The way the screen wraps down to the sides, this will be a more common occurrence on the 6.
All the people who like to roll around "naked" are just asking for trouble.

If you've dropped your previous phones 1000 times, then I think you are the problem.

On a more serious note...kitchen tile is hard. No big shocker that it cracked dropping it on that.

On a more sympathetic note...I do think that Apple's obsession with metal, glass, and ultra-thinness is a poor one for devices that are pulled in and out of pockets regularly. That they make them so smooth, glossy, and slippery just adds insult to injury. Plastic and rubber isn't glamourous, but it's probably a better set of material to use for devices that are used so frequently in a variety of conditions. Of course, we can always supplant the base materials by buying a bulky case, which I'd prefer not to do. I'd personally like to see them make a version of the latest phones out of materials that are less glamorous but a bit more shock-proof, even if it makes them a fraction thicker. They'd likely sell them for a bit cheaper than their fancy ultra-thin metal versions, so it would be a win-win for some of us.

On the point of cases, I think that Apple's iPhone 6 cases provide reasonable protection without unreasonable bulk. The silicone case in particular has gotten a lot of positive comments for being grippy but not sticky. Having an official Apple case available gives people the option of either having ultimate thinness, or having drop protection while retaining an elegant original manufacturer look.

It's all about impact. My buddy dropped his front facing and flat. Not even a scratch. Crop happens but gets case. Protect your investment.

When you drop your phone, it's the luck of the draw.
As some already said, the slight wrap around screen is possibly going to make this more common on drops.

I was getting out of my car once, had my iPhone 6 in my right hand and clipped my arm on the door as I was closing it. Phone dropped about three feet and bounced around a couple times on asphalt.
Time stopped. Everything was in slow motion.
I picked it up and not a mark on the phone.
Granted, I also use a case.

The 5s has a solid band. My old 5s band, that the old lady uses now, has dents. I cant say how a samsung would hold up... are they stronger than this? I have no idea.....

The 5S has similar isolation bands, as does the 4/4S
