The 5c is a nice phone and at $399 would have KILLED.

That's lower than how much the iPhone 4S costs off contract. No way Apple sells the 5c that cheap. They are all about maximizing margin with the iPhones.

Also my guess is $399 is a terrible price point for Apple. That's still too expensive for off contract buyers and too cheap for carrier subsidy.

It is a cool phone, but I think we all agree that the price of the 5C is simply too high.
It makes absolutely no sense saving that little compared to the superior 5S.

5c is just a bad deal with the current price.

Still, Apple probably has better margins on the 5c than 5s, so two-to-one may be pretty good numbers for them after all.

The price does signify a brain fart though I think the 5C would be doing a bit better if they included adult colors in the lineup (black, gray, etc) or even metallic colors like a dark metallic copper.

This is what happens when you take an old phone, give it a pretty new color and try to sell it as new.

They sell a lot and make a lot of money?

They got iPhone5C pricing wrong. Should have been priced £250-£300

Why stop there? Why not make it free? They would completely dominate the market!

 Evidently a lot of people disagree with you.

A lot of contracts are signed for two years. You can see this movement in the numbers. A lot of people jumped on the 3, 4, 5 train and are waiting for the iphone6 instead of the 5s.

Not that hard to understatement right? So why dont people write about that?

Two year contracts is not the norm in many parts of the world.

Shame that Apple were the only people in the world who didn't see this coming and they massively underproduced the 5s so that 6 week waits are quite common.

Add in the faulty sensors, no preorder and loud clicky home button and this is probably one of Apple's worst product launches.

I'm not surprised AT ALL.
it will eventually reach 3-1 even 5-1.
5s is vastly superior to 5c in terms of design and feel of quality.while 5c cost only a little less.
I personally wouldn't buy a 5c at all even if it was half this price and even if it was the only available iphone.frankly I would consider non apple phones if 5c was the only iPhone.that's how much I hate that design.

It will eventually possibly even surpass the 5S. Are none of you reading this article correctly?

Evidently twice as many people agree with his assessment. The 5s is a far superior value compared to the 5c. For 20% more, you get a faster more feature rice phone. Try getting folks interested in a $35,000 Mercedes C class if they can get an E class for $42,000.

Exactly! Or are you one of those people that think Apple would prefer you buy one of their cheaper models?

because there are a lot of people that are on the S schedule as well?

Good! Will be plenty of the 5C in stock for me when I pick one up.

I'd have bought a 5S but unless Apple fix the ridiculous motion sensor issue then I'll be going with the 5C.

20% more? http://store.apple.com/us

$99 vs. $199 subsidized. That's 100% more. I wouldn't argue with the better value but for some people, even $99 is too much for a phone. Many stores in the US are selling the 5C for $49 now...so 300% more for the 5S....

To be clear, just because the 5S is outselling the 5C 2:1 doesn't mean that the 5C isn't selling. In fact, I have been surprised how many 5Cs I have seen in the wild the past few weeks.

I would estimate that of the units I've seen, roughly 85% are females aged 20-35. Blue and Pink appear to be the two most common colors among this group (most with no case). The fashion play is definitely working for this segment of the market.

Sure, if by massively under produced you mean still produced more than ever before...it amazes me that these things get past anyone.

It's also selling better now than it was at launch...and that number will likely rise since 5C buyers are not the type to buy at launch and 5S buyers are. Over time, there may be a point where the 5C becomes more popular than the 5S.

Actually that sounds pretty good to me, considering that most Apple Users are used to buying the flagship model by default.

I see the 5C as replacement for the 5, and for that the price is pretty much right on. The expectations of Apple releasing a cheap phone were pushed immensely by the media, tech sites, rumor sites(...) and that image is what the 5C seems to have to many, despite the very high quality of the materials (a majority of the reviews did mention the excellent feel). Had Apple just continued the 5 to a slightly reduced price, people might have not been raising their eyebrows as much...

This is the funniest post I've read in a while. "Borderline fraud"?! I don't think so. Fraud would be for Apple to say, "The iPhone 5c is just like the iPhone 5s -- just with more color options!"

The iPhone 5c is a new product line for Apple so there's nothing wrong with them calling it a new product. For most consumers who couldn't care less about the internal specs of a smartphone, the iPhone 5c *is* a new iPhone because they've never seen an iPhone in those colors before. For the average consumer, their assessment of whether or not a phone is "new" doesn't go beyond the external casing of the device.

Remember, the vast majority of iPhone owners or prospective owners have never heard of macrumors.com nor do they know or care what an A6 or A7 processor are.

So it's ok for Apple to take advantage of less knowledgeable consumers??

The way Apple is marketing the 5C, it appears to be this year's new model. In fact, it is last years model with a plastic body.

Shady.

Exactly...I'm not sure what people think Apple were thinking but I'm pretty sure this is exactly it. They want to sell a cheaper phone that's also not being made with the exact same parts as the phone they need to produce more of. It's actually a perfect strategy...

:apple:

How are they being taken advantage of? They aren't paying the same price as the newer tech, they're paying the same price they'd pay for last year's model and even less. At what point do you think the customer can't tell the more expensive phone is the better one?

If Apple launched an all new plastic MacBook with Retina and called it the MacBookC but it had the mid-2012 MBPr internals and sold around the same price as a refurbished MBPr would it also be shady? Their competition does this stuff all of the time and it's never been a problem.

I just wish the colors were better.

It seems my choices are:
- Dirt-magnet white
- Lisa Frank pink / blue / green
- Pee yellow (or, early kidney failure yellow)

Oh, and I can put a Crocks shoe on it. :-/

I like the idea of a taking last-years phone and re-imagining it as a new mid-tier devie, but I don't like their execution.

I agree there, I'd never want any of these colors...Black would have been fine. Also, I'd have to go third party on the case.

I got to this part now, too:

I definitely thought this one would trail way behind popular phones like Samsung Galaxy S4.

This bears no signs of a failure to me.

For the month. Apple always sells a disproportionate amount of phones during launch month. The competitors phones in comparison are nearing the end of their product cycle and will be replaced in a few months from now.
