You got that right.
Now half the people in this conversation are grabbing their tents out of the garage and beginning a night of camping.
I always preferred camping that wasn't at the local mall. A couple of hours of my time and a good night's sleep are worth more to me than a phone.

I missed the big run-up in Apple stock, maybe I can still get stock in a tent company. This phenomenon doesn't look like it will end anytime soon.

People look at me funny when I put my SLR in my pants pocket.

That said: I've almost always got my iPhone with me and not so true with my SLR...

Gary

That's interesting, because I rarely have my iPhone with me and prefer to just have my DSLR.
But hey, mums and dads can take pic's of the kids and the images look good.

I've been queuing in Bluewater since 2am, maybe 150 people in front of me. They ran out of Gold ones pretty instantly and out of S model half way before getting to me. They must have had 50-100 S phones in total, pretty lame for an iPhone release event at an official Apple Store.

Ah sympathies mate, that sucks. :(

Must admit to feeling some small amount of validation at having decided to buy online last night. I don't mind waiting all that much, but I was hoping to have a party time at the queue.

That is true mostly for non-manufactured items. It isn't as applicable to manufactured items as you drive your customers elsewhere. Apple wants to sell as many of these as possible.
I've seen people fight over lots of "manufactured products" for deals they could have easily gotten a day or two later, had they stopped to be rational.

Let's face it, Apple zealots aren't going anywhere. These events foster excitement for those people, even though in another year they'll be cursing their "Old" iPhone 5s or c, and waiting in line again or complaining about breaking their contracts.

Now showing Just "October" for dispatch date on all models in the UK online store. Some of the operators seem to still have stocks of Space Grey but O2 is quoting 3-6 weeks on silver and gold models.

Stocks seem to be seriously restricted this year and I suspect the share price will take some hammering unless Apple can release a statement that softens the apparent stock shortage.

It's still 1-3 day shipping in the US more than 2 hours into online sales except for the gold one and the 64GB AT&T version. My guess is that they just allocated a lot more stock to the US than other countries because the US is by far their biggest market. If they are going to hit their numbers this weekend, it will be because of good sales in the US, and not France, the UK, or even China, quite frankly. The carriers here subsidize the phone like crazy, and that drives unit sales. Sure we pay more per month, but that's how it goes.

Judging by the update, that has slipped to "October" in the US now as well. As you say, more stock obviously sent to the US but compared to previous years even the US didn't have delivery dates slip so far and so quickly did it?

EDIT : Gold showing "October" in US what are other versions showing?

To be fair, it's only the gold that's "October." Right now you can still get an AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint phone in Space Gray or White and get it shipped in 1-3 business days. The T-Mobile version quickly slipped to 7-10 business days, but probably because they got the smallest allocation.

The annoying thing was here that O2 and other retailers seemed to have more stock online than Apple themselves. Still showing some phones in stock for delivery next week.

I'm not going to whinge too much as it was my choice to order online from Apple, but do find it strange how the UK stock has been allocated.

Yep. A friend ordered from Three last night and will get it delivered within 3 days, I ordered from Apple and have to wait 3 weeks. I wish carriers allowed you to buy the phone from them even if you're only going sim only.

Got the 64GB Black 5S in hand. Got to verizon 90 minutes before opening. They were not given any gold versions at all and were limited on colors for the 5C.

You can say the same thing about Android zealots. What you describe isn't unique to Apple.

You're up at 4:32am on the forums on launch day but yet you rarely have your iPhone with you? I don't understand the point of having it then. Not the normal demographic, I think...

I agree that I'd prefer to have my DSLR with me and I take it many many places. But the many many places that I don't take it, I almost always have my iPhone with me.

Why do I always have it? It's a camera, eBook reader (not my preferred choice, but if it's all I have on me), has internet access and it's actually able to make phone calls too (I rarely do that).

Gary

My experience of getting the new handset each launch day, is that the carriers are the way to go. No Apple store in my city yet and its normally a working day, so I either get it delivered if there are pre-orders or walk into a store.

I've never not got a handset on launch day and today was the same. Voda store busy but they had stock.

Good luck to those still waiting/searching.

There are Android Zealots? I'm not standing in that line either. I always thought Apple had a more devout following, maybe they're just more vocal.

There is a comfortable place to get a decent Cappuccino and watch the Apple Store Crowds in Newport Beach, it's a mild diversion.

