Which new features will we see in the next-gen iPhone ("iPhone 5")?

3 Things I would love to see them do (everything else I'm okay with or too certain to mention, like LTE)

- 32GB $199 model (cmon, Apple... I know your iCloud is making u hesitant on this but pleeasse)
- Better camera (not super important, cuz 8MP is better than my 5MP on the 4)
- Bigger Display (bigger.... what else do i need to say?)

Since I want these features, none of these will come true... Seems to be the disappointing case every Apple Keynote.

Battery, Battery, Battery.

I give my iPhone 4S 'reasonable use' during morning commute, lunchtime and evening commute/ out in the evening using google maps to find a bar/restaurant.

Without fail the battery will be dead after this.

I need a phone that will last at least 48 hours. If they can produce this I'll be happy! I fear a larger screen and more things will just negate any battery improvements they make.

I don't notice it with the iPad 3 as already has a pretty decent battery life and it doesn't often leave my house!

What I would Like To See In The iPhone5

The following are on my wish list: -

1/ Improved antenae. I work in a poor signal area. Other makes of phones get a signal, just not my iPhones. Even in areas where other phones consider the signal good, my iPhones don't and haven't had a good signal.

2/ Improved battery life. A battery that will last not just all day, but a bit longer

3/ Improved camera. I do not wish for more megapixels, I want a larger, better sensor and lens.

4/ More memory.

5/ I really wish voice mail would stop telling me I have voicemail when I don't. they are deleted voicemails. It does this in areas of poor signal.

6/ An ability to lock the screen in landscape mode for when I am reading in bed.

7/ NFC. This means Near Field Charging, where I do not have to plug my iPhone in to charge it up; just have it near to an Near Field Charger. NFC does not mean Near field Communications; or at least it didn't. Someone appears to have kidnapped the acronym.

8/ Electronic wallet (this appears to be what people now call NFC). I would like to be able to use my iPhone instead of a credit card or debit card. This would mean I don't have to carry a wallet around. Would just need to ensure that if iPhone is stolen, no one else is able to use this. Yes, I am aware there is an app that lets me do something like this with Starbucks, but I don't touch what I consider overpriced, hyped up, rubbish coffee from companies such as these.

you can't get a bigger battery without making the size of the phone bigger. If the leaked pictures of true, you're looking at a ~1500 mAh battery which won't get you anywhere near 48 hrs, much less 24 hrs.

You're wrong. They can easily put in a 2000+ mAh battery - even in the current iPhone 4. It's all about saving costs. Just look at the iPad 3: the batteries are only slightly thicker and slightly larger than those found in the iPad 2, yet it can hold much and much more.

Airdrop and 2500mAh battery
Do you really think Apple will put in a 2500 mAh battery in the next-gen iPhone?

I also would love this, but the issue is retailers adopting it....even if we get NFC....it will be a while before it could really replace your wallet :(

I honestly don't see Apple jumping to 12MP for the camera just yet... maybe they will keep the 8MP from the 4S and then the iPhone in 2013 will get an upgrade to 12MP like Apple did jumping from the 4 to 4S from 5 to 8 megapixels. I see a 4" screen, smaller dock connector, 1GB ram, redesign, same 8MP camera and a slightly faster chip (not A6) being pretty accurate options for the iPhone 5.

Agreed. If anything, I'd hope that they simply improve the low light performance of the camera. Like many others have said, we don't necessarily need a camera that will give us poster sized prints, but we DO need one that can take reliable shots at night or in a dark environment.

I wonder how much is possible if the rumoured thickness of 7.4 mm turns out to be correct.

True, the limiting factor of course is the amount of space left in the phone for a large enough sensor for the camera. I think it may turn out to be like the third iPad is - just slightly thicker than it's predecessor. I personally see no reason to make the phone any thinner than it already is, but that's just my opinion.

I'm predicting (not wishing):

4G LTE - 100%

It has to come. The new iPad got it, all the newest Android phones have it, and all the carriers are buffing up their 4G LTE networks.

Smaller dock - 100%

Seems like Apple will go with a smaller dock possibly for more room for battery.

4 inch Retina display - 100%

Its pretty much set that Apple will release a 4-inch screen iPhone with Retina display.

Larger Battery - 100%

Apple is going to need a bigger battery to drive that 4-inch retina display.

FaceTime HD - 90%

Apple will stay with the 8MP iSight camera found on the iPhone 4S, but update the 0.3 VGA quality front camera to 1.3MP for HD FaceTime.

Bluetooth 4.0 device pairing - 70%

Think there is a good chance Apple will do something big with Bluetooth 4.0. Might be something like S-Beam. There are many other possibilities like a gaming control system. This could be one of the "big" features like Siri and FaceTime.

Quad-core A6 chip - 50%

Apple could either go with the dual-core A5X chip found on the iPad 3 or go all out with quad-core CPU and graphics. Either way, 1GB RAM.

NFC - 40%

Don't feel Apple will go all out on NFC this year. Passbook seems to be like the stepping stone for them. Apple needs time to make NFC right and useful. Android has it, but most don't even use it or know what it is.

128GB model - 0%

Apple will just stay with 16, 32, and 64GB. Don't see this changing anytime soon.

Different colors - 0%

Apple won't go all out like iPod shuffles or nanos with the iPhone.

The S3 just managed to squeeze in a 2100 mAh battery. What makes you think that the elongated 4S, much less the iPhone 4, could even fit a 2000 mAh battery.

The Galaxy S3's battery is smaller than the iPhone 4S battery. The rumoured iPhone 6 battery is even bigger. They should be able to give us better battery life.

NFC can mean anything no one "kidnapped it" i.e. National Football Conference > Nintendo Family Computer > National Finance Center

NFC never stood for near field charging...or if it did it was never formally acknowledged. NFC has stood for Near Field Communications since 2004, when it was established as a standard.

127 people have already voted in the poll. Keep the votes coming. The poll will close September 10, 2012 - so no one can still vote as soon as the iPhone is announced.

It will be fun to see who is the best in predicting :)

I think we'll see most of what you have on there. I'm 99% sure it'll come with a bigger screen, improved camera, smaller dock, gorilla glass 2, and 4G.

A6 chip which is basically the Samsung Exynos chip found in the S3.
better camera.
crappier battery life

It can't get much worse than now, I've got to recharge about 2-3 times a day on average. Always carry an external battery with me to do so. But I think you're right and it will get worse.

By the time that S3 chip is used in the "New iPhone", it will be outdated.

I don't think Apple will allow a newer iPhone model to have worse battery life than an older iPhone model. :)

I could see it being worse if using LTE all day. It certainly won't be better. I wish they'd kept the 4S thickness for better battery life. Oh well.

I think the new iPhone will be a modest bump spec-wise. A5X, quad-core graphics, better camera, Facetime HD, USB 3.0 on the new dock connector. No thunderbolt or wireless charging, same price/capacities. Given Phil Schiller's recent comments on NFC, I find it highly doubtful, though it would go a long way in making Passport useful.

Perhaps the "iPhone 5 only" software feature will be FaceTime group calling, taking advantage of the HD camera and bigger screen.
