what's with this obsession over bigger screens on phones? What's the point of a mobile device if you can barely fit it in your pocket, let alone your hand.

Buy proper pants. If your phone barely fits, how does your wallet fit? They can't compete if they have to keep in mind that people like to wear impractical clothes.

it's Tim Cook's first keynote without Steve Jobs
How do you know SJ won't make an appearance? He did it during his medical leave and he could as well do it again as chairman (provided his health would allow for that).

The new phone will NOT have a metal back like the iPad 2 unless it's plastic painted to look like metal as you can't send a mobile signal through metal. Look at the original iPhone or the iPad (1 and 2) with 3G and you'll see that there is a black plastic area where the phone antenna is.
... but you would not disagree that all those devices mentioned actually do have a metal back, would you? ;) :D

Do you guys think 3.7" is even good enough?

I don't think a 3.7" would make me drop the iphone4. only a .2" isn't much.

I would much rather prefer a 4". That would be a instant sell in my mind
Steve Jobs defined a Retina Display as one at least 300dpi for smartphone viewing distances. 3.8" is the largest size that can retain that Retina definition. So 3.7" for a larger screen is about right. There have been other phones with 3.7" screens which probably makes it a more common screen size for LCD manufacturers which is why 3.7" could be chosen over 3.8".

Is it just me that thinks there needs to be some radical change to the iPhone before long.

It's just getting boring now, they seem too frightened to change anything too much or offer anything different.

Same old Same old with this years little tweaks. How many more years can they go on tweaking basically the very 1st iPhone?

Apple: Grow some balls, get some fire in your belly and produce something NEW.

How many ways can a PHONE be redesigned?

Yep let's change things for the sake of change. When people talk this nonsense, makes it clear they have no idea what they are talking about.

The ones who want change for the sake of change probably work in management. :D

depends on the eye of the beholder, thx god :p

widgets would be a start, its quiet embarrassing if someone asks u for the weather and u have to unlock ur phone, enter the passcode, tap the icon, open the app and look while my 5 year old nokia was able to do it from one look at the screen

You could just look up at the sky

My EVO had a huge screen but the Epic's was only 4.0" and to me, that's the perfect size. But again, the only reason the 3.5" screen on the i4 works so well is because of its resolution (it's incredible). If it was still 480x320 then I don't know if I could have adjusted "downsizing" from a 4.3 to a 4.0 to a 3.5....The res made it much easier and if the iPhone 5 had a 4" screen I think a lot of people would be pleased.

Depends on the definition of 'appearance'. I don't think Apple would want him to upstage or undermine Tim; Tim needs to instil confidence in his leadership in the community and having Steve remain a major visible player might not help in crafting that image. Steve still has a role to play, but I think that's best done behind the scenes.

However, he could play a small part. Was it WWDC 2010 where he was literally a compere and on stage for no more than a few minutes at a time? That'd work nicely IMO.

This is totally weird. For months now, I've entered the fray of rumors saying exactly this and I get shot down every time, and in this thread there seems to be a sea change with more users than ever stating that 3.5 is just right, or 3.7 at most.

For the record (again), I'm with all of you. Better screens, not bigger. Keep it a portable, pocketable device.

On another postulation, on looking at that iPhone rendering, I was thinking wouldn't it be kinda cool if they took unibody design to a whole new level by actually having the whole thing be a slab of aluminium, minus glass on the screen? I'm not sure about how they'd be able to get the internals into place during manufacturing, but wouldn't it be totally awesome to have a brushed, all-metal, light, practically indestructible little device that kinda screams, "case? what case? I could stop a damned bullet I'm so well made!" Probably not possible, but that would be the essence of a portable little iHelper.

I think a bigger screen would be cool. I don't know why people think that a big screen automatically means a bigger phone. The way I see it, like everybody has already stated, you can increase the screen size without messing up the "retina" display factor, and without increasing the size of the phone.

If those 2 things stay what they are, I don't know why anybody would have any issue with the screen being bigger.

Doesn't make much of a difference to me, though. I want a new design for the phone, itself.

Apple, please, get rid of the home button. Just a wast of space! Seriously.

Only if they do it in a way that still allows for single hand operation of the phone.

Nice looking. Best of the potential renditions out there.

But I've yet to hear a realistic, compelling argument as to why I should upgrade from my iP4, paying a penalty to AT&T.

I'm all ears/

A 4" phone might be too large for users with small hands (thinking women in particular, who statistically are probably more likely to buy an iPhone than an Android phone); remember Apple is about usability rather than specs. I've got above average hand size and I can get anywhere on the 3.5" screen one-handed with my thumb; at 4" it might be a stretch and I doubt some users could do it without having to start moving their hand too.

3.7" would be a more effective change. Keeps retina designation and useable for 99% of peeps.

I know tons of women with 4"+ screens. Think of all the Galaxy S phones out there with 4" screens... and don't forget the Droid X at 4.3"

The good thing about a bigger screen is a less-cramped keyboard. That's always welcome.

Is it just me that thinks there needs to be some radical change to the iPhone before long.

It's probably not "just" you but I'm sure you don't have many followers. A larger screen would be nice but no other phone, new or old comes close in matching the aesthetics of the iPhone 4 IMO.

Apple seems to be adopting the smoke and mirrors school of thought....

For Apple, having a phone with 3.5" screen is not a problem. The real problem is that Apple has just one phone model. It's clear why Apple prefers to have just one model (you can not have those psychotic product launches with multiple models) but the choice has its negative consequences as well.

The iPhone 5 rumor of it having a screen under 4" seems like a no-brainer. I thought people were already assuming the iPhone 5 would be about the same form factor as previous revisions, but with the screen enlarged to reduce white space. So much wasted white space on the iPhone right now, it is a shame.

You still have to unlock your phone to get to Notification Center...

That is true. I'm actually anticipating the appearance of that feature in addition to a public API for it. We may or may not see Apple implement widgets on the lock screen in an iOS update before making the API public. Though my money lays on it showing up in an iOS update first.

Steve will do the keynote I have no doubt of that if he is well enough.

Steve doing iPad2 was one of the big news stories of the year and gave ipad2 front page headlines all over the world and no doubt sold a lot of iPads as a result. Plus Steve will want to prove the TMZ pics were fake by putting on a great performance.

If Steve doesn't do the iPhone 5 keynote then that really will mean he is at deaths door IMHO

Agree. I was making a strong case in the older rumor threads that no way in hell would it be bigger than 3.8".

Maintain at least 300 dpi as Retina is a strongly highlighted feature.

3.8" is actually wider than 4" Android phones because of different Aspect.

Apple can't do a phone so large that they alienate customers with small hands as, unlike competitors, Apple doesn't release dozens of different sized phones. It has one size. That one size has to work for the maximum number of people.

iphone got boring a long time ago. Apple people are conditioned to accept and worship whatever their masters (Apple) tell them to. A 3.5" display is a joke in this day and age, but Apple could sell these people a turd and they would proclaim it the greatest thing ever.
