It's almost half of Androids share and dropping, I'd say Apple is starting to lose some of its appeal, especially after some of the missteps lately.

Why would they want an iPhone, they're nothing special, especially compared to more expensive Android phones, I wouldn't want people to think I have an iPhone, I like to be a bit different to the herd mentality.

Huh?

Your first response more or less states that iPhones are in the minority, and your second point states you don't want to be seen with an iPhone, and want to be different than the "herd mentality".

So to clarify, you actually are subscribing to the herd mentality, in going with the more popular Android platform, and joining the masses. ;)

I guess that makes me a herd extrovert, as I have devices form both within my possession.

That's why I put it in quotes, switch it for any flagship smartphone, outside the US (where the price includes taxes, VAT), the only "smartphones" you get for $100 and under are android knock offs with 256/512 RAM, they are not really in the same market as an iPhone/Galaxy/M8 whatever you want to call it.

They are not smartphones, they're barely feature phones, have you held one of these?

What's the deal with Windows Phone in Italy? That's a massive anomaly, so presumably there's some reason for it…?

I don't know but I speculate that it's a poor country right now but unlike say China doesn't have this massive divide where you're either on $500 a year or raking in billions through grey money.

So while in say China the poor can't afford phones (like... REALLY can't physically afford a phone, don't believe the BS, there's no Chinese 'middle class' you're either earning $500k+ in a country where you can live off $500 a year or you're earning more than your average 'rich' westerner) also the rich over there all buy the most expensive phone and plate it in gold just to show off... Italy? I speculate that while people are 'poor', people have enough money to buy phones, but have limited money so they look around a bit more. There's a lot more style over in Italy (rather than bling bling I have the biggest screen!!!) and Nokia's European (with European styling) so maybe their cheaper Windows phone models appeal to the European market a little more?

Pure speculation of course... but I'm 1/2 Italian (was born there) and my 1/2 Italian instinct tells me that Windows phones are more stylish than Androids (I know, doesn't line up with the stats). But if I REALLY couldn't afford an iPhone, I'd get a Windows phone. I simply wouldn't consider and Androids. Call me biased... yes I am. I hate android, deal with it!

Not surprising at all. Remember Android has devices that without a contract cost's less than 50$ - Ofcourse they sell - and well....

But also take into account most every commercial for phone carriers talks up the iphone. "We'll even give you up to $350 trade in off your old phone for a new phone..." It's more than a wash. If you want an apple phone bad enough you can get one for free.

Gone are the days android are cheaper. Gone are the days it's a premium phone only middle class and above can afford. Go to jury duty in your town and see who has what phone. You'll be surprised. (or your local WalMart or Costco).

Wow, Windows phones are down across the board are down, though iOS down in the US is surprising..

Considering how IDC's figures on Mac sales were way off compared to what Apple actually reported I'm not inclined to buy any of these research firms reports. I don't think their data is that accurate. I was in an AT&T store last week and they said they wouldn't have new iPhones in stock until mid to late November. I was at an Apple store last night and they said they do get shipments each day but they sell out as soon as they come in. But I'm supposed to believe iPhone market share is contracting in the US? Yet increasing in Europe (which is probably more price sensitive than the U.S.)? BS.

Wow that is a huge swing for Japan.

Yeah weird swings all over the board given how well the iPhone has been selling!! What's the story?

I haven't lived in Japan for a while but they loved their JAPANESE phones when I was over there. Are the J-Phones using Android now? (In which case it wouldn't be your Samsung/HTC...etc Androids that we see over here, it would be Japanese manufactures making phones for Japanese people).

They certainly had a thing with phones when I lived there! I loved my J-Phone...

Will you say it's dropping if Apple gains market share in Q1?

I'd say little of Apple's appeal has been lost considering they're about to sell record numbers of iPhones this quarter. Most people would interpret that as greater appeal.

