It is not painted, it is anodized but on the surface like everything else that is anodized. Once you go through the anodization the metal is white underneath. Look at all the rifles of the soldiers in Iraq. Once the anodizing worn off it is white metal. The white model is not anodized but brushed so if it gets scratched it will also show white metal, just a lower contrast than the black.

The white is anodized too. Just like the MacBook pros. But you are right about the contrast though.

Very impressive. Much better than the 4 and 4S for sure. Apple was probably sick of all the repairs and bad press about that. Glad they went back to an aluminum back. I had been missing that since the original.

I replaced my 4s with one months ago.

You've got a couple things wrong or fuzzy on here. Probably should've read some of the earlier posts but I'll teach you up:

Memory Cards are not a plus to everyone. I don't want to spend more money on more things I have to keep track of when I can have enough memory on my device and in the cloud out of the box.

The replaceable battery means a cheaper build quality. Plus I've never had a reason to replace my battery. Again this a preference and not a real determining factor on which phone is "better".

You are correct in your resolutions. But you failed to mention that those resolutions with those screen sizes means the iPhone has 326 pixels per inch to the GS3's 309.

Apple's new lightning connector is All-digital and despite what Samsung's commercial wants people to think most of us know what that means. It means it can dynamically support a large variety of peripheral devices and possibly ones we don't even have yet. All it would take is a simple firmware tweak to allow certain digital pins to activate depending on the peripheral device.

So you're one of those people who thinks its all about MP? They are both 720P video cameras, which will be what the front camera is used for most of the time. No real advantage one way or the other.

The International version is actually a Quad Core with 1GB RAM and the US version is a Dual Core with 2 GB RAM. And in both instances custom ROMs and tweaks are needed for the GS3 to exceed the iP5's A6 performance. And let's not even discuss the GPU which Apple has been the undisputed King of since the 4S.

Congratulations, you have an FM tuner. I too can listen to FM radio through various apps or the web if I chose to. An iPod nano has an FM tuner, I suppose it's superior to the iPhone as well....

In today's market no phone is vastly superior to any other. There are plenty of amazing high end phones on the market. We chose our devices based on personal preferences. Fandroids need to stop pretending they are superior and admit the fact that you prefer Android to iOS. I don't think anyone here has a problem with that. It's just interesting that many don't, instead resorting to belittling another phone's fanbase to make themselves feel better.

Samsung is pushing this mentality which (among other reasons) is why I'll never buy their crap. If I ever went Android it would be HTC for me. But in all likelyhood I'd probably go over to WP8 as I have a feeling Nokia and HTC will start to gain more marketshare for WP8 - and they won't be taking it from Apple.
wow. quite a defensive post. lol.

other than mixing up different flavors of samsung S3, can you tell me what facts i've gotten wrong?

there is no mention of ios or android in my post. they are strictly facts about hardware. you know comparing two things is not an indicator of superiority or inferiority of any. people look at comparison and make up their own decision. nowhere in my post i indicated ios/android or iphone/s3 are superior or inferior.

cloud storage are not plus to everyone. to each his own. i like my data local, accessible anytime. i dont want to deal with slow data speed, lack of signal problem. you mention cost as a factor. memory cards are dirt cheap these days. why is having memory card a bad thing?

yes, iphone has higher ppi than samsung and samsung has a higher resolution than iphone. both are facts. both are very good as people don't normally look at phone screen inch away from eyes.

when did i say having more MP is better? i just stated facts!

i agree, i did get mixed up between US and international version of S3.

"In today's market no phone is vastly superior to any other. There are plenty of amazing high end phones on the market. We chose our devices based on personal preferences." -> I fully agree with this bit. it's your money, your phone and your decision. choose ios, android, blackberry, wp whatever you prefer.

there extreme fans on both ios camp and android camp. my primary phone is an Android and I also have ip 4 as a secondary. I personally use my phone as a tool. Im pretty sure my personal needs from a mobile phone is much different from majority of the population. ios is not flexible enough for ME. I reiterate ME. thats not an indicator of android is being better than ios. it just fits MY needs better. they're just different.

:D

Sure, I completely agree with your last paragraph. Your original post was a response to what made the GS3 supposedly better. I just posted responses to each item listing why neither was necessarily better than the other. To each his own! :D

You would think when the majority of someone's posts are anti-Apple the mods would kick them to the curb in a hurry. I'm not saying this site should only be for blind worshipers /fanboys, but I'll never understand why some who hate Apple spend so much time on an Apple site. Why waste your time?

One would think. :(

Heres My test

I dropped mine from about 3 feet this morning busted the screen

took it to apple and they replaced it for free!! i love those guys!

The vulnerability of the iPhone was always one of it's weaknesses, and it's nice to see that's been addressed.

Now I'm just worried that the quality of the product as a while, such as the paint coming off, will detract from that.
I've had my 4S since October 14, 2011 and have never dropped it. I'm just careful with and don't treat like it's just another phone I've had before. However, I also spent the $99 for the Applecare Plus program that covers 2 replacements in 2 years ($50 deductible). Haven't need to use it yet. My wife, however, needed to for a single crack on the corner of the phone... since it was a single break, they waived the $50 (!) as they could tell she didn't try to damage the phone to get another. Boom! New phone for her!

$99 is worth peace of mind!

I like your posts, but since I keep seeing "piece of mind" everywhere (FB, MR, etc), so I think it deserves a fix. I hope I didn't offend you.

