Apple has to follow to sell, to make their shareholders happy :)

This is also a BS reason to justify making a bigger phone for the mainstream.

Don't get me wrong, we can't just have phones for the techsavy people.
But as a techsavy person it frustrates me when the following happens:

Samsung Galaxy S5 user: Omfg your screen is so small, why don't you have one with a bigger screen?

Me: Because I like iOS and I don't have big hands?

Samsung Galaxy S5 user: What's iOS?

Me: the operating system that my phone is running, like android is running on yours.

Samsung Galaxy S5 user: Well I don't know anything about operating systems and all I know is that I wanted a new phone and this 1 had a bigger screen + it was cheaper, and the guy at the store said it was the latest one. :D!

Me: What do you use it for then?

Samsung Galaxy S5 user: Oh just, whatsapp mostly a little browsing sometimes.

Which results in me shaking my head in disappointment
These are the people who Apple is making phones for? it's all becoming a cluttered vast sea of phones that meet standards of people who are not smart enough to understand what a smartphone can actually do. MOST people aren't even aware of what an android phone is capable of, all they hear is BIGGER screen and CHEAPER, and their minds are made up. I don't think you should be making phones for those kinds of people.

Protruding camera. Big goofy lines. I think maybe  should replace Ive… he's lost the plot, what a cheap ****** looking crock.

That's what worries me. The latest iPod touch is probably one of Apple's worst designs in recent memory and it looks a lot like the iPhone design leaks. But hey, no Steve no veto it seems like.

er not quite, the ipod touch is one of the best designs they have ever made, absolutely stunning. Just a shame it has that black patch for wifi etc.

The only good design Steve had a part of was the 5. I've sold my 5s in preparation for the 6, and I am currently using a 4s. The 5 design is so much better.

All looking good for the 5.5" iPhone. It sounds like a lot of people dislike the design...

Make that "a lot of people who dislike the design speak up about it". The complainers are always a vocal majority. Especially people who complain about lines that they don't even see while using the phone.

When they went from the rounded design of the 3GS to the "flat" design of the iPhone 4, there was also a lot of complaining. In the meantime, it turned around to the iPhone 4 being considered a "design masterpiece".

Luckily, I don't buy phones based on what they look like, as I actually use them, as opposed to them being fashion accessories. My phones go into a case anyway, so as far as I am concerned, they can add pink blinking LEDs to the back. I knew someone once who bought CDs and books purely based on their cover. Goes somewhat in the same direction for me as buying phones based on their design.

That the final version is thicker and heavier than the prototype could indicate a bumped battery (capacity)

Make that 'a small vocal minority speak up about it'. That is why u had 'lots' of people complaining about the 4, but is now considered a masterpiece.

These kinds of things remind me why I hate the mainstream.
I don't wanna sound like a hipster, but seriously why 5.5, who in the damn world has hands that big and can still use their phone with 1 hand. What happened to small and comfortable to use after taking it out of your pocket?

What ever happened to technology having to get smaller and smaller, why are we going in the opposite direction? only to realise later that we want things smaller again because it's all too big.

I was thinking the same thing, who really needs a 5.5 inch screen on a phone. However, Apple's marketing research has obviously indicated strong enough demand to warrant the move towards bigger screens. Although, I am going to reserve judgement until September the 9th.

That protruding camera ring is a big of a turn off. What the hell were they thinking of?

At first I was upset. But when I saw the actual specs, not so much. On the 4.7" iPhone, it protrudes about 1/2 millimeter. That's almost negligible, and as someone else mentioned a case will make it a non-issue.

My concern is that the phone is getting so thin, other aspects will begin to suffer. For instance, how much longer before the 1/8" headphone jack is too big? Then Apple will have to resort to proprietary headphones again.

Actually they all do at some point now since 2012 with their flagships. Also if they stop thats what the XDA forums are for so its no problem.

Er..No what you have just described there is EXACTLY the problem.

Flagship only and having to crowd source forum up dates. Geek hell.

Sony don't give a figs arse is the problem.

I wouldn't want to have to jump though hoops to do any sort of updates.

The biggest mistake google made with android was making it so fragmented and allowing Forceware crappola to be mandatory on a phone. If they have forced a stock android with Manufacturers only creating skins and overlay programs instead of messing with the source. Android world would be a lot nice place to be.

And this is why I hate hipsters.

Why, who in the damn world thinks that everybody sees one handed operation as the main selling point/requisite on any modern smartphone?

Reading, playing, navigating the web, watching videos and typing faster with both hands are bigger priorities for me. Throw in a bigger battery and a bigger iphone becomes a much better iPhone for millions of people.

Hey, maybe you shouldn't have a smartphone at all if you do not understand my POV. Maybe you just make calls and some SMS? Otherwise if you think that the current iPhones are great for navigating the web/reading/playing you have low standards and/or are comparing it to a Nokia 3310 instead of modern devices.

The Galaxy S5 is slower, has worse software, worse support, looks worse, but it is better for every single one of those tasks. Get it?

Who in the whole damn world buys a big screened phone to be used exclusively with one hand?

I was thinking the same thing, who really needs a 5.5 inch screen on a phone.

personally I dont, but I can see the attraction to folks who want whats effectively an 'ipad-nano' with call capabilities rather than carry two separate devices about.

You say you hate the mainstream but what's more mainstream than the 'use 1 handed' argument or the 'pocket' argument. It doesn't get more mainstream than that. Apple's marketing convinced many this was essential. Apple's upcoming marketing campaign will convince many the opposite is true. 5.5" is big, but it's not monstrous or any other hyperbolic term. I see women with these phones all the time. They seem to have no problem wielding them.

I think the use case changed the technological focus on size. Phones got smaller because we called and sent texts. Video made larger more attractive. Reading made larger more attractive; along with email and work capabilities. In short, the internet and all the entertainment, education, and productivity it puts in your hands begs for a larger screen. Looking at it from that context, I think larger phones were a natural progression. It's funny, but it seems the phone in a smartphone is only a secondary concern. Heck, even most reviews now barely mention it or only mention it in passing.
