If they decide to keep the C line I imagine it'll go:

  • iPhone 6 - starting at $199
  • iPhone 5SC (5S guts, C plastic body) - $99
  • iPhone 5C (5 guts, C plastic body) - Free
- Subsidized pricing of course.

If they decide to scrap the C line I imagine it'll go:

  • iPhone 6 - starting at $199
  • iPhone 5S - $99
  • iPhone 5C (5 guts, C plastic body) - Free
    - reasoning: 5 body is already discontinued
- Subsidized pricing of course.

The 5.5" will be the wildcard if it exists as a production product. There is little proof anymore that it currently does, at least in time for the Sept 9th event.

I think it's already cluttered... (to be clear I am agreeing with you guys)

4S
5C
5S

Which to get? It's not clear to the average Joe. It's not even clear to a lot of the salesmen I hear talking about phone features.

I think it's safe to say the 4S is gone. But the imagine adding the upcoming two models to the range, just won't work I don't think, definitely very confusing for the average Joe. So one of the 5's will surely go? And I'm sure they'll limit the one that remains to just one storage size as is custom. It's just the folks that want the 5S, or max 4 inch screen, and follow Apple news, may be taking a risk if it's the 5S that remains but only in the smallest storage version or worse still the 5S is ditched all together and they're stuck with the option of that as their only 4 inch screen. Some people just want the best specs no matter what and also as had been mentioned it does off course future proof for a couple of years at least.

I'm now thinking if I should go and change my 5 for a 5s to have some extra lifespan before needing to evaluate if there will be any alternatives by then. I certainly will not have a bigger phone given that the 5 is already too big (especially now that I have to carry around two of them most days).

It's an overall sad development that Apple caves in (yet again) to fulfill ghetto consumer needs over business user needs. I hope they keep something small around, tighten up their security protocols for email and make a bunch of core applications more reliable instead of going for the gaming crowd and other nonsense.

I guess if the 4 inch max screen size is that important to you, and the fact that the extra power of the 5S will easily hold for a couple of years, or even 1 year minimum for very intensive apps, then it's an option you probably need to consider quickly! Bear in mind, it might still be in the line up though, but for now it's anybody's guess obviously.

I think they are certainly making large strides towards making it more business useable. The sheer popularity of the phone means lots of business users have one so they have to cater. Actually I think they've come a very long way in that respect, it's realty settled as a business tool in the entrepreneur market, the tech savvy business owners designers etc. Sure it's got some way to go with the likes of accountancy firms, but you'll be hard pressed to find a management consultancy that doesn't at least make provision for iPhone integration within it's IT infrastructure!

Even if they limited new ones to one size, there would still be a lot of used ones for sale.

Yeah off course. But the 'newness' factor. Plus the security of buying such an expensive product from other than Apple. eBay and the like can now be I'd say 80% safe, it's just that niggle that something might go wrong. Unfortunately I've seen it happen to my cousin. Off course if your source is trustworthy and you don't mind/ prefer used then they'll literally be everywhere when the time comes as users offload and upgrade.

I agree with the above quote in general, certainly the line up for iPhone will be cluttered if they don't do something about the current line up when the two variants of the 6 are announced and released. (But I do think they have at least started to declutter their other ranges; the MBA's and rMBP's are getting there, slowly, but still getting there, probably even more so when they announce the new 12" MBA)

I think most of their product lines need a complete review.

Steve Jobs was all about keeping the products concise, where's Tim Cook seems to want a variant of each product to suit all types of people.

Personally I think the current line up a little overwhelming. No matter which product you look at, it's over saturated. The MacBook lineup has a 2012 non retina MacBook Pro, 2 retina models at 13", 2 retina models at 15", 2 different types of MacBook Air, with a third rumoured to be on it's way; the iMac saw a super low end version introduced this year; The iPad range has 2 different Mini models, the iPad Air, the iPad with Retina Display (which needs a name change, it's misleading, as the Air also has a retina display), with another new iPad Air right around the corner, etc...

The iPhone line is about to get pretty hectic, we're going to (most likely) have the iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, 4.7" iPhone 6, 5.5" iPhone 6, with the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S still used with high popularity as a recent phone.

EDIT: I think both the smart phone and tablet markets are mature enough to not need a redesign every 1-2 years. Why not just have an iPhone (with different colours and storage options), an iPad & iPad Mini (with different colours and storage options), and stick with a solid, well liked design for a few years and incrementally upgrade the internals, ala the MacBook and iMac ranges - drop the numbers and all the other marketing nonsense, just iPhone, iPad/iPad Mini.

I hope they keep the 5s going and drop the price $100 for the holidays. Promised my wife one for Christmas. The 4" screen is plenty big enough for us.

The 5s is $79 at walmart right now. That's not a sale, it's their going price for upgrade eligible customers.

I think this time around they may keep the 5S as is, just for those that still want a premium built iPhone but with a smaller screen.

Not everybody will want a 4.7" iPhone, and the 5S will still be a superb smartphone even after the 6 is launched.

And if Apple reduce the price by $100 ect, then it still sell extremely well.

Very logical thinking. It's the only thing that makes sense. I've heard people saying that Apple would put the 5s into the 5c body and create the 5CS.. So they'd keep the 5c and
This 5CS this having two plastic phones at the bottom of the lineup... That's not going to happen...

Apple wants to get to where it is hitting every possible market. That's why keeping the 5s as is ... Is all that makes sense... Therefore you
Will have 2 4" screens, one with aluminum and one with plastic ... One 4.7" screen that is a premium device and a 5.5" screen that will positioned as a new product line all together.

People really overthink this stuff. Only because Apple threw a wild card one year. The only reason the 5c was released was to drop the 5 so it wouldn't take away the 5s sales. Well the 5s and 6 looks nothing alike...