Honestly, I wouldn't get your hopes up. Best Buy is notoriously bad with information.

Walked in today and got my 5S with no issues. They had lots of them (over 50 probably) - all at&t space gray models. They didn't get very many Verizon or sprint versions though. I was pleasantly surprised as well... Best buy has never been my first choice for electronics.

Fair enough, good answer.
Regarding the time thing (I'm in Australia, so that be the reason for the 4:32am )

The Android zealots stand in line for Samsung phones but more obnoxiously they hang around Apple forums and post nothing but negative dribble. Apparently they have nothing better to to than to make themselves feel better by trying to drag others down.

Sounds like they're the lowest of the low, but I've never seen an Android line anywhere, or known Apple users to have any problems dragging each other down.

In any case, I've never seen the point in arguing over a phone, I didn't get the memo that they had become objects of worship.

Really BAD queuing system!

Just to add my Apple queuing experience. The thing to stand out, is how BADLY it is organised; each and every year the same thing!!

- I was outside the Brighton store in the UK from around 4:30am, and was ~50th in line.
(we have to stand outside the shopping centre until it opens at 7am, and then get walked-in in the same order by the Apple staff to queue directly outside the Apple Store itself).

- The Apple staff actually appeared outside the shopping centre at 5am, and we all asked "what is stock like?"... their answer: "we can't tell you!". (also said you can buy upto two 5S's, as per every year, &/or TEN 5C's -- this should have been an advanced warning for everyone in line!!)

- So we are all standing there (no free coffee/food BTW, as I hear the US stores get!) until 7am (yes, TWO hours waiting), and by now there are ~250 people in line, before being lead inside the shopping centre by the staff in groups of 10, until most of the queue is now lined-up inside the centre directly outside the store.

- Now we're directly lined-up outside the Apple store in the centre, at 7:30am they FINALLY start going down they queue asking what people want and handing out the stock tickets! It soon became apparent they had absolutely f*c*-all 5S units in stock!

Out of the first 30 people, I soon saw ~10 leave instantly they spoke to the manager who was making his way down the line handing-out the stock tickets as he spoke REALLY QUIETLY in hushed tones to each person individually inline, many people were rolling their eyes in surprise so I wondered what was going on. Then out of the next 20 just in front of me, another 5 left (one shouting "WTF, NO GOLDS AT ALL LEFT AFTER LESS THAN 30 PEOPLE!" As they stormed off).
I wanted to hear it from the horses mouth, and a couple of mins later eventually the Apple manager got to me at ~50th in line and confirmed all golds had gone before me, as had all the white/silvers too, in fact all they had left was 16 & 32GB Black/Grey's!

I thought about quizzing him about it, but he looked highly annoyed he was having to advise customers, and was apologising profusely about it, so as I wanting a gold 64GB (or at least a white one!) I just left the queue too without wasting time asking him anything more.

However, out of interest I hung around for another 30mins (drinking a nearby self-bought coffee to perk-up a bit) and it was just plainly embarrassing difficult for the Apple staff, as they advised queuers of ZERO 5S's left (after the few people behind me snapped-up the remaining black ones I passed on).

I literally watched as ~90% of the rest of the queue vanished as one-by-one each small group was advised no 5S's left, only 5C's, before I then left.
_________

On watching them all gradually being told 'no stock left', the more forceful queuers were asking the manager TWO questions which were really pissing everyone off:

1.) Why did they not tell people at 5am that they had low stocks?!

2.) Given low stock, why did they not go down the line at 5am to hand-out the stock tickets to the first people in line, so others behind them did not have to waste their time and could have left a lot earlier?!

Another work colleague I spoke to was queuing outside the VERY LARGE London Covent Garden store (at ~300 in line) and he didn't even get ANY to chose from, nor did the previous 50 people in front of him!
Being big, there was ~1200 people still behind him! They were also queuing for much much longer too, and they were mostly VERY PISSED-OFF at being kept in line by Apple staff from 5am (when the staff appeared) until 8am (yes, they had to wait until 8am before the doors opened there!). Only for most of them to leave with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, given nearly all wanted a 5S!

I also have a friend who works at another London branch of Apple Store, but wasn't working that day. It transpires that Apple HQ clearly advised store managers not to advise queuers that they had low stocks, and to not hand-out tickets until at or near the opening time -- so effectively we all were used by Apple to make their "new iPhone release" look good!

Never again queuing for me, that's all I say. Bad Apple, really bad.
