Surely with all the R&D that went into the iPhone 4, Apple will let the design ride for another year to maximize profitability from the current setup?

I wouldn't be surprised with a spec bump (A5), the move from 16gb to 32gb standard and a redesigned iOS 5.

Just a thought anyway....

You can only do much with the same slate design that changing up the materials being used is now the next way to go. I really hope metal is on both sides and the weight distribution is even. Imagine if your iPhone 5 falls face first with the back pushing gravity faster? I don't mind the evolution to metal after glass. I am not the type that gets all sour grapes and jealous about a "better" iPhone and insecure being stuck with the older one. They are all disposable in 2 years anyway. Several iPhone 4's and 5's will be on Craigslist for under $200 by summer of 2013 when iPhone 7 is out and LTE is our new standard. Just hope metal doesn't bother reception.

I always joke about how iPhone could do everything great except being a phone. We can blame our carriers as well but being in telecommunication is not Apple's expertise. That is something Nokia and Motorola have mastered for 40+ years. What Apple is great at is making a computer and its software. iPhone basically is a computer in our pocket. If it comes down to making a great phone, they would get outclassed no matter where they put the antenna. We can't expect Apple to master pure phone making in 4 years compared to Nokia and Moto who both have a master's degree with call quality and signal.

Well the A5 processor and GPU are a given.
I'm sure the design would change, hence the rumors about a metal-like back.
What do you think will be the logical upgrades for the iPhone 5 then?
Well, there's what I'd like to see and what I expect.

Apple, just last year, introduced the all new redesigned iPhone 4. They're not going to throw all that out this year (maybe next). They'll keep the main body frame regardless.

Apple has taken a lot of heat over their design decisions on the iP4, so one would expect them to try to address some of these issues with the next iPhone.

They're not going to redesign the antenna, but they may coat the metal with a clear epoxy so you can't bridge the sections.

The glass back has to go, but I'm not sure metal is the answer. I can only imagine what that would do to the antenna reception. Same for liquid metal. Maybe a nano-plastic.

They've got to bump the screen size up. 3.5" is embarrassing these days. They can only go 3.8" or so, though, and it will still be less then the competition.

These 3 things, though, will only keep the iPhone 5 from being an embarrassment. They'll have to do even more to put the competition in their place. (new OS, processor, camera/sensor, etc).

So I take it you are a senior executive at Apple considering you know so much of what they are, and are not going to do.

It could have been an incremental design, meaning that the iPhone 4 was a necessary evolutionary step on the road to the iPhone 5 (or 6 or whatever). This is more likely than "Apple invested millions specifically in the design of the iPhone 4." Particularly given the attenuation problem.

The article makes a good point. Now that the antenna is on the outside, there's nothing stopping Apple from making the case out of aluminum.

And there are now multiple sources for the larger screen rumor, which has not been shouted down like the iPad Retina rumors were.

I think the form factor will be the same. There is no reason to change it. If they do something other than glass or move the antenna that's one thing, but the actual dimensions are fine. They've managed to pack a ton of stuff in to the iPhone 4 and it's so thin it's almost uncomfortable. In my opinion there is no need to change the current design.

Things I'm expecting- A better camera is always welcomed, I'm sure we'll see the A5, more ram would be sweet but not totally necessary, higher quality face time camera, an edge to edge screen. Also a sturdier home button.

Things I want but don't expect- ability to use the phone as a plug and play storage device, another button on the side we can use for a customized quick launch (like for the camera or your favorite app), and it would be great if iOS 5 was a huge overhaul. I'm not counting on that though, I bet we get a few new gestures and not much else. I'd love it if iOS 5 had a brand new notification system and the ability to make profiles for your ringers. I miss having a "work" setting and a "home" setting to quickly change my ringer and sound settings- used to do that with my old blackberry.
