I visited an Apple Store yesterday and handled both of the new iPhones. Design-wise, I think they are probably the sexiest iPhones yet. The rounded edges reminded me of the very first iPhone, only significantly thinner. However, that also means they feel extremely slippery. There just isn’t much to grab onto. Even holding them flat in the palm of my hand they felt slippery. I predict a LOT of naked iPhone 6s are going to hit the ground as owners lose their grip on the slippery devices. There’s no way I would own one without having it in a case. Not so much to protect it during a fall, but to PREVENT the drop in the first place.
The 6 Plus is ridiculously large. Even with the Reachability feature (double-tap the home button to bring the top of the screen down to about the middle of the screen) it just feels awkward because it’s so darn wide. Stretching my thumb to reach the far side made it feel like I was going to lose my grip on the phone and possibly drop it. My fingers didn’t feel like they had a good grip on the opposite side of the phone as I was stretching out to reach the far side of the screen with my thumb. For me, the 6 Plus is simply not a device you operate with one hand. And that means it’s not a device I’m interested in owning.
After handling the 6 Plus, the non-Plus 6 felt much better. It is amazing how much difference the loss of 0.8 inches makes between the 6 and 6 Plus (4.7 vs. 5.5), yet, the 0.7 inches difference between the 5S and 6 (4.0 vs. 4.7) doesn’t seem quite as overwhelming. But the far corner of the 6’s screen still felt like quite a reach with my thumb. It’s definitely useable with one hand, but just barely. And without the need to double-tap the home button to drop the screen. ‘Reachability’ is nice, but it would annoy the heck out of me if I had to double-tap regularly just to use my phone.
The 6 Plus is definitely a Phablet. I can understand the attraction of the larger screen, but I feel the better solution (for me) is the 4.7-inch screen for on-the-go use and an iPad at home.
I don't plan to buy either one anytime soon. But if Apple had made the regular 6 the same thickness as the 6 Plus (thus increasing battery life) AND incorporated the optically stabilized lens into the regular 6, I think I'd be upgrading to a 6 right now. I'm not going to be carrying around a Phablet just to get the features I want. My iPhone 5S is the best smartphone I've ever owned, it still works flawlessly, so I can wait.
