You do realize weight has a huge impact on MPG right? 100 pounds added weight can reduce gas mileage by 2MPG.

Hmm, well that was the point I was actually trying to make.
Maybe that got a bit lost in translating gas to petrol and gallons to litres and back.

The iPhone 5s will be out of stock because they are busy digging in the gold mines to get more gold for the 5ss.

It is the gold standard after all.

From what i have noticed is most people are on the non-s upgrade cycle. Like when the 5 came out last year, apple stores around where i live ran out of stock rather quickly. But when the 4s came out, I was able to easily get one in the afternoon of release day. I personally think that since there are now 3 colors, people opting for the 5c, and less people on the upgrade cycle, there really shouldnt be a problem getting the phone. I mean my friend who works at the closest apple store to me told me that will get hundreds of phones in pallets the night before.

Please let this be true!

This is was i was hoping as well.

As i stated earlier i got my 4s on launch day walked in to the store in the afternoon was out with my new phone in 30 minutes. A lot of people i know have a 5 right now that would be unlikely to upgrade to the 5s since they are in the middle of their contract.

On the other hand i got a ipad 2 on launch day and waited in line for like 4 hours to get one.

I dont picture many people (unless hardcore into having the newest phones and performance, etc) would upgrade from the 5 to the 5s... even less of those who have the 5 would go to the 5c since there is no difference beside color. I picture most of the people would be pre iPhone 5 are most likely to upgrade.... Only time will tell...

Anyone hear if the carrier stores will have the 5s on launch day like in previous launch days? We have 3 Apple Stores in Hawaii, but an AT&T store is really close to me...

Fair points but its still BS because obviously nobody buys an iPhone to delete the entire OS. You need the OS for it to be an iPhone. If the OS takes up 4GB, you are selling a 12GB phone. Anyways. Agree to disagree. :)

Do you complain in Supermarkets because the displayed weight of a piece of steak is not what you get after you have cooked it, or at restaurants for the same reason?

The steak loses literally almost nothing between buying it and cooking it. It's not noticeable. In this case, 3-4 GB on a 16GB phone is a huge loss.

The OS file size could vary and we would never know how much storage we'd really get.

And actually iOS 7 takes up more space than iOS 6 so, this time you might just get 10GB.

So when you buy a car that they say is going to get 26MPG, but then it gets 19, you just say "well obviously weight is going to have an effect on mpg "?

Nothing else out there is marketed this way. They should put "up to 16GB". Just like your ISP says "up to 25mbps". They can't promise the speed, the gas mileage, or the space.

By the way, what you said is actually really dumb if you think about it. You would rather not KNOW how much space you are getting. I know you can estimate an idea, but you literally just told us that you would rather they mislead you instead of just telling us how much space we REALLY get. That's hilarious :).

A 16GB phone has an SSD with 16GB capacity. They're delivering what is promised. If you don't know that the OS and pre-installed apps will use some of that space, that's too bad.

Saying "up to 16GB" would actually be more misleading since it will never be sold with absolutely nothing on it, so there is no possibility of you having access to the full capacity. "Up to" doesn't apply here since it's not something that is flexible based on your usage. Some of the drive's capacity has to be used if you want a functional device when you open the box. Also, since things like the version of the OS that it ships with might vary over time, they can't say exactly how much free space there is, nor can they customize each SSD to be exactly large enough to ensure that there's extra space just for the OS.

Maybe that has more to do with the "s" models being seen as marginal improvements than it has to do with people's upgrade cycles.

I added a dummy line for $10 per month last year (at AT&Ts suggestion),so I can upgrade every year.No need to have ANY phone on the dummy line at all.
yes,I may be paying a bit extra every year, but it's cheaper than paying full price or near for a phone every other year.

I knew it as soon as they announced no pre-orders...

They set the stage for huge lines and a media blitz of how hard it was/is to get one. Great press for a refreshed model. They get the perception that it's rare, and there is NOTHING people want more than an Apple product that their neighbor can't get (and if you disagree, name any other mass produced product that generates anything like this... you can't).

It's brilliant. Infuriating, but I applaud the execution.

10 bucks says ship times at 1201 will slip to 1-2 weeks within MINUTES.

That's only going to create MORE buzz, and send MORE people that just can't wait that long to the stores/lines.

Genius

Big difference because 4 to 4S was still using 3G so that was a non issue. Now however, many people with the 4 and 4S want LTE, and with their contracts up, will be going after the 5s big time. I'm guessing, and it's just that, a guess, there will be more shortages and longer shipping times with the 5s compared to the 5.

I'm sending my 5 to Gazelle. Perhaps by the time that Gazelle receives it I may have my 5s? And I will go phoneless for a whole week!

Think of that.

Gazelle guarantees the Quotes until the end of October. It used to be October 15 but they extended it I think to match a competitor BuyBackWorld, who also guarantees quotes until October 31. Gazelle is a good service I have used them but BuyBackWorld pays higher prices, so I switched last year and haven't turned back since.

I wonder how long the lines will be on Friday. Typical hype!!

This conversation is hilarious. Can't wait to see what analogy you guys come up with next!

Yeah it's BS. I swear mine came with like 12.6GB availability. Why are they allowed to market it as 16 when there is no possible way to have 16GB free on a 16GB phone.

If you want full space then delete all the apps and iOS and create your own

The majority of non-technical people will see the iPhone 5S, as nearly the same as the iPhone 5.

With the transition from the iphone 4s to the 5, there was an obvious difference in the way the phone looked and because it had a bigger screen.

Every release, there are posts floating around prior to release day claiming shortages etc..

It is a great way to generate hype, for what would be an otherwise "unremarkable" upgrade.

What happens if you lock in a price but then change your mind and don't send in your phone for whatever reason?

From what I understand nothing happens. It is free and you don't owe anything, even if they send you the free shipping kit.
