It's calculated. They want the phone to have sold out. They want you to then want it more because it is. And they want you to wait in line.

And for the seventh time now -- no, this is not true, they want to be able to have supply match demand. They can't just snap fingers and make factories appear. There are only a handful of chip fabs on the planet that can make many of the key components, they literally cost billions of dollars and years to set up, per fab. If Apple could have an iPhone ready to go for everyone who wanted one on launch day, they absolutely would do that. Apple does not need gimmicks to build hype, they are the kings of hype already. Deal with it, you have no understanding of basic business.

Good for who wants to buy...

I am not upgrading (upgraded every year until now) so there is 1 less competition :)

Let's see if I understand the current launch logic on display the last few days...

A. iPhone 5c: "It's still available after launch. Apple is doomed."

B. iPhone 5s: "It's not going to be available after launch. Apple is doomed."

A) Apple doesn't update their products / release new products....... Apple is doomed.

B) Apple releases new products ..... Apple is Doomed

It must be very challenging beeing Apple.

And I guess even they must think... When do we hit the roof?

I mean, they could start making phones 3 months ago to produce like, i dont know 50 million phones...

But say they "only" sell 20 mill during launch. Thats allot of dead capital in stock that is not beeing moved.

Also remember they are also trying to penetrate 2 HUGE markets. China has always been a focus, but whit the resents stunts even more so it would seem.
Then you have Japan where Apple just signed up with the biggest carrier this year.
Thats 120 million potential new customers on that little Iland. Imagene if only 3% of the population buys an iPhone... Thats 3,6 million new iPhone customers in Japan

I think thats why you are seeing allot of smaller european countries not on the list this time for launch. Just to feed China and Japan.

Cause remember we are talking millions here. Imagine someone telling you to produce 6 million phones to release during the year. These are INSANE numbers. Imagine the produclines, imagine the logistics. They are mindbogelong numbers to me at least.

Exactly. Launches like these are not just simplified by "starting production a few months earlier" or by "producing 20 million more just to be sure". We can't expect everyone to know or understand how these things work, but this whining that Apple "screws up" its launches is getting tedious.

That put all these stupid gadgets into perspective. I always thought the same thing but didn't know how properly to phrase it, nor did I have a personal anecdote like you do.

Sorry to hear :(
That wasn't a personal anecdote. It was a verse from a song in "The Book of Mormon".

Why does this happen EVERY year? Apple, why the hell can't you figure this supply chain thing out and start a month of two earlier than normal - or add a few production facilities/expand teams or something?
The laws of supply and demand include demand.

What are you talking about? Even though the case is largely the same (with the exception of the home button) _everything_ inside that case is completely new:

1. New A7 chip
2. New M7 chip
3. New Camera
4. New Flash
5. New Fingerprint Sensor

"Minor Variant" my ass.

I swear that most of the posters on this forum surely must be plants by Samsung and Microsoft....

OMG a new chip, like Intel doesn't pull that off dozens of times a year!
OMG another new chip, like AMD doesn't pull that off many times a year!
OMG a new camera, as if new cameras don't come out many times a year!
OMG a new flash, as if that was a huge technological breakthrough to increase the amounts, and change the wavelength, of LEDs.
OMG, new fingerprint sensor, because if there's one thing I need in a phone, it is something that I currently have little use for (not to say there won't be one, but without NFC, why would you need it?)

Yeah, there's new parts. But one would expect Apple would know how to build things in a timely fashion, no?

The things that matter: Screen size, connectivity, remain largely the same. Hence MINOR VARIANT. I'm not convinced there's any reason for an iPhone 5 user to get one of these, and by that logic, 4 and 4s customers needing LTE, outside of certain select markets (which probably don't have the iPhone currently) there is no reason to upgrade past 5/5c.

A Forced "shortage" at launch smells SO FISHY coming from "Mr SupplyChain"

It is not forced, and you can't solve all supply problems by throwing money or management at it. It has to do with global production capacity of smartphones (which is constrained as is widely known) and difficulty in forecasting (look at how many manufacturers have difficulties in selling their stock).

3AM will put you at the end of the line. I got there at 11PM the previous evening and I was 10th in line... and this was no major city...

I believe he was talking about being online at 3AM EST to order it from Apple.com. :D

Forced shortage? Lmao..... WHere the hell do people get this crap from? EVERY company wants to sell as many phones as customers want to buy. Every customer who walks away without a contract and a iPhone, or a unlocked iPhone is money lost. Apple knows that. You think HYPE and Long LINES pays the bills? NO... and neither does all the media attention in the world. Unless you have a phone to put in there hands for cash. What people cant handle is that sometimes you cant make enough goodness for everyone. No matter what product that is. And the iPhone 5c a flop? Lol... I love how nowadays a phone that sells like 5 million the first week(My Guess) is a flop. Please... Chics and tweens(Not saying no Men will like it) are gonna eat that stuff up. Watch...

Nice marketing technique to sell more phones. Make people feel that they need to buy it now or else they won't be able to get one. I think the supplies will be fine. If not, meh, I'll wait a week or w/e. First world problems, yo.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You're less than 18 years old, right?

My iPhone 4 ... yes the FOUR, still runs perfectly. I'll stick to this model until it doesn't run anymore or I choose to switch to T-Mobile and can't take the lower speeds.

And you can? Where are the 64bit android phones? Where are the android phone with a motion co-processor?

Even if android put out 64-bit phones it will still be 2 to 3 years before They would have a operating system to support 64-bit. By that time Samsung would have dumped androids operating system for Intel's. And Googles Phones will be on a chrome OS.

NFC Is currently useless, Notice the HTC one mini Does not have an NFC(This may become a trend)

They did it on purpose to create demand for the Holiday season.

Demand = people talking = buzz = stock price surge = pass me the rolaids

Samsung would use Tinzen probably.

"Hey Jim, did you unload the other 8 boxes of iPhones we got in for Friday?"

"Oh.... there were more boxes?"

"Yeah, go unload them"

.....

"Oh nevermind about that shortage... call off the internet"

You are partly right:

5S = no pre-launch due to inventory constraints;

5C = no sales figures because it's a flop.

Always sunshine and rainbows with you regarding Apple, eh?

Your conclusions are based on what exactly?

Well, I was gonna downvote you; but this option is no longer available.

Ironic you think it's a good thing for me that there is no longer any downvoting. Very ironic indeed, but I suppose with the huge number of trolls taking over this site, perhaps you're right and I'm wrong.
