So you're thinking the 5S will get replaced under warranty?

1) Get 5S replaced / fixed under warranty

2) Trade it in for a 6

they can put a new battery in your 4 too.

No they can't. Apple replaced the battery in an iPhone 4 I had as a courtesy as I switched back to it while waiting for a mall in replacement iPhone 5. After filling out the paperwork, the genus went back and grabbed a replacement phone. I asked why they weren't just swapping the battery and he said they couldn't do iPhone 4 battery replacements in store. Fine by me. That phone currently sits in its box in cryogenic freeze since its no longer my back up phone. (A 4s is now).

This only ever happens in limited circumstances, where there is a supply limitation on replacement phones.

This. Apple upgraded my 12" Powerbook to a 15" MacBook Pro several years ago. They no longer stocked the part needed to repair it because it was so old and was still covered under AppleCare.

I wouldn't count on that happening with phone just barely a year old.

But - they own the phone. Whether they want it back or not, they own it until it's paid off.

I would like to correct you on this a bit.

You may be right for the ATT Next or Verizon edge.

You are definitely incorrect if you think this is also true for standard 2 year upgrades.

When doing an upgrade with a 2 year contract, you are not in any way signing a contract for the device. You can do WHATEVER you please with the device- hell, you never even have to activate it on your line if you choose not to! The contract you are signing simply says that you will keep service with your carrier for 2 years. That's all!

I'm not expecting this thread to yield any real results... Just curious if the Genius Bar ever let anyone upgrade rather than taking a replacement. I know this happens if they run out of the model you had. My mic sporadically works so I'm not sure if it's a software issue as some had. But maybe they'll let me upgrade to a 6 Plus if I pay a little ;). Doubt it lol.

I simply wanted to change color before, and they wouldn't let me.
