64 Bit Got anything?

Whether 5C is generating similar traffic as compared to 5S? Though 64 Bit architecture as such need not generate lots of traffic, but iOS7 64 Bit needs to be analysed.

5S has the same amount of memory as the 5, so any page refreshing would be equal on both devices.

Safari tabs refreshed like crazy on my 3rd gen iPad running iOS 6. I see no difference in that between iOS 6/prior and iOS 7.

As a day 1 iPhone 5 user, my data consumption has doubled over the last year with no usage changes. Background app updates and updates becoming larger (40-50mb vs. 5-15mb) than in the iPhone 4 days definitely contributes.
Not to mention social media adoption. Heck, composing a new tweet now defaults to your camera roll.

Nobody else is going to take this one? Okay, I'll bite. WTF is the HTC Sensation, and how does it eat so much data?

It's clearly sensational at using lots and lots of data. :p

First true smartphone was an HTC Desire, which I later upgraded for an iPhone via eBay. Used that lots, lots more so naturally ate up more data.

It noted that the top 1 percent of cellular users consume more than half of all downloaded data, with the top 10 percent of users consuming 90 percent of downloaded data. The company notes that this is broadly consistent with trends from the past two years. In addition, LTE data users, unsurprisingly, consume more data than users on slower data networks.

What I think is interesting is the fact that iOS devices are DOWNLOADING data, and Android phones are UPLOADING data.

I wonder what Google is doing with all that data....

I definitely notice more data usage since getting a 5S. I used to hover around the 300mb mark... I'm now going well over 500mb each month with the same usage patterns. Not sure if it's the 5S or because I switched to T-Mobile though...

Yeah I do wonder if there is some sort of data leak and the phone is pulling more than it needs to.

Are we to surmise that "Downlink" refers to downloading and "Uplink" refers to uploading? Or is it something else?

I am actually certified brain-dead and was dumbed down from birth so it really is necessary to explain when new words are formulated and publicised as without a clear explanation I haven't got a clue.

Thanks.

Just confirms what I have been feeling for a while. iOS seems to use more data for no reason a lot of the time.

I don't know how you reached that conclusion, there could be a million reasons.

How about the fact that over the past 5 years, a significant number of apps increased their scope? I take for example ebay app, the original app barely allowed you to bid, now you can sell, bid, bargain, send emails, and do 90% of what you do on ebay.com. Before I used to use my laptop more often.

How about Pandora, Spotify, iTunes radio?

Or how about the idea that people love, just love their iPhone and use it more often?

And show me a legit digital movie stores that sell it in BD quality? 40GiB per movie downloads?

There's only one place to get that.. Torrent
You know what torrent means?

iTunes :) I buy Game of Thrones every season in 1080p quality. It's cheaper than blu-rays. Blu-rays are compressed 1080p usually. The quality is great, but not that noticeably different from an HD iTunes movie that you can rent for $4. I also have Netflix, which is less than $20 to get a blu-ray mailed to you every other day along with 1080p streaming if you have roku/appletv/ps4/xbox. You'll find after a year or two, you will have seen most of everything you would have wanted to see.

I blame it on Touch ID. It's WAY too easy to buy stuff on iTunes and App Store now. :)

something fishy

So, honestly I think there is something fishy here. Could be 5/5s dependent or could be ios 7.

but, I went from a 4s to a 5s, and my usage went up from ca 200-400MB a month to easily 500-1000MB a month, sometimes more..

My usage patterns haven't really changed. Settings are the same, I have the same things turned off and the same things turned out. Phone isn't supposed to send many or any updates, and yet I'll see usage like 100MB a DAY sometimes, which makes no sense.

My 4s was on a 5.0xx build (by design) and the 5s is of course on ios 7.04 now.

So, there must be something in the ios differences and not just user usage patterns based on phone speed or network speed

This is easily explained.
iPhone 5S is exclusively iOS7, which updates itself whenever automatically, whether you are on WiFi or not.
iPhone 5 still has users on iOS6, which requires you to update your apps manually. Most users would rather use WiFi to do this.

And all telcos worldwide are reducing their data quotas and increasing their price plans. It's madness.

I'm with you on that, brother. Though I am not a fan of ATT, I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan that I won't give up. They've only throttled me once even though I've had a jailbroken phone for 3 years. If you try and tether your phone to your laptop, well, without an unlimited data plan and a JB iphone running MyWi, you pay a ton of money.
And theses same companies screw you at home as well. ATT or Verizon offer you 8-24 mbs speeds for a lot of money per month. Fortunately for me, at my apartment I use WEBPASS which provides over 100 mbp speeds for about $40 a month of you pay a year in advnce. If you live in a recently built highrise in parts of California, Webpass is the ONLY way to go. (WWW.WEBPASS.NET).
And to take it a step further, the ISPs paid big bucks to help vote out the mayor of Seattle so he couldn't implement his plan for local, inexpensive, very high speed internet connectivity.
It's a monopoly, plain and simple.

From my own anecdotal data, I had an iPhone 4 (on iOS 7) and used around 60-70 MB a month. After updating to a 5c, I consistently use almost my entire allotment each month (200MB). That seems like a large increase. As far as I can tell, my usage habits haven't changed. I don't understand how this is possible...

Faster you can use data the more you use

it depends on the usage. ex: for web, yes. ex: for podcasts, no, the air time of the show never changes. so for some usages you will merely download faster but your workflow in the app will stay the same.

The Bandwidth 1%: The newest hated group, consuming all of our GB's when the other 99% are paying for it.

Do you know what torrent means? Torrents aren't automatically illegal, it's just a popular way of sharing illegally. There are plenty of legal files being torrented.

This is such a pet peeve of mine. BitTorrent is an amazing and potentially transformational technology. It has been associated with illegal activity for so long though, I see little hope for it. Such a shame...

I often turn to torrents when Indie games are free, but the creators site is taking a hammering. I agree with you, it's too associated with illegal content. :(

Well, I can say that I am certainly using far more data now with my 5s than I was with my 5. This is because my 5 was on the crappy non LTE network of Sprint. I got tired of their promises of LTE coming to Denver anytime now... Been hearing that for 18 months now! Switched to T-Mobile thanks to their ETF buyout! Now I am actually able to do stuff on my iPhone! In two weeks I've used almost 2 1/5 times data as I used in a month on Sprint because I can actually stream video and music at the gym now and at work.

The Gold one is giving all others that extra boost of magic :p

interesting people download more than previous versions .. Maybe everyone just switched to a higher plan ?
