Why is it so unlikely as the headline says?
It makes perfect sense.
Apple is pushing Apple Pay, with Touch ID there is no Apple Pay on an iPhone.

This year will see the following:
iPhone 5c with iPhone 5s internals @ $0
iPhone 6 @$99
iPhone 6 Plus @ $199
iPhone 6s @ $299
iPhone 6s Plus @ $399

5S internals, touch ID, the new iPhone 5C.

Calling it.

The problem with this is that when the 5c came out, it was the intermediate model, one year old internals. Which means two years of sales. If they do a 5S internals phone this fall, it'll be the low end device and be sold for one year as the free on contract phone before being killed off. Hardly worth the trouble -- just keep selling the 5s one more year.

The 6S and 6S Plus being more expensive than the 6 and 6 Plus are now? I don't think so...

Maybe it was just a mistake, as they also show the iPad mini 1, and iPad mini 2 with touch ID on their website:

It's completely different. They just put an iPad mini 3 in all of the pictures. This is a device nobody has ever seen before

The only thing I disagree with is the 6s being an additional $100. If I had to guess, the 6s will be $199 just like the 6 plus. Even for the 6s plus, starting at $399 for the base model is just way too much, especially if they keep the 16gb in the base model.

Apple always keeps around the past two generations. I think the first year the C came out it was the 5S, 5C and 4S. Then it was the 6, 5S and 5C. The C is going to drop off this year if they don't do something. It will probably be a 6S, 6, 5SC. Alternatively they could do like they did the first year and do a 6S, 6C and maybe 5S or 5SC? A 6C in a 4" size would be great news for my wife who would like to upgrade her iPhone 5 but doesn't want to upgrade to such an outdated phone which won't get software updates for very long.

Image is still there on the online store. Someone's going to get an ear bashing. I wonder if they'll announce it at WWDC. Presumably it will have the spec of the 5s anyway so it's no great secret.

I don't get why no one else understands this. The earlier rumor pics even had the pill shaped flash that the 5s has. I think it's pretty obvious.

Yeah, productionwise this is the best solution to keep the C cycle going. no need for development costs, minor adaption to the production process.

Cramping a 6 in a C unit will cost too much. A 6C will appear next year.

the C cycle is two years behind.

The image has been updated with a proper home button and the default 5c wallpaper to show that this is in fact meant to represent an iPhone 5c, and not an iPhone 5s in a case as some have suggested.

If it's got touch ID, Apple Pay, and a 4" screen, sign me up for a blue one for my wife on day one. I'm fairly happy with my iPhone 6, but she already feels 4" is too big and gets jealous of the size of old iPhone 4 models when she sees them.

If they give the c model the exact 5s internals, it won't have Apple Pay. They need a processor with that secure element thing.

The main problem with the current C is the crippling of the memory. Just 8 GB? C'mon Apple. Of course it doesn't sell. Give it 32 GB and a white front and you will have a winner. Base it on the A8 and thats for sure.

I really am hoping they return to the plastic housing. I will buy a C in a second.

It is a much better product, design-wise. The buttons, the hand-feel, the slightly heavier weight, the one-piece design feel you get from the rounded edges, all of it.

I'm actually of the firm belief that Apple intended to revert to plastic sometime after antennagate of the iPhone 4, but the 5C didn't fair well. Got a lot of complaints about being 'cheap', which of course it isn't.

That plastic is easier to make than chamfered edges of 5s. Of course they'll cease the 5s. 5s is more trouble than 5c.

Duh

This just seems so obvious to me. The 5C is to the 5 as the 5SC will be to the 5S; a repackaged 5S with colorful backs.

If that's a 6c with a 4 inch display I'll downgrade directly!
I don't know if there is are others disliking the 4.7 screen size (I'm aware of others really liking it however), but for me personally, the iPhone 5 screen size fits perfectly.

why cant you just use the 5S?? The reason i say is the 6C is more than likely going to have the same internals as the 5S with a plastic body.

Atleast the 5S has a metal body and premium build.
