I really hope that Apple doesn't change the screen size ever again, or at least until evolution makes humans physically bigger then it would be ok I guess!

I'm not arguing the platform. I'm a NeXT/Apple Engineer alum. I'm arguing the Industrial Design post Steve.

With respect to the iPhone 5 being the biggest seller, that has more to do with expanded markets than its being a superior product to its previous brethren, specifically the 4 series.

Each release of the iPhone has been the most successful smartphone product model in this short history of smartphones.

I expect the iPhone next version to eclipse the 5 but hopefully not just because an additional 1 billion new potential customers in the Far East make it so and more to do with it eating sales from Samsung and other Android vendors.

How is the iPhone 5 not a superior product, or a superior industrial design over the iPhone 4/4S?

For the record, some of the Industrial Designs that came under Steve, especially the early days of his return, were interesting, short lived, and dead ends. The iPhone 5 is merely an evolutionary extension of the iPhone 4/4S, better in almost all ways in my opinion, and equally a minimalist design.

It may seem like a small upgrade every time but in the space of about 5 years look at the difference between the first iPhone and the iPhone 5, it's huge. To me people only seem to have a year long memory.

Apple is turning into RIMM!

Unfortunately....

Samsung is turning into Nokia...(Good time of Nokia where they dominated the bottom market in developing nations).

I am not saying Apple should target that market or not but Apple needs to innovate and make a splash. I don't remember when was the last time I thought Apple did something great that wowed everyone!!

I think time has come for apple to transition to a new product line (iPod to iPhone to iPad -> x)

Think hard, there must be something you remember. You remember loving it, but can't remember what 'it' was?

We need something new and fresh, I agree. I love my retina -- as far as computers go it's fine. But the phone needs to change. Maybe iOS 7 only working on 5 and up? Something new. I just don't see this need for a cheaper phone -- that would be very silly. Apple isn't walmart.

5s!!

Makes no sense to make an iphone 5S when the 5 was obviously not that successful! Let me guess.. better camera, faster, longer battery life? lol. Apple really seems to be falling behind the competition. If there are no REAL improvements or innovation I might start looking at samsung or elsewhere.

Realistically we can't expect much from the iPhone 5S right?

More colors
Faster chip
Camera update
another iOS 6

Apple has to listen to what the public wants, not tell them what they need.
Apple could probably get a lot more market share if they did what the public told them to. But at what cost?

Apple has stated they want to make the best products, not the most products.

Making a 5" iPhone, shoving lots of features and aesthetic changes into iOS, or flooding the market with lots of iPhones for every price point could probably give them loads of market share, but they'd lose some of their key advantages - consistency, simplicity, profit margins (it would cost more to produce may models of iPhone), ease of app development, etc.

If Apple doesn't know about the requests, etc. of people like you, then I have a bridge to sell you. But remember, these forums represent the minority of people who enjoy talking about this kind of stuff. Most people just want a phone that works, and for many of these kinds of people, iPhone has, does, and will most likely continue to deliver.

tl;dr: APPLE IS KING ASDFASDFASDFASDFASDF

If there's no innovation this stock will continue to nose dive.

I love my Apple products but I'm hatting AAPL as a stock right now :(

You'll get the normal incremental update. An A6x CPU, slightly more RAM if lucky. And perhaps NFC now.

I couldn't care less about the stock. It's all based on absurd speculation by stupid and greedy people.

iPhone 5 - A Connoisseurs Device

iPhone 5 - A Connoisseurs Device

I've read with great interest the posts made on this forum. It's fantastic to see the expressed opinions in light of the reported reduction in component orders for Apples iPhone 5.

I don't really have a huge take on this specific issue other than the following. The iPhone 5 may seem tired to some but you can never get away from the fact that it is a device that is made with great care attention to detail with some of the best materials to achieve a beautiful design. While it may be light in comparison to previous generations it truly is a simple and gorgeous design.

Many have said that they would like to see a larger screen however what we lose sight of is that this, it is a phone that does a lot of smart things therefore important that it is of a size that can fit comfortably in the hand when making or taking calls. It is a phone and not a tablet. It is a convergence device that takes the best aspects of a computer and package them in the most reasonable form factor.

I have had the opportunity to use the Samsung devices and yes they are nice but I would not regard them as being of the same quality of any of the iPhones released. While the OS is looking considerably better than the first iterations the fact remains that in terms of setting these wonderful devices up for the first time it is truly a tedious task. Sure the response will be that one requires some familiarity with the OS to navigate their way around yet setting up an iPhone is considerably easier (of course my opinion). That ease of use is echoed through my 7 year old who regularly accesses her emails, iMessages and the many apps that have taken up the much required storage on my iPhone and now my iPad! Isn't it also important that ease of use be a key feature of any device to prevent us from device/OS snobbery? I certainly did not require any tuition or

Somehow I don't believe it is the OS that is the issue but possibly more about our expectations. We have a lust for the new and the exciting yet what we seem to forget is the effort that has made the iPhone an easy to use device. The industrial design and the materials used. Once you pick up an iPhone 5 you marvel at how light it is. Then make the comparison to the nearest competitors and soon you experience what is the reality of these other devices. While again they are also beautiful they feel cheap and over sized and while the specs are often impressive it leaves a feeling of there being something missing. What is in your hand and how that feels is often the thing that weighs in ones mind not just looks and the specs alone.

So while we will no doubt look over the shoulder of someone with their new cell phone, and we will if we're truly into our tech, but the iPhone is the genuine article, the one that set the standard the one that paved the way.

The iPhone 5 is in my opinion a connoisseurs device. It does not need the bells or the whistles or the over the top ad campaigns (simple ads do the trick). All it requires is a stable and simple to use OS coupled with a great maps app (and I'm certain that it won't be too long before this is remedied). Reduction in components, sounds like a 5S or a true 6 is enroute all with a shiny new iOS 7.

For those of us that really like Apple this is good news.

It's very important for Apple to try & keep up now that Samsung has made so many significant contributions to the smartphone space. Larger displays, higher resolutions coming up in Q2, sizes and choices Apple has refused to bring to market, have all added up to Samsung & Android supremacy.

As much as I enjoy my iPhone 5, it's rather obvious from talking to my friends that finally gave up on their iPhone loyalty & bought Samsungs, that they were really happy they did. When they show me how much more their Androids can do it is rather frustrating that Apple fell so far behind.

Now.. if Apple does what they are fully capable of this could be a milestone for them.

Apple will start killing their own sales with all this speculation and if it is true that they are coming out with a new one in June, their 5 sales will start to slow, then if they do not release the new one, like what I saw with the 5 people start to buy other models, and with Samsung getting better, I see a lot of people getting those instead.

I would prefer to wait until there are major changes to get the newer model...

What happened to semi-annual release cycles?

iPhone 6 in November? iPad 5 March and iPad 6 before Christmas?
