Supply is short but will be getting better. Don't under estimate Apple. Apple may even be creating this launch day fiasco. Great marketing hats off!! All media will be covering this even more so than normal

Right. But selling the last gen model for a lower price has been the normal model for Apple the last few years. Just because they are branding it different this year doesn't make it a bad strategy.

I said the pricing was wrong. I didn't say it was a bad strategy. Where did you get that idea from?

In my view, Apple launched 100 million new smartphones yesterday. My office was filled with folks talking about how iOS 7 is new. Some had downloaded it, others are going to. Everyone got a new phone yesterday or today.

I'm getting the iPhone 5s, but I'm not sure if I'm going to be up at 3 and trying to log in. Still on the fence about that one. If I were on West Coast, I would do it. But there is the issue about waiting for the second or third batch to come out when the manufacturing issues are a little better worked out.

Space Gray - UK

So I have a friend in the UK who uses Three - just looked at their website and apparently as long as you want Space Gray in any capacity they are in-stock. Note that for all other colours/sizes it's October sometime. So I think it won't be as tragic as it seems if you go to a store, and are willing/wanting to choose Space Gray.
Of course, probably doesn't help me as I think I want Silver/White. But hopefully lining up about 5:30AM will be early enough.

This is a rather idiotic news report. People don't queue for last years model.

They do if last years model is a newer model for them, and colour is what they want. Afterall, This is Apple

Why do people queue anyway? Bragging rights? To be First? Add your reason here?

You got that right.

Now half the people in this conversation are grabbing their tents out of the garage and beginning a night of camping.

Anyone who would go camp out all night in front of an Apple Store would still buy an iPhone online in a couple weeks if they really had to. It's a sale either way. If anything, long lines just discourage regular people from wandering in the store and buying an iPhone there and then. Yes, Apple makes money selling accessories in the store, but artificial scarcity does nothing at all for Apple. They want to sell phones, or they don't make any money at all. Lines and frustrated customers who can't get what they want to give Apple money for doesn't help Apple's bottom line. They have to actually sell phones to make money.

it's 12:01 and the apple store is still down :(

Unfortunately, it goes on sale at 12:01 PDT across the US and Canada. Those of us east of the Rockies kind of get shafted. Apple apparently thinks California is the center of the universe.

Better ship time?

Has anyone got a better ship time then me so far?

I've never waited in the early morning lines, but I did snare an iPhone 5 opening weekend (after waking up a week earlier at 2:55am to get in on the pre-sales). I've always been an early adopter. I did the pre-sale because I was eligible for a subsidy. I went on Saturday of launch weekend because I decided I wanted a full-priced device that could be unlocked after all.

Code:
We'll have to wait until we get inside the chip to find out who manufactured it.

Unless I'm missing something…

If you scroll down into the "comment" area they have a post indicating they think it's a Samsung component. It wouldn't surprise me, since Samsung does have a 28nm foundry and has been a more reliable supplier (in general, not just for Apple) than TSMC.

Try again in about 2 hours. ;)

More like 3 (or 2.6 as I write this). I HATE Pacific time on iPhone launch day. :) Why can't Apple operate on Eastern Time one day a year? I'm sure people on the West Coast wouldn't mind being able to order the new iPhone at 9:01pm.

Whoops bad math on my part. Fixed!

I went into the store and pre-ordered.

Thanks for letting me know. Checked a few times on their site and it was just saying available 9/20. Just reloaded the page again and for the silver iPhone 5s 64GB (AT&T), it's now showing

On back order
In stock 2-4 weeks

Looking for in-store returns an error. Reserving one in-store may have been the way to go. I never would have thought it'd be good to try a 3rd-party like Target, especially before it officially went on sale.

EDIT: It's showing all the iPhones as being on backorder at least for online purchase at Target.

It's interesting what they're doing constraining the supply of the gold one....
Because isn't that exactly how actual gold/diamonds gain their value? When demand is greater than supply it drives demand up and makes something valuable, something "rare"? Haha nice one Apple.

I have a feeling...

Target is not getting many - the fact that they didn't get a shipment in my area when everyone else did really makes it fishy. I might be wrong and they have tons but I'm skeptical they will have more than ATT, Best Buy or Apple. Maybe the same as Walmart.

Maybe they can't sell yet so they are saying backorder....they have to wait until 12am.....PDT

For a company like apple, with the bizillions of cash, thats been doing this since 2007, i honestly don't know what they're up to. If its intentional, then its backfired as the limiting factor isn't that so many people want their phone (which gives good headlines), its that they've limited the numbers.

If its that they haven't made enough phones, its also bad news, as they should already know the numbers needed for an iphone release, and if they didn't make enough, someone should get fired, and/or they should've delayed it till they had the numbers.

It will be interesting to find out. That's what I would have thought too. The few reports we are getting stateside so far don't seem to be consistent in terms of who's getting what — some people are hearing good things or having luck while others / most aren't. I wonder if it's regional or something.

Yes, but it's different than what it was saying just a half hour ago. It used to just say it would be available 9/20 with no further details about order date and it wasn't possible to add it to your cart. Now all the models are saying 2-4 weeks and you can add it to your cart. So that's probably not a good sign, but I guess we'll see.

Probably a safe bet when they, along with Wal-Mart offered a discount on the iPhone 5c before it even officially launched. Apple doesn't exactly like instant discounting, even on its "moderately" priced products.

Apple under-estimated just how popular the 5S would be in those countries?

Apple should know this buy now. The closer to hone you get, the more it will be huge, the further out you get, the less buyers.

Will they ever learn? It happens every event.

I said the pricing was wrong. I didn't say it was a bad strategy. Where did you get that idea from?

So if EVERY single year, last year's model for $99 was the right price......... why is it the wrong price now then, pray tell??

I believe for online orders it isn't until the phone is actually activated. It certainly isn't before it is shipped because accounting rules don't allow that (the earliest it can be is when it is shipped). So I agree that launch weekend sales might be less than last year. If that's the case, then Apple might announce launch weekend orders on Monday.

Anything ship to the carrier or retail store like BB is counted as sales. Anything else will have to be paid by a customer before it is counted.
