Clearly everyone at Apple were looking the other way when that case was being designed.

What's with the holes anyway? They serve no purpose and look crap. Plus it's just a huge invitation for dust and grit to get under there, rendering the cases use, erm, useless.

This case couldn't have been any more of a fail if they'd tried.

~snip~
It's absurd to make a line and only realize they have 100 phones and you are number 300, way worse than going online and reserving a phone to arrive one month later.

Yeah. So right. It was fun to do it for the first iPhone in 2007 but since then I just order online or through the carrier rep, usually the latter because I live in a dead zone and their system never seems to want to process my upgrade order online for some reason. Maybe it will be different this year, since some rep told me to fill in an address with a serviced zipcode (I used my fuel vendor's address!) for primary place of usage. Duh, why is "primary place of usage" even needed anyway, since the whole idea of "mobile phones" is to be able to make phone calls from wherever you happen to be. Anyway no more round-the-block queues in bricks and mortar stores for me. I don't mind going into a store if I'm in the neighborhood of one, but not when it's mobbed for a launch.

Anyone else hoping that the 5C and 5S actually sell poorly to spur Apple on to put more effort into their next devices? Of course I mean poorly relative to Apple's usual launches, most companies would kill for 1% of Apple's sales.

The case with "hon" showing through is a perfect example, they put these little cut outs which basically ruin a nice case but obviously designed it on their pre-production phones forgetting they would have text there. If I'm wrong then it's even sloppier design as that space could easily have featured a larger hole to show the full text or a solid section with "iPhone" stamped into it.

I do hope these turn out to be relative duds and that Apple realise not everything they do is an instant cash machine so that the iPhone 6 is actually a real step forwards. An easy start would be a slightly larger screen in the same form factor - a 4.2/4.3" one would easily fit with a little design tweak and look smarter with less empty space on the front of the phone. 64 bit doesn't really mean or do much for the masses, most use their phone to call/text, read email, check Facebook, browse the web and play simple games - 64 bit technology is going to make very little difference. Better camera is nice but pretty "meh" since the camera is always improved and there is competition that already do better in that respect.

The last thing we need is a taller screen, they have to increase all dimensions, just about every single competitor's screen to the iPhone blows it away. If people are still he'll bent on the iPhone skinny small screen size.... Then have it as an option!! Apple is stubborn and losing market share every quarter

I assume there's no pre-order for the 5s because supply is going to be constrained.

Also, why is everyone freaking out over the 5c? The year behind model has been a HOT seller for Apple. The price is the same as its always been. All they're doing is rebranding that spot in the lineup and giving it its own identity.

Regarding the colors being ugly, that's 100% subjective. Apple's played with colors for years now, I'd trust their data on what they think people will like, over what armchair CEO's in forums think the public will like.

You'll also notice they're not just releasing one phone in day glo orange. There's an assortment. If you don't like orange you can have blue, if you don't like blue you can have white.

There's been talk, speculation, suggestion about Apple releasing multicolored iPhones for years now. Now they're here and people complain saying its such a dumb move. I think people just like to complain.

Are people really excited to pre order a plastic iPhone 5?

Yes. I'm one of them. If you still had a 4S, and didn't think you needed a 5S, and wanted to get a little farther into the hardware ballpark for whatever iOS is coming down the road after iOS7, you'd probably be like me and be happy to spend $200 on a 5C instead of $400 for top of 5S. I am pretty sure iOS7 is the end of the road for the 4S, so time to move up, but not quite time for me to move a whole gen, so I'll take the updated 5 in the form of the 5C. And, I'll have a lot of fun with it.

Sure I have laid out the dough for top of the line in the past, a few times. But not this time. And I love those 5C colors for a change-up. Maybe they coulda sold me a 5S if it came in funk, but it comes in "austerely yours once again" metal and glass so hey, I pass. This time.

They can make the screen larger (both dimensions, not just height) in the current sized iPhone though - there is a lot of empty space and edge-to-edge screens are current tech, I don't know why they don't do it. Most don't want an enormous 5" beast but something just a bit bigger, 4.5" max that mean the phone is easy to use but also easy to read small web text on. I'm a product designer by trade and played with it some time back, 4.3" should not be a problem at all in the current iPhone 5/5s body.

The iPhone 5C cost exactly the same as the iPhone 5 had it been discounted instead of discontinued. Apple is really just trying to increase profits by relying on cheaper materials to do the job. I really don't see why any existing Apple user would buy this thing.

