P.S. what happened to the "Nest" thread, that they had to close it?

The moderators have really been working overtime on the threads here. I have seen them close and reopen threads without hesitation. I have been warned about the most trivial stuff. "Keep it relevant to the topic"? Since when have we not been allowed to have a sense of humor and have fun? It's a new day at Macrumors.

does this means it's finally coming to iPad?

It's a given it's coming to the iPad, should have been in it this year but it's something to hold off to make the iPad air 2 more attractive

Just like how apple didn't put Siri on the iPhone 4

And yet somehow my gut tells me there will be even bigger delays for the iPhone 6 launch...

As there should be. smartphones with 4" screens don't cut it anymore in 2014. Unless it's a budget phone.

Or incorporate the fingerprint sensor into the display.

Considering that Apple has a few patents specifically for this, it isn't out the realm of possibility.

Apple is just like Microsoft in proving names don't have to make sense in product context.

intriguingly this is the third year the media has called the new model the iphone 6.

product iterations and model names are two entirely different things. do you car the (for example) "Accord 37"? but that's the iteration number! nope. you call it the model name... an "Accord 2013" or whatever.

not a difficult subject in my mind, but I know some of you get hung up on it for some reason.

I've never had a significant problem with the touch ID. Works smoothly enough that I don't like the idea of using a device without it.

I'm on a 2-year cycle with my iPhone upgrades, so I skipped the iPhone 5S. I'm really looking forward to the iPhone 6.

I'm on a 0 day cycle with my iPhone 5S, life is short, get the best there is :D

Wish my retina iPad mini had it

Obviously this is to include ipad but, could it be for a larger iphone?

I could be misinterpreting what you are saying, but making the change from an 8" Fab to a 12" fab means that the wafers that contain the chips have more chips on them, increasing the number of chips that are produced at a single time. It has nothing to do with the actual size of the chips on the wafer.

The button/sensor will not be bigger for the iPad nor for any larger iPhone should it ever be made.

I'm surprised no one has started a class-action suit. I've tried all the suggestions, I've had three different 5s units, and all of them lose the fingerprint within a day of recording it. I understand that some people have no problem with it, but it's obvious that many others are having similar problems as I. Something about our fingerprints causes Touch ID to corrupt or lose the data over time. But Apple doesn't seem to care.

I was frustrated with TouchID for a while until I discovered that the home button seems to attract a lot of oily prints (ironically). A quick swipe with your shirt or a cloth will get the finger print scanner working again. I find myself cleansing the home button at random times just out of habit now. Is weird that the home button doesn't have an anti-fingerprint coating.

Unlocking and passwords are a pain.
I'd like to see touch ID everywhere. Not only on iPhones and iPads but also on Macs.

This is great news.

I really hate the Home button, Double tap to multitask? Not fun. Why not get rid of it and use swiping upward for multitasking. That makes sense more than current CC.

That is outrageous. The least Apple should do is downgrade you (and others with this unreadable-fingerprint handicap) to an iPhone 5C or an iPhone 5 at no charge.

Trouble here.

I wish I could get a report on the accuracy of my sensor. I would guess it would look something like

8% - 1 attempt.
14% - 2 attempts
22% - 3 attempts
43% - 4 or more.

I know that I never get better than a 50% hit rate before I lock myself out. Accuracy is always higher right after enrollment, but after a day or two starts dropping. I used to enroll every week but have up. I have tried enrolling the same finger twice but didn't see any noticeable change.

I hope they improve it for the ip6, it's a nice feature, when it works.

For me its arond 90+% with my right thumb but only around 50% with my left thumb...I've had the phone since early november..

It works fine in cold weather for me.

May be if the temperature change is too great between setting up your fingerprint and using it ? If so, just register 2 prints ! 1 for warm weather and 1 for cold.

It works fine for me so far.
I'm not completely convinced that the issues with Touch ID are due to temperature changes. Since I registered both thumbs I noticed that my "success rate" has greatly improved.

It is interesting how different people's experiences are. I love touch ID and it works wonderfully for me.

I also hear the same thing with Find My Friends. It's one of the most used and most useful features on the phone for me, but I have heard plenty of people say it is the most useless feature.

To each his own.:)
I find that Touch ID works better for me since I registered both my thumbs. If it fails on the first try I just use my other thumb and now my success rate is about 80%.
I've never hear anyone saying that Find My Friends was a useless feature however. Quite the contrary I've talked with Android owners who wished their phone had a similar feature...

Or incorporate the fingerprint sensor into the display.

that will take some time I am sure. The ring around the sensor is to put electrical energy into your finger in order to prevent the whirls of your fingerprint from collapsing when you press your finger against it. might be hard for them to apply that to a piece of glass although if they went back to a metal mid frame as that leak suggested that everyone said was phoney maybe it would be possible

oh good...

this will prob be a normal thing now on iPhone, and gives us all something else to pass bugs along for...

Some security is better than others, but since Apple's targeting TouchID "as better security" than your password, then that's what it should be, always

Unfortunately this is a fad,,, its not better than your password if it doesn't work in all circumstances to begin with is it

Maybe Apple should have used a slightly different motto.

1. *2G
2. 3G
3. 3GS
4. 4
5. 4S
6. 5/5C
7. 5S
8. 6?

In the same way, Windows 8 is no less than the 10th consumer release for Windows
1. 1.0
2. 2.0
3. 3.0/3.1
4. 95
5. 98/98 SE
6. ME
7. XP
8. Vista
9. 7
10. 8/8.1
11. 9?

Yes, but windows XP is not a direct descendant of ME, but rather Windows 2000, which was windows NT4.0's successor.

It goes something like:

It starts with 3.1, because it was released in the time of windows 3.1
Then it is 3.5/3.51,
4.0
5.0 (win 2000)
5.1 (xp)
6.0 (vista)
6.1 (7)
6.2 (8)
6.3 (8.1)

Waaay more complicated :D

My Touch ID now works well over 90 percent of the time, compared to what it did when I first set it up.

When I was scanning my prints, I found that when scanning the various parts of the finger or thumb. I found that only moving the finger or thumb a very small amount, rather than moving it a larger amount from its last scan position, gave me a lot more accuracy with Touch ID.
