My launch day iPhone 5 came with scuffs and a small ding in it.

After about a year it started shutting off with 20-40% battery remaining. Nothing I did would stop it. I ordered a kit and replaced the battery myself, which I will never do again as there was so much glue and I thought I was going to break the phone the whole time. One month later there was a recall and my serial number was indicated.

A few months after that, the sleep/wake button died. Then there was a recall for that. Again, my phone was involved in that recall as well.

My wife's iPhone 5 also came scuffed but did not have the other 2 issues and was not in either recall.

That generation really made me feel like a fool as I lived with both the battery and button issues for months before the recalls. It was a total lemon for me and I switched both of our phones to Android (HTC M8) instead of the 5S or 6.

But then a few months ago I got so pissed at the Android phone that we switched back to an iPhone 6. I tried to speak with my wallet, but really just ended up delaying giving Apple my money for 8 months or so! Oh well. It's just that the grass really isn't greener.
That's why I always go with S cycle phones. It's expected that there will be some issues with a new design(apple is not perfect). But, they do rectify those issues in S cycle.

Oh no. My iPhone 5 was just fine. Ok. I had a mic problem within the first two months and it was replaced, and a swollen battery a year after that (again replaced) but all in all the iPhone 5 was POS for me.

I brought all those issues up as a counterpoint to the OP on there not being any issues at all regarding the iPhone 5.

I fixed your post, you accidentally referred to being on your 3rd iPhone after a year and two months from initial purchase as "solid". Autocorrect! AMIRITE?!?! :D

Call it whatever you want, but unlike some members here who went through 5-10 iPhone 5's trying to get one that wasn't scuffed, didn't have a bad home button or various other issues both with their first iPhone 5 and it's replacement, I think I did fairly well.

A mic and a swollen battery in the span of a little over three years.

Oh, I guess I could call it a POS in light of the fact that the phone it replaced (an HTC Touch Pro) lasted 3.5 years with no issues whatsoever - if you want to.

It is worth mentioning though that Black and Slate was discontinued the following year by Space Grey, so I think that was part of the reason why Apple wanted to discontinue the iPhone 5 since it would of cost too much to release an "updated" model with a Space Grey option, even though they changed the iPad Mini 1 and iPod Touch 5 to Space Grey. If Apple comes out with the new Rose Gold color to replace Gold, maybe Apple will decide once again to either discontinue or build new colored models.

They shouldnt replace Gold, too popular. At the most they may refer to it as "Yellow Gold" but I still seriously doubt any discontinuations. Just four colours.

I thought this was generally the case with new releases, as far as retail models, but they will discontinue it completely as far as refurb/warranty models.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple does this. Think about it. They would have to make the phones $200 cheaper in once! And as I saw people mentioning already, iPhone 6 Plus would cannibalize the iPhone 6s Plus. I made a comparison of how that would look like. Left is the current pricing and at the right how it would be if they would keep selling the iPhone 6 Plus. Assuming the iPhone 5s won't be sold then by the way. And in €, because I know those prices without looking for them on Apple's website.

That doesn't fit in Apple's business model. And again, it will cannibalize the newer iPhones. A lot people are still interested in the iPhone 6, but find them too expensive. If the price is going down with €200, they will choose for that rather than for the latest iPhone. Apple just can't do that. At least, that's what I think. So my guess is indeed they will cut off the iPhone 6 Plus. It will be 'replaced' by the iPhone 6 in terms of pricing.

As we come up on the event, it looks like chances are the 6 will indeed be staying but the 6 Plus will be leaving. I have a hard time thinking that Apple would want to sell a phone that has a much bigger screen and higher res display for the same price as the 4.7' 6S. The Plus model always felt like the "one-time alteration", and I expect Apple to try and push the 6S Plus by getting the 6 Plus out of the way. And I know this is not a big deal, but I think Bendgate actually had some impact on Apple (which is probably why their going to 7000 series), so if I were Apple, I would be very cautious about selling a product whose design problem has already been fixed in the newer one. If for whatever reason Apple decides to keep the 6 Plus, shame on them, they'll be losing a lot of potential 6S buyers by selling a one-year old model. It's all about that revenue...
I expect the new line up to be (in order):
iPhone 6S Plus-16, 64, 128 GB
iPhone 6S-16, 64, 128 GB
iPhone 6-16 GB (yuck 16 GB...)
iPhone 5S-8 GB (even more yuck, 8 GB...........)
