Also, OP, I've never done this but I've read about doing it this way: Call Apple customer service number. Explain to them what's going on (be polite). I've heard they will actually get in touch with your local Apple retail store to ensure your trip isn't wasted and your "genius" does what they should.
It's worth a shot. Sure beats another wasted trip and disappointment.
