I'm sure your griffin will work. I have the powerjolt duo micro and it charges my iPhone 5 fine.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. My 30 Pin AT&T charger with a USB port wouldn't even charge my 5 so I had to try something. Glad to hear I shouldn't have any issues.

Glad to hear other people are having better luck that I am!

I've got a Kenwood KDC-MP438U (basic 3rd party in dash cd/mp3 player) that I've had since 2008. The USB plug ("with iPod support!) has served me well since my 2G iPhone . . .unfortunately I'm no longer able to charge over USB. The music controls still work as they always have (great for stock music app as long as you're not using iTunes Match), but I'm now getting the yellow caution symbol and a message that says charging is not supported with this accessory.

I read a forum on another site that suggested that the iPhone 5's charging requirements seem to mimic those of the iPad 2/new iPad, which require higher voltage/current (amps) than normal USB devices.

Does this seem accurate to anyone who might be better versed in this topic than I am?

My work around was ordering an iPad compatible usb car charger, and switching to the 3.5mm audio input jack on my dash . . .there are cables everywhere.

If my Jeep weren't running on 212K miles, I'd invest in a new dash unit, but under the circumstances that seems like kind of a waste.

I have a brand new Hyundai Elantra (2013) that has a built-in USB port. I plugged in Lightning-->USB cable to my iPhone 5, expecting it to charge. Nada. The battery icon flashes like it's charging for a few seconds, stops, then runs off battery.

So then I tried my old iPhone car charger, which has an extra USB port to charge an additional device. Plugged the Lighting cable into that too. Nada.

I was hoping this would keep me charged in the car until I get the 30 PIN adapter to use with the Hyundai-specific cable (that lets me control music via the steering wheel).

I repeated this with all 4(!) Lighting cables that I've received between yesterday and today. They all work fine on my PC or wall charger.

Anyone experience this? Very frustrating.

I have the exact same car as OP. I also tried plugging in directly to the USB port and saw the same flashing on and off charging symbol. I'm hoping that when the adapter is available. It'll fix this.

nooooooo I have the 2011 Elantra.......

so it's not going to work for me without the damn adapter (that doesn't exist yet??)

I was hoping at the VERY LEAST it would charge it.. ugh.

I don't think so. Neither if my chargers work with the iPad.

So I emailed p Schiller about this and got a call from the exec team. They got me in touch with an engineer who wanted to know all the details. I'm going to send them a video of what happens when I plug the phone directly into my car.

They didn't make any promises, but at least sounded interested in learning about the problem.

For the few people in here that mentioned problems with Hyundai, I looked it up in the manual last night and there is a section that specifically says not to use the cable that Apple provides, obviously this is for older versions, but it says you have to use the Hyundai cable. Still hoping the adapter might work with the Hyundai cable but I don't think their system will work without it.

No problems with my alpine head unit. iPod steering wheel controls work too! As well as my gf 2010 Honda civic.

I read that too but havent seen confirmation yet. Ive already mixed up my iPhone 5 and 4S power square but both seem to charge the 5 just fine so Im not sure whats going on.

I'm still waiting for my new car charger, so I'll report back when that happens. I can confirm that the charger that came with my (launchday) iPad2 worked/works to charge my iPhone 4, 4s, & 5 (it's my bedside charger). I'm not sure what that means exactly; my guess is that maybe apple's chargers are downward compatible . . .or possibly magic?

I've read this entire post and it's pretty sad. Something as simple as charging has to be reinvented. Expensive cables needed to perform basic tasks such as charging and syncing. Car USB ports not charging? People spending $19 on cables and replacing car chargers that did work? That $200 iPhone just turned into $300 just to charge and use the device. And now Apple going after ebay sellers. This is madness if you ask me.

These companies have got us by the balls in their ecosystem and when we are submerged they can start charging a little bit more for hardware because the cost of changing ecosystems will be more expensive than the hardware.

The problem is that your car only speaks Korean, while the phone has 3 languages, Mandarain, Cantonese, and English.

2011 Hyundai Elantra....

I've always used the cable that came with the car. The goofy headphone/usb into 1 dock connector cable.

Still waiting for my iPhone 5, but I tried to use just the regular USB-30 pin to charge my iPhone 4 since I had just gotten a windshield mount for when I will be navigating, and noticed these same symptoms you just described.

I was unaware that I HAD to use the Hyundai cable to charge even my old iPhone 4?

silly. I really hope these 30 pin adapter cables are available soon otherwise navigating without being able to charge will not work so well