Yes they need a full quarter. And they will get that, but next quarter. This is not a very useful quarter to look at the iOS vs Android fight because this is Apple's weakest quarter as folks hold off for the 6 and then Apple is unable to meet demand. Next quarter is Apple's best quarter and there will be no new flagship HTC or Galaxy S. Apple will take back market share in the US by the end of next quarter.

IDC has shown how meaningless these type of reports are. IDC guesstimated that Apple sold 4.98M Macs in the quarter whereas Apple actually reported 5.52M sales.

Apple is doom.

Even if it were 2012 and you had executed this joke/meme properly it would still have not been funny.

As usual, they publish the market share in smartphone units. That is, they don't cover either the high end smartphone market, which is where Apple is playing, and they don't cover the whole phone market, which isn't skewed by the fact that people switch from cheap feature phones to cheap smartphones.

Indeed, this could just as well be an indication that the US was faster in the transition from dumbphones to smarthones and the market is maturer there. I also read an article a while back that dumbphone converters first tend to go for cheap smartphones and then go up the chain. This means that in many cases Android might be the first benificiary before Apple comes into play.

That's why it is indeed more interesting to see this broken down for the flagship segment.

I'll be honest, I don't know enough about this company to trust the numbers. comScore's numbers are about the only ones I watch. The other thing making this hard to believe is the fact that Apple has been selling record numbers of iPhones and Apple Pay is giving them unprecedented coverage. I'll be watching comScore's numbers at the Q4/Q1 marks.

Must every thread be hijacked by Andriod fanboies that actually wish they could afford an iPhone?

Without a contract? Which ones?

I'm surprises about Windows phones - smaller market share...

Do you ever leave you home? Almost every super market sells smartphones without contract for almost nothing (android)

We have a Samsung Galaxy Trend Plus S7580 for the car. It cost me 60$ and thats absolutly a okay phone.

Apple's actual sales and stock price are the numbers I watch.

As far as I know in Italy Windows Phones overtook iPhones in sales since 2013. Reasons are most likely incentives from operators and availability of low-price models. If I remeber correctly Windows phones were dominating the sub-250/300€ marketshare as low-cost smartphone choice for previous dumb/featurephone users.

Well, according to Apple, they're selling all they have. If I had to guess, they may have been hurt by the issues with sapphire screen production, preventing them from making as many as they would have liked. It's hard to judge what this really means...

Samsung Galaxy Trend Plus S7580

I would fire the person in charge of the Samsung naming schemes. Not saying Apple's are the best, but at least there is some logic to the system...

To truly understand what is going you need a lot more information. You need total addressible market for all these countries, information on smartphone segments and sales numbers. This is a combination of many many factors and cannot be boiled down to one isse at any one of the manufacturers on the list.

Ironic really that Europe plays such a big part of Apple yet we get limited use products ..when we could be helping them grow further, three things come to mind:

iTunes Radio
Apple Pay
Apple TV Content

Yet they only worry about how many they ship

There are still thousands of orders left which have not yet been delivered (hence why it still takes weeks for iPhones to be dispatched)

We don't know what is going on in the background and that hasn't yet been announced. In addition the things that you mention are dependent on many complicated contract structures. I too wish Apple would be faster with this, but something tells me record and film studio bosses are slowing this down.

Look at the DVD market. We are still plagues by this nonsense region coding stuff that doesn't make sense anymore at all.

Market share for Germany cannot be right. I know only one guy who uses an Android phone - everybody else bought a new iPhone this season and I know many people.

I hope you’re being sarcastic. ;)

Since when are Apple buyers the herd? The market share says otherwise. If anything the Samsung Android buyers are the herd...

I don’t see any data relating to specific Android devices. This market-share data is purely based on OS and could likewise, and probably, include many low-budget devices as well.

Curious that Apple has such a strong presence in Anglo-Saxon countries. Is there any other reason why Apple is so popular in the UK but not in the rest of Europe? Germany has many of the same Apple services and products available as the UK.
