deal; but I went to my cousin's place a week back and was using the iPhone; the screen looked awesome but it looked a bit tiny. The icons/UIControls all looked tiny. So I guess, it would minimize the difference in such situations.

Yeah, def. looks like a stretch. Here's hoping tho, I'm due an upgrade this August... OMG, I mean my Mom is :D

Haha

i love the kindle mobile app and a 4.3" retina display would be a very welcome addition for reading books!! (as well as for web browsing, maps, and games). anyone who says 3.5" is fine needs to have their head examined. and i'm sick of hearing people gripe "oh, but the poor app developers will have to redo their apps". boo hoo! if they want to make money then they should work for it! also, it might have a positive effect as 90% of apps that are junk and make no money might not even bother to redo their crappy apps for a bigger screen.

They would not have to redo their apps- the screen would be the same resolution, just physically increased in size. And I think 4" even would be a better option- still significantly larger than 3.5" in terms of area...

The problem with increasing iPhne size is as follows: Apple would have to either increase panel resolution (very unlikely) or stop claiming that it's a "retina display" (because pixel density would drop). :D

I thought the calculations showed that if they went to 4" they could still keep that "pixels are imperceptable" line... which I dont care about anyway.. :)

oh, i didn't know that. i've read numerous times on these boards that apple can't make different sizes because it would cause too many headaches for app developers. good to know that's not even the case. 4' 3" please apple! ;)

It's all moot. Whatever Steve wants, Steve gets

This will most likely be the determining factor as to whether I buy the iPhone 5 or not. I have the iphone 4, but more screen is becoming a strong desire for me. I am picking up an iPad 2 so ill keep my iOS stuff, but I may look into an Android phone with a bigger screen if apple keeps a 3.5" design. Who knows though, Apple always comes up with something amazing.
