Well, all reasonable possibilities (and some unreasonable ones) have been rumored at this point. So:

We no idea what the next iPhone will be like.

I broke my 3gs a few weeks ago so I'm willing to take anything.
I'm hoping for a larger screen. (On the other hand, I had a chance to use my wife's iPhone4 last night -- wow that screen is great compared to the 3gs -- so personally I would be quite happy if there are no screen improvements.)

For Apple, having a phone with 3.5" screen is not a problem. The real problem is that Apple has just one phone model. It's clear why Apple prefers to have just one model (you can not have those psychotic product launches with multiple models) but the choice has its negative consequences as well.

Looks like Apple is doing just fine and pros outweigh cons EXTREMELY.

Waste of time if it doesn't have a 4" screen. Simple as that.
Look, Apple has had multiple opportunities to increase the screen size and each time, they have kept the screen the same size.

That leads me to believe that one person who likes that screen size is named Steve.

His aesthetic is small, simple, elegant, and thin.

Steve isn't going to supersize the iPhone. Simple as that.

The thing about moving the "full" iPhone to 3.7" is that it does open up room for an iPhone Nano at 3.2" if Apple ever feels like releasing one. 0.5" is enough to distinguish the models in form factor whereas it would have been more difficult between say 3.5" and 3.2". 3.2" itself for a screen is small enough for those who want small, but still usable such that Jobs probably won't see it as requiring sharpened fingers. A 3.2" model could use the old 480x320 resolution so no reprogramming is necessary, the lower resolution cuts down costs compared to the "full" iPhone, and is still sharper than the old pre-Retina 3.5" iPhones. That's not to say Apple will do so, but the option is there and nicely positioned.

Why do people feel the need to say pedantic ******** like this? Don't be obtuse. You know exactly what he means. It's late given Apple's release schedule for the prior 4 generations, and everyone's (including carriers) initial expectations.

I wouldn't be so narrow minded to confine Apple to a "hoped for" release date just because they did it the previous 4 years. Especially, with a phone like the iPhone that is dependent on the introduction of new technologies. I think it's amazing they did it at the same time 4 years in a row. The iPhone 5 will be a great new phone and I can't wait to get one.

Patience will bring all things.

I do not care about Apple. I care about myself and consumers in general. Overwhelming success of Android phones clearly indicates that consumers need a variety of screen sizes. And it's a problem for some Apple fans who have to work hard on convincing themselves that 3.5" screen is just fine even though they would naturally prefer a bigger screen.

You are delusional if you think the iphone screen will stay the same forever! You also delusion if you think you cant make an 4in screen phone elegant(and include LTE) just ask Samsung and their soon to be annouced Galaxy S II LTE.

Countless posts complaining about how a 4":less iPhone would be a waste of time...

Why did you buy an iPhone in the first place?

I do not care about Apple.

I figured that much.

I care about myself and consumers in general.

I'm pretty sure it goes both ways when the company designs a great device. Apple is doing that for many years. Bottom line everyone is happy.

Overwhelming success of iPhone clearly indicates that consumers need a great device and when tey have it screen size is not a deal breaking issue. 3.5" is a very nice number for a smartphone.

surely if the apple event was to be early september then they would have released invites already??? if it doesnt come out in october then im just gonna buy the samsung galaxy s2 - if we all just went and bought competitors then that would teach apple that when us consumers demand a product, they should take our demand seriously.

but wouldn't it be totally awesome to have a brushed, all-metal, light, practically indestructible little device that kinda screams, "case? what case? I could stop a damned bullet I'm so well made!" Probably not possible, but that would be the essence of a portable little iHelper.

This!

Exactly my thoughts. That would be unbelievably awesome.

Little Man Complex? :) Just kidding, he's got the "Magic"

Liquidmetal! Yes, yes, yes!

-liquidmetal unibody enclosure serving as antenna
-A5
-1gig RAM
-Retina screen (4" max, maintaining at least 300ppi)

Hell, I'd be all over this thing.

Can't take issue with it being thinned out with rounded edges as presented here:

apple-cracks-down-on-counterfeit-products-sold-in-nyc-files-law

All this bickering back and forth yet no one mentions battery life? Unless Apple has found a way to power a bigger screen and get more battery life, I am pretty sure they won't change it. As someone using a craptacular Blackberry, I can't wait to see what the next gen iPhones will look like. I love the current iPhone 4 screen so I would be more than content upgrading to it.

Bad Fake

Amazing that those who cobble up elaborate fakes miss the things that make Apple Apple.

Look at the round button. Look where it is. Is it at the aesthetically correct position, relative to the rest of the face of the screen? It is not.

Ive would bludgeon anybody who allowed a gaffe like this into the world.

It's not a competent "artist's impression."

Since when is stating a fact being obtuse? Your acute awareness of big words is obtuse.

Yes, I went there.

I am not saying everyone isn't entitled to their own opinion, but the "bigger screen" at some point will seem to negate the idea of it being something one can keep comfortably in their pocket.

I mean, the HTC Evo just seems like it's on the cusp of being oversized for a mobile phone.

I understand that as these devices are being used more for games and such, and the idea of a bigger screen is something people want, but how much it enough?

This is just my feeling on the matter, so no flaming.

Also, as for the Evo.... 3D? On that small a screen? What's the point? I get it, it's cool to have 3D, but in both the industry I work in and now in the handheld device arena, it still just comes off as gimmicky.

iPhone 5

For once, I hope the iPhone 5 body is a little smaller than the screen. That would make me really happy.
