iPhone 5 - A Connoisseurs Device
iPhone 5 - A Connoisseurs Device
I've read with great interest the posts made on this forum. It's fantastic to see the expressed opinions in light of the reported reduction in component orders for Apples iPhone 5.
I don't really have a huge take on this specific issue other than the following. The iPhone 5 may seem tired to some but you can never get away from the fact that it is a device that is made with great care attention to detail with some of the best materials to achieve a beautiful design. While it may be light in comparison to previous generations it truly is a simple and gorgeous design.
Many have said that they would like to see a larger screen however what we lose sight of is that this, it is a phone that does a lot of smart things therefore important that it is of a size that can fit comfortably in the hand when making or taking calls. It is a phone and not a tablet. It is a convergence device that takes the best aspects of a computer and package them in the most reasonable form factor.
I have had the opportunity to use the Samsung devices and yes they are nice but I would not regard them as being of the same quality of any of the iPhones released. While the OS is looking considerably better than the first iterations the fact remains that in terms of setting these wonderful devices up for the first time it is truly a tedious task. Sure the response will be that one requires some familiarity with the OS to navigate their way around yet setting up an iPhone is considerably easier (of course my opinion). That ease of use is echoed through my 7 year old who regularly accesses her emails, iMessages and the many apps that have taken up the much required storage on my iPhone and now my iPad! Isn't it also important that ease of use be a key feature of any device to prevent us from device/OS snobbery? I certainly did not require any tuition or
Somehow I don't believe it is the OS that is the issue but possibly more about our expectations. We have a lust for the new and the exciting yet what we seem to forget is the effort that has made the iPhone an easy to use device. The industrial design and the materials used. Once you pick up an iPhone 5 you marvel at how light it is. Then make the comparison to the nearest competitors and soon you experience what is the reality of these other devices. While again they are also beautiful they feel cheap and over sized and while the specs are often impressive it leaves a feeling of there being something missing. What is in your hand and how that feels is often the thing that weighs in ones mind not just looks and the specs alone.
So while we will no doubt look over the shoulder of someone with their new cell phone, and we will if we're truly into our tech, but the iPhone is the genuine article, the one that set the standard the one that paved the way.
The iPhone 5 is in my opinion a connoisseurs device. It does not need the bells or the whistles or the over the top ad campaigns (simple ads do the trick). All it requires is a stable and simple to use OS coupled with a great maps app (and I'm certain that it won't be too long before this is remedied). Reduction in components, sounds like a 5S or a true 6 is enroute all with a shiny new iOS 7.