On the other hand the 920 will have wireless charging,

The Palm Pre had this. No one cared. Seriously, what makes this an appealing feature?

a FLOATING lens that takes far superior pictures than any current phone,

Remains to be seen since Nokia faked the photos and videos for its promo.

live tiles (which I find pretty damn sexy),

I give MS props for doing something original (for once in their existence), but the problem I see with the Metro UI (or whatever they are calling it today) is it's so stylized that the apps assimilate a very generic look and feel. "Which app is this? I dunno. Oh wait, it's Evernote. Look, it says Evernote at the top." :(

probably other things that we don't even know about yet.

Steve Ballmer Certified Perspiration Detection™? ;)

Haha, haha ... oh, let me wipe away the tears of disparagement ...

You think that the major marketing and PR push for the last two years by Apple is not a relevant argument now? Have you been pointing this out whenever someone says a "retina" device is worth buying?

Resolution is so relevant now that it's almost ridiculous. Especially where Apple is concerned. It's their primary sales pitch.

Aint the iphone dot per inch greater than the S3. The S3 has a better resolution because the screen is bigger...

Very impressed with this little test. Lighter weight and better edge protection go a long way.

Unless the screen sizes are the same the pixel number is not a measure of resolution. I mean my 60" tv has the same pixels as the S3 and it is not as sharp.

Only ppi or pixels per inch are screen independent measures of resolution. Apple's is the highest and best on the market in smartphones. 326 vs 309 ppi

For those criticizing the iPhone 5 for not being a drastic upgrade from the 4S:

Honestly, for whoever says they don't "NEED" the latest iPhone- did you really "NEED" the very first generation that came out? Ok, let's say you did since that's the phone that forever changed the face & function of a mobile device but then did you "need" the 3 or 3GS or the 4 & the 4S? Apple is a company with very intelligent engineering behind it. Not every product they release needs to reinvent the face of a cell phone or redesign the functionality behind a cell phone. As I hold both, the iPhone 4S & the iPhone 5, was there a "need" to make the switch to the latest iPhone? No. There is never any need to switch any phone while the phone is serving it's primary purpose- making & receiving calls..however, over time the average consumer decides this is not enough & demands further perfection & innovation in what is already pretty much the top of the line. So- Apple releases new iPhones to try to compensate for any faults the prior version of the iPhone may have. For example, the iPhone 4 had an antennae problem where people complained about dropped calls. So Apple released an iPhone 4S, building the antennae into 4 separate corners so as to avoid the problem of a person's hand covering the single antennae & causing a change in the pickup of radio frequency, thereby, dropping a call. They added Siri as a PERK but the primary reason a new phone was released was to fix old issues with the existing phone. Then, people noticed that with the iPhone 4S both, the front & back screens, were breaking when the phone was dropped, as both screens were built using glass. So now Apple has made the phone thinner, with the side panels & back built with aluminum so dropping the phone would not allow the iPhone 5 to fall on any parts of the glass & instead, on aluminum, which is much stronger. This is a HUGE improvement from iPhone 4S because this really means that Apple is working towards the possibility of not even needing a case on the phone anymore. Not to mention, how lightweight the phone is, how it's more convenient, much faster than the previous & honestly, looks much nicer. Apple is the inventor of the modern day cell phone. Does that mean it's obligated to change the face & function of every cell phone device they release? No, that's not realistic. It's easy to take each modification made & critique it until it seems like no work went into it but it's with each step in advancement that we are able to reach larger & more drastic milestones in developing anything. If they didn't release a new phone, people would complain. If they do release an iPhone, people still complain. The fact of the matter is we just set our expectations too high. It took years & years of planning & critiquing for Apple to release it's very first iPhone into the wireless market. That sort of evolution does not occur in 1-2 years. Has Apple made very large advancements since then? Yes. The fact that this is the only company this can be expected from speaks volumes on it's own. So do you "NEED" the iPhone 5 if you have the iPhone 4 or 4S? No. But is it much nicer & more convenient than the previous phones? Yes. It is their best phone yet & pretty damn worth it when compared to ANY other phone in the market today. Apple does not release products until it perfects them. Whatever they have in their phone is made to be fully functional, as opposed to other phones who boast large screens but voice memos that don't record over a distance of 2 feet or screens that shatter from a drop of 3 feet. So unless you personally have released a phone that is, in the least, AS functional as the iPhone 5, don't complain about them not releasing a completely new phone. They're people, not aliens. They have access to the same technology as we do & they use that & make sure whatever they release is as close to perfection as possible. They don't release a phone that promises as much as 99% of the phones on the market but deliver only about 50% of that satisfaction. Oh, & btw- yes, other companies release phones with A LOT of technological advances in hardware, however, what's the point when you have many features that function at only 50% of what they should be functioning at? (As mentioned before- little things like sound quality when recording a voice memo or having a screen the size of a brick but making it so fragile that eventually it is bound to break.) You perfect what you have instead of putting all ideas into a single product, releasing it, then having 85 of 100 people complaining because the phone delivers only half of what it promises to. You may not be convinced but there's a reason why millions & millions of other people are. & no, Apple did not secretly brainwash them. Consumer reviews speak for themselves. Go buy your brick & then go buy a case to cover it.

Ever consider using the return key more than once?

Yeah you're telling me. I'm in that "ships 14-21 business days" club. It kills me to watch these fools deliberately wreck one of these beauties. SMH.

Pretty sure they all paid for their phones, ordered them or stood in line just like you did.

So what's the problem?

* memory card (more storage) - 64GB isn't big enough for you? I do like how it's expandable though, but again, the price to pay is the size and width of the device.
I've seen all types of Android devices have microSD card slot, it's not a size issue, but a business decision.

I want to see how the Samsung Galaxy S3 handles when you chuck it into that lake.

Solution: Buy a freaking case for your $500+ device!!
