I still don't understand. Put it in dummy terms for me:)

In the 1970's there was a great coverup by President Richard Nixon surrounding a hotel called the Watergate. The scandal became known as 'The Watergate Scandal'. Now, it's became a trend to refer to other great scandals with '-gate' on the end.

----------

I went to a store today and did a scratch test on all 3 colours.

Space grey show some wear on the edges, followed by gold and least showing on silver.

As long as they use aluminium, it will scuff.

Wait, you went into a store and scratched-up their display devices? Nice job douche.

4 people including myself have got space grey 5S's, no scuffgate on any of the devices. Seems better quality anodised aluminium

I only tried the chamfered edges since thats where it wears away first. I'm surprised how much wear it had already being on display for a few days.

You mean wear from people like you that come in and deliberately try to mess it up? Shocking!

Glad to hear from someone who is answering the subject of this thread.

It appears that things might have improved, as we were seeing reports of damaged phones out of the box with the 5 series.

I guess the real test will be in 2–3 months time once people have had a chance to make use of their phones in a normal manner.

It was scuffgate for the 5. It's expected on the 5S, so doesn't get a "gate".

Problem with this video is they are using purported "prototypes" of the "graphite" and gold. If you look closely at the gold, the Apple logo is silver whereas the real thing is actually also gold.

Not that it makes a lick of difference when you're abusing the phones in such a manner. Just making it clear that this isn't a true indication of the real thing that's out there now.

Furthermore, I've read two reports specifically here on MR. One being their Gold came with three tiny dot-like nicks on the back face of their phone. This was out of the box. The other was a space grey user who accidentally dropped his/her (already) and that the marks were nowhere near as noticeable as the black 5 from last year.

For those that don't know Steve Jobs coined the term antenna-gate to underplay the antenna issues with the iPhone 4. Every problem since then has been a X-gate by customers.

So if you don't like the term blame Jobs.

They're still coming with factory damage.

I got my slate grey 5S delivered on Friday. Checked it over with the plastic still on in a low light environment and it looked perfect. Took off the plastic and set it up, then went to bed. Literally took it out of the box, plugged in the lightning connector, and put it on the table; that's it. Noticed in the morning under better lighting when I was putting it in my pocket that there was a small chip on the bottom beveled edge about midway between the silent button and the plastic antenna break. Glints in the light and catches my fingernail when I run it across. Really bummed. :(

My 4 and 3gs before it still look absolutely perfect cosmetically. I bet when I am done with this one the only damage will be the one chip it came with.

But the 5S is otherwise perfect and it's a huge upgrade from my 4 so I am reluctant to return it at this time. I'll see if I forget about it in a week or if any other scratches/chips build up.

Maybe I can find a Sharpie or something to match the color and make it a little less obvious.

I got my space grey last night and it has a 2mm hairline scratch on the back straight from opening that is barely noticeable. Don't really mind as I am getting the red leather case today.

Went to the Apple store for the first time since launch.

Whilst the 5S doesn't seem as high quality in terms of resilience as the 4S and before, the ones I observed were in reasonable shape.

I saw at least 2 models of each of the colours.

The Space Gray seemed to fare the worst given the dark colour. It's nowhere near as bad as the Slate 5, but there were noticeable marks around the lightning port.

The Silver was actually probably the most marked but you could only really see the damage when held at unnatural angles to reflect the light. Both silver phones had little nicks & scratches right around the antenna.

The Gold came out best with hardly a mark on either unit.

Surprisingly being a black iPhone man since I first bought the 3G (and upgraded since) I quite liked the Gold. It's not like the rose colour of some of the pictures and is reminiscent of the Gold electronics of the 80's and early 90's.

Less "Bling" more "Retro Cool".

If only it were available able with a black frontage.

Overall with regard to the scuffing though. From my limited observations of phones that are in the harsh environment of demonstration models, there's a definite improvement from the 5.

It's still not reaching the levels of quality of the 4S and prior, however.

The balance remains in favour of Apple profits . . .

Perfect!? Your gyroscope don't work I'd say, gyro-gate

He didn't really coin it. He was responding to forums like this from people that were already using the term "antenna-gate"

I would agree, last year I bought a white/silver 5 and within a week I had a few small marks showing on the edges, I decided it was too soft for me and sold it. In January I was offered a good deal on a 5 as an upgrade so got another white/silver 5 as I thought they might have sorted the soft finish out, within 2 weeks it had starting picking up marks and blemishes so I sold it as well and went back to my 4s.

My grey 5s has been carried in my pocket since the 20th, it's even fallen from the windscreen mount when the holder decided to part company with the sucker holding it on the glass.

I have yet to find a mark or blemish on the 5s, the anodising seems to be far more hard wearing and durable than it was on the 5.

It's been almost two weeks of a naked phone and still no scuffs yet. I've been pretty careful though

I didn't think so. First time I heard it was from Jobs and I was an avid forum member. Plus it doesn't make sense, think about it. X-gate is obviously a way to sarcastically overplay something small. Why would people on forums want to sarcastically underplay legitimate problems with their device? Also "gate" is ONLY used with Apple products. What forum member has that much clout to coin that term specifically to one brand while no one else on the planet uses it for anything else?

Orly?...

Squaretrade said it is less durable than the iPhone 5.

I dont understand how the 5S can score any different than the 5 --- Exact same externally only things changed were battery size and main board -- I don't think their review makes any sense or maybe their rating system changed since iPhone 5 (I'm sure they didn't test the iPhone 5 again).

I doubt increasing the battery size and narrowing the main board would cause the phone to slide more or get damaged more in a drop....and according to gsmarena.com the weight of the iPhone 5S and 5 is the exact same as well.....

Squaretrade is making money by making that false claim
