Why not buy a 5s and buy a plastic rounded case if money weren't the problem? I had a 5 but my son smashed it a few days ago, so instead of getting a replacement I just decided to get a 5s.

I am loving it as the finger print had been soo useful to me as my 5 was jail broken and had the lock screen removed and just pass worded the folders I needed. Now I can just use touch ID. Makes things even better.

No, this thread was doing quite fine actually.

The idea that the 5s's aluminum construction is "premium" or even better is laughable. The ip5/5s uses it because it is cheap, light, and non-conductive. A year from now, all the 5s's will look like year old 5's and all dinged up. The 5c's will probably look new. Apple should use the best material for the job and NOTHING less.

And again we see the master stroke of apple's marketing. Not only have they made the individual feel inadequate unless they have the 5s, but they have convinced their very own customers that they must make others who do not chose the 5s to be inadequate.........you guys almost had me convinced. I had a space grey 32mb in one hand and my Amex in the other. Sure it has better features, and is well designed, but it's still built like a chintzy you. Just in "premium" aluminum.

You guys know that 2 years from now that the difference between the 5s and the 5c will seem so trivial in light of the next generation iPhone that we will wonder why we fought over the topic with such conviction? That day might only be 10.5 months away at this rate. At least the 5c's will not look like they were thrown down the driveway.

Very well said. Probably all true. Aluminum is the cheapest metal.

Apple using metal and glass is what separates build quality material versus using plastic e.g samsung phones.

I prefer metal over plastic because the device feels more substantial in my hands.

Regarding locking the phones.. I keep lots of personal information on my iPhone. You could say its my virtual wallet. I always locked my phones in case I lost it and someone else found it.

Everyone has difference preferences and different priorities.

Just keep in your hand a Samsung flagship and an iPhone 5 (or a Nokia Lumia) : it's night and day.
I like my aluminum iPhone 5, but I just bought a 5c for a friend and I think it's very well done. Definitely not a cheap device.

----------

I am so curious about that why 5s is lighter than 5c. In the early I want to buy a ligher green 5C (I guessed) for my wife, as the phone and jacket weight is a little heavy . But in the end I found 5c is heavier than 5s.

Maybe metal is heavier than palstic.:confused: My wife do not like 5s cold color. Maybe a 5s with a green plastic jacket is a good choice.

Heavier doesn't mean it's heavy.
I think iPhone 5c is well balanced.

Btw, since iPhone 4 every iPhone is a premium device, and this includes iPhone 5c (iPhone 3G and 3Gs were not so good in quality).

5c right for me.

Personally I didn't find the fingerprint sensor and the camera improvements were "must have" upgrades. The form factor, sturdy feel and looks of the 5c, just felt right. I really enjoy the slick feel and the colors of the 5c, I run mine with just a bumper because I like it close to to naked as possible. I thought the pink for my wife would really suit her personality.

For those who keep saying "who would buy a 5c when the 5s is only $100 more?".

Well that would be me. I was in the market for two iPhones for me and my wife. On my new contract, I got two iPhoneCs for $0 down paying $88 dollars in tax up front. If I got the 5s x 2 it would have cost well over $300 up front. In my family thats amounts to a couple weeks of groceries or a 6 weeks of gymnastics classes for my daughter. The $99+tax difference is very significant for many families who have multiple phones.

My wife and I are very happy rockin' the 5c's. Thank goodness my kids are still too young for iPhones.

The 5C will lose its finish as well. What makes the plastic look so nice is that it's heavily polished in the factory. Over time, it will (hopefully uniformly) lose this finish, and get thousands of tiny surface scratches. That's the nature of plastic, especially hard glossy plastic. Soft matte plastic resists and hides it much better.

The 5C is no thinner or lighter than a 5/5S with a thin case, some of which may look and feel more soft, have more grip, and be more visual appealing to some.

It's a decent phone and I do like the way it feels in hand over the 5 and 5S, but cases can solve that (even if 95% of cases are terrible garbage). I just wish all these phones had more grip.

The 5c does feel great. I handled a couple and it not not feel like "cheap" plastic. It really is a quality phone. I like them a lot, the 5c is a great phone.

I am looking for a skin appliqué that would address both of those points actually.

Outside of that, I will use the phone naked weekdays, and place it in an otter box on the weekends when I am active.

I suppose my entire point is that apple should use the best materials for the job. Currently I do not believe that aluminum and glass is the best choice for the iPhone. If the 5s was a larger, faster 4S. I would had paid double the carrier subsidized price of the iPhone 5s. I reiterate that the specs of the 5s impressed me . The phone itself, did not.