Apple should offer a 4.5-4.7" version and keep the current 4" skinny version. Only moving up marginally (4.3") will cause the same negative reaction as the iPhone 5 only being slightly bigger then the 4S.

by then the 4S should be phased out, I can't believe they're still keeping it around, especially how it can't handle iOS 7 nearly as well as the iPhone 5

and people need to realize it's CHEAPER for Apple to make the 5C then a 5 because of the cheap plastic, had they kept the same iPhone 5 it would have been priced exactly the same way. The color gimmick is just to save $$ and increase those profit margins which Apple loves (like why they still charge $299 for 32GB)

I think you all underestimate the market that will buy these iPhones. In a years time they will be seen all over High Schools, College Campuses, and along the sidelines of little league games. I will bet money that not only will the 5C sell like hotcakes, but they will outsell the 5S. You can archive this post and hold me to it.

Totally agree, the 5c will sell like gangbusters and definitely outsell the 5s.

5s is for existing users, 5c is for new users, that will be the trend.

Apple lost the plot with the 5C.

What is it really - last years phone in a plastic case with a terribly designed snap on back that looks like something from a market trader.

All at a price point that is truly ridiculous.

The 200$ 5C is comparable to the 300$ 5S for starters, second the iPhone 4S will last till iOS 8. Also I find metal and glass to be much nicer, on top of that the phone is thinner and has quite a lot of differences to warrant 100$, I mean you are already paying 550$ for a year old device, why not spend a little more for a brand new one? Makes no sense to me. The 5C seemed like a good idea if it was 0$ with upgrade, but why would you take the 5 which would have been the 100$ option and make it thicker and add plastic? Just seems like apple is trying to rip you off.

That's another point with the 5C - why does it still have a screen which sits proud (as the 5 did), it looks like a poor fit! The plastic case could have had a chamfered top edge that sat neatly in line with the screen. Seems to me Apple are starting to get sloppy - Steve Jobs may not have been the designer but I bet he kept all this kind of thing in check, without him they just don't seem to be trying as hard.

A stupid move by apple. The price is too much

I'm not tracking.

The price is too much, but it would have been better to keep the iPhone 5 around and sell out for the same price?

Personally I'd rather the 99 bucks 5C in blue.

5s is for existing users, 5c is for new users, that will be the trend.

And why those new users would noy pay SLIGHTLY more to up the game and get the 5s?

For 'only' $100 more you get premium Al unibody, fancy Touch ID, new and shiny A7, dual LED flash, and a nicer camera sensor with fancy slomo and burst mode on the 5s

Why holding back with not so great 5c with not so cheap price when it's time to jump ship ane enjoy an experience of the iPhone ecosystem?

I do not LIKE the look of the 5S. I want the 5C. I have a 4S. It's a big spec bump even if it's half the storage space (and I have a 32GB iPod touch to solve that issue, not minding carrying around an extra mobile in my handbag). So this time out, I pay $200 insead of usually paying $400 for the top of the line upgrade. I do not currently need the fingerprint sensor or the extra power of the A7 chip although I'm thrilled they've got 64-bit processing on board, I'll catch it with the 6 or 6S. To me this 5C is a very nice upgrade. It's circumstantial, and it's personal preference. 'Nuf said! :)

The 5c will sell well. Many people will like the idea of indivudalising their phone. They care less for tech specs than the look. This is particularly true in various Asian markets.

Maybe he meant something entirely different...let me translate:

"The iPhone 5C isn't that special. Therefore, it won't be in high demand. And thus, preorder isn't a big deal."

Thanks!!!!!
I needed an epic laugh.
If you feel like proving the conviction of your opinion.... PM me, I'd be pleased to arrange a bet with regards to the "unpopularity" of iPhone 5C.

I still don't see the point of this device in the states. Basically an iPhone 5 with a plastic back, childish colors and a ridiculous off-contract price.

iPhone 5c for China, from the looks of it.

Yeah... kids in America don't use smartphones, stupid Apple!!

Wait...... do they??

Well that sums it up.

Apple shares fall 5% on launch day. Its just too expensive for what it is.

Oh Please. They short it, they buy it back, and then buy more and laugh all the way to the bank next time like last time. None of what they do has anything to do with the merits of the product to the consumers who will buy them. They're rolling the dice as usual, that's all.
