Could it have been because the means of streaming at the time wasn't official? I know when Netflix launched on android it was only for certain hardwares. People ported it, but the company was doing all within their power to make it not work. If whatever "box" you speak of was running the official Netflix app, I have a hard time understanding why they'd block traffic to it.