I never said it was cheap. People just always say the 5s is much more premium then the 5c. My point is that while the 5s may be more "Prius" because it uses aluminum. As far as build quality the 5c does not lag far behind

Because not everyone wants to use a case all the time. Most cases that actually provide any meaningful protection are quite bulky.

Touch ID is indeed awesome. I think that it is really going to come into play more as payment authorization than a screen lock method. But I am also afraid that it is still a very immature technology, and all of the complaints here regarding it's reliability does nothing but reinforce my thoughts. However, I do believe that in another generation, it will be ubiquitous and flawless in the same way we consider a front camera, bluetooth connectivity, or any other technology that we have come to expect.

And it will likely not until apps and OS's are optimized for 64bit CPUs.
And it is very much like apple to lead the industry and almost force competitors, suppliers, and developers to either embrace or abandon under a virtual technological ultimatum. (i.e. original iMac dropping the 3.5" floppy, USB, Firewire, cloud storage, and any other technology that apple has championed).

We will NEED 64bit phones in 2 years. And I will have another phone by then.

So no worries on my part. I just have an extra $100 in the "play" account to go towards an iPad Air.

I don't think the technology is that immature from being useful as payment system. We have to remember that MR is a small sampling of the entire Mac population. I have had no problems with touch ID. Sure there's the occasion try again but that is few and far between, and I'm sure lots of other people have had the same experience as me as well as the people who have had problems but it really hasn't been wrote about that much like with antenna gate and the like.

I think with software updates this iteration can become pretty flawless and the possibilities they could do with it is amazing.

Looking forward to it. It is a great technology that will propagate to everything.

I agree with you, but surely Apple chose to make 5c in plastic because is cheaper for them to build compared to the "old" iPhone 5.
Maybe it's not just the material, but the process involved too.

I bet that it isn't that much cheaper to build per-unit. Aluminum extrusions are one rung higher than stamping out beer cans.

I bet it is cheaper to replace the 5c machines, and that they last longer, and it doesn't rely on so many outside suppliers..... Lower marginal costs and also allowing faster, easier changes in the future.

Don't do that.
You'll regret it.
Heavier, thicker, fells cheap, hardware from last year, it's not Gold. :D

Nothing about the 5c feels cheap. It's this premium vs non premium stuff. I just wanna know how anodized aluminum is so "premium." It's cheap. Now don't get me wrong I'm sure the 5 a is a great phone, but so is the 5c. I just don't understand why so many people have to hate on it. Mostly because the think aluminum is so premium.

Me ... I'm an Apple fan . I'm not going to dog anyone who has a 5s. It's a great phone just as all the other phones have, but so is the. 5c

I knew this thread would turn into this...

The phone I would buy immediately would be a black 5c with Touch ID.
So I will be hoping for next year and keeping my black 4s at least until then.

I used to have a 3gs and loved the feel and rounded edges. That's what I love about the 5c as well, but I don't really like the colour lineup. A black or grey one would be fantastic.

I'd like to start by saying this is NOT an argument whether this phone is better than the 5s. I have had every iPhone including the 5s Gold. Just yesterday I sold it because they are still fetching 900-1000. Purchased a green 5C mainly because I didn't see a tremendous difference in the 5 and 5s. I also never used a password, ever. For me the fingerprint sensor was not being used. I get that for many it's great. But what amazed me is the feel. I realized I loved the rounded edges and the plastic. For some that may be crazy, but for me I would love to see the iPhones use plastic more often. Just my 2 cents for being on this forum since 2007. I wish the 5S came in plastic! Anyways it's not an argument just a thought. I love the thing, best iPhone I have ever experienced. The case has a nice texture too.

You're not the only one. After holding it in the store and using it, I want to get rid of my iPhone 5 and get a 5C instead! It's so nice! Too bad I can't have them replace my 5 with the 5C.

The more I handle my c, the more I like it. For a forum where every other person is a "designer", they are totally missing the boat.

The c is designed to be handled. The c is pure apple.

The s, designed to be seen and put on spec sheets.

these 5C threads are very positive ... nice choice OP

I found out I was eligible for a full upgrade and went in to the store fully expecting to get a 5s. I ended up walking out of the store with a 5c instead. Personally I just find the 5c to be refreshing and more attractive physically, and I'm glad Apple added some diversity into their offerings. Now if they would just offer the top of the line iPhone in both normal and "c" versions everything would be perfect.
