I remember back in summer of 2010, I saw a high school teenage girl hold an HTC Evo 4G, and my first thought was how large that phone was. At 4.3 inches, it was gigantic for its time. Yet, the phone was actually 2mm shorter than the iPhone 5 but wider and thicker. As late as 2013 when I was still going through my transitional phase with a 4.7" M7, I thought the iPhone 4/Nexus One were the perfect size for one-handed use except I came to realize that I don't use one hand when I browse or text. Even when I had a BlackBerry QWERTY phone like the Bold 9000, I still held it with two hands to text.

Now I have a 5" Mi 3 with similar dimensions of the M9, and when I went back trying an iPhone 3Gs last week just for kicks, I literally had to do a double take on how small it was compared next to my Xiaomi. I just gave it back to my Stepfather after a day. Screen was blurry, laggy, crashes, etc. Harder to text and remember when the first iPhone 2G came out, it took some time getting used to typing on it since the screen was so narrow and we couldn't turn off the stupid autocorrect until iOS3. Imagine it was only a few years ago where my ideal screen size was 3.5-4.3" and to see how quickly it changed once I got used to using a larger display after a couple years.

I believe 6" should be max though just like we rarely see anymore screens under 4". I don't have any holster case to fit an Asus Fonepad 7. As big I can go is Huawei Ascend Mate7/Nexus 6. Between iPhones, I pick the Plus version every single time unless I need a backup and the iPhone 6 would be nice to use on certain occasions when you want to carry it in your pocket.

I think there is a significant difference between thinking 4.3" phones were big back in the day and being able to get used to an iPhone 6 Plus. It is considerably bigger and carries more of an ergonomic disadvantage than various devices under 4.5". If people feel it doesn't fit in their pockets or it's cumbersome to use on handed, that isn't something they get used to, it's an informed choice. For those who do like the 6 Plus, great, it's a brilliant phone too.

Bought the 6 in October and then switched to the 6 Plus in December.

The 6 Plus is obviously better for viewing videos and other things that benefit from the larger screen. But the iPhone 6 is definitely smoother and stutters far less. It was also the more comfortable phone to hold in your hand. I think if not for the incredible battery life of the 6 Plus then I would go back to the 6. Both fit in all of my jeans pockets but one thing I miss was that i could go running with the 6 in my pocket. The 6 Plus is just too large for that activity.

Having had both, the 6 plus battery is light-years better
Simply because it's larger, not because it's different/better in some way. A larger battery attached to a 6 would make it last just as long (if not longer probably).

I'm thinking the plus is better because with the regular 6 we deal with the FaceTime camera being obstructed whereas I haven't heard of that on the plus.

I should sell the 6 and get the plus for that reason.
FaceTime being obstructed? By what? Haven't come across an issue like that.

I understand the preferences, but the "not fitting in pockets" part I don't get. It's 3" wide and 6" tall. Who has less than 3" wide pockets? Mine are closer to 6" width and no I do not wear baggy pants.

I use the 6 plus and enjoy it. But it has crashed and stuttered more than any other iphone at first release.

Disappointed they put the same cpu/gpu to power a larger screen.

But I still like it. The battery is incredible compared to the 5 or 4s or 3g.

I notice the presence of the iPhone 6 in my pocket and when I trialled the 6 Plus I found the top of the device was visible. That to me is awkward but others are fine with it. One handed use is essential to me too and that is only just achievable with the 6 with an adapted grip. It's up to the individual of course and in my view the size is difficult to overcome for my needs, which is why it was never in the running for my last upgrade. I see the pro's for both devices and it's down to the person to tally up which they feel is better.

Of course it is -- in the general sense. It has a bigger screen, better battery, better camera, better OS functionality... If it wasn't "better" in some real sense, they couldn't charge more for it, could they?

But that doesn't mean it's better for everyone. A broadsword is better than a kitchen knife... unless you can't lift a broadsword. ...or are trying to spread jam.

For me the 6 plus is the much better phone. I didn't even consider the 6, after seeing the plus.
I actually got the 6 first. But it was just too small for me and ended up getting the 6+. IMHO the 6 should have had a 5 inch screen.

I think 5 inches at 1080p would have been quite nice. The S5 was a decent size. Big enough to really enjoy content but still really portable and very comfortable to use in one hand.

They can charge more for it simply because it's bigger and requires more materials. It doesn't have to be better for extra cost to be "justified".

False. If there is no real advantage to the bigness and additional materials, then they can't sucessfully charge more for it. If toaster b only separates itself from toaster a by being bigger and requiring more materials, it would have to be sold for LESS, not more.

From the manufacturer point of view they spend more money on more materials so surely they would charge more. A larger battery requires more battery material which costs more and same goes for a larger screen and a larger body. The size itself brings better usability to various people, so it's worth somewhat more to them as well, for example, to have a battery that lasts longer simply because it's larger, not because it's somehow a better battery in itself.

A 5" screen is the perfect size for a smartphone IMO. Portability is a key area and the size & weight of the 6+ doesn't justify the minor gains in media consumption.
Whenever I pick up my mother's 5" Samsung I always feel that the size is just perfect. It's also super-light. My 6+ feels like a brick in comparison. I would accept the limitations of the 6+ size and weight if it smoked the 4.7" version in performance, but the opposite is actually true. The 6+ would benefit from massively uprated specs over its smaller brother in order to make that extra bulk and the loss of one-handed use worth it, but as things stand it's the first version of a product that needs a rethink.

The 6 plus feels a lot better in the hand than other phablets I've used in the past e.g the Galaxy note series and the LG G3. In comparison to those phones it's light and compact.

I haven't used the 6 at length so I don't know how it compares to the plus in terms of performance. However the larger, higher resolution screen and excellent battery life make it well worth carrying around that 'extra bulk'.

The battery life is a massive plus it has to be said, but unless you genuinely need a 10 hour+ battery life to get you through the day then I don't see the other negatives being worth it.
As for the screen, it isn't such a wow feature. The screen on my iPhone 5 was perfectly clear and decent enough. I struggle to notice that my 6+ is any better to be honest, although I know that it is.

It looks like we're getting to just arguing semantics here. The larger point is simply that people don't pay for materials - they pay for the benefits and advantages those materials offer. So, generally speaking, people are willing to spend more when something offers more advantage - regardless of whether that advantage is associated with size (which is in and of itself, something of a DISadvantage). But from the start, I certainly concede that "better" in this sense doesn't mean it's better for any one specific persons needs. And I think that should be enough room to find common ground.

How about those of us who must say "don't put it in pockets"? I have an intensely physical job (pretend I said "football player + logger + power lifter + professional mover" and you'll get the idea or what my day is like) and I need to keep my phone in an Otterbox Defender case on a belt clip. It still gets banged into occasionally but nothing too terrible. If it was in my pocket, it would be saturated in sweat and constantly hit by heavy weight. Plus I'd have to stop what I'm doing and stand up in order to take the phone out of my pocket and answer a call or incoming text.

So, while I would really enjoy having the 6+, its not practical for me in the slightest. My 5 contract is up soon and it'll be hard enough finding a proper hardshell case and belt clip for the 6, never mind finding one for the 6+

What I'd really like to find is a hardshell shock case with a sliding cover to block the camera.
