Apple would have achieved the same pre-order sales figures if they had reduced the RAM to 500Mb, judging from the responses on this forum. The Apple fans wouldn't care and would believe that performance had been increased.

That's because whatever Apple says is fact, Duhh.. It will be fastest smartphone even with 256MB RAM if they said so.

Let's say both models have 1GB of RAM. Would the 6 perform better than the 6 Plus?

I think so. The 6+ will need more power and RAM to run the display. The 6+ would have optical image stabilisation, longer battery life, a bigger screen, and ever so slightly worse performance.

They should have put more ram in the iPhone 6. The battery savings are essentially nil.

This was an economic decision, period.

That said, the iPhone 5s was faster than any android phone, and the iPhone 5 is still just as fast as any flagship phone out there. Apple's iPhones, in the end, are super fast for a long time. And I'd rather have that end game than a specs-fest.

My nexus 7 with its snapdragon 600 is already noticeably slower than a phone with the snapdragon 800, whereas an iPhone 5 feels the same speed with the 5s.

But ram's primary purpose is not speed... is it?
We got CPU for that.
Ram's there so that the CPU can do its work smoothly - hence the analogy of someone doing work on the desk (CPU) and the desk (ram). The person may work fast, but if he has a small desk, he needs to shelf and open the book every time he switches between tasks.
Ram's for when you want to have many apps open at the same time, transition between apps etc.
Sure, iPhone may be "fast" but if every time you go do something else in another app you gotta boot up (at the fast speed) an app, I don't think it really helps.

Ram's not for spec-fest. My alternative to iPhone 6 Plus is Blackberry Z30. If specs are what mattered, there is no reason I would consider Z30 (in fact, I am told Z30, while less known, is surprisingly blazing fast - particularly its web browser. I am told it's the fastest of any web browser out there, all desktop and mobile web browsers together. Maybe there's something faster now, since it's been a while.). I agree specs are meaningless numbers, but in the case of iPhone ram, it's an actual usability and convenience factor. No amount of optimization will get around the fact that smaller ram is constricting. I am just that type of person who wants to keep a lot of things open in the background, uses my phone by switching between different tasks frequently. Optimization simply won't help me on this.

Still just 1gb of RAM?

Simply makes the decision to stick with the 5s that much easier ;)

Exactly. A bigger screen and more RAM were the things I most wanted from the i6. I would need both of those to upgrade.
To me the new iPhone is just a 5S with a bigger screen and a protruding camera. Apple Pay isn't a feature worth upgrading for by itself. Let's hope the 6S has more RAM, otherwise it will be two whole years with Android for me! :-o

The vast majority of iPhone users doesn't care about, or really even know what RAM does. As long as their iPhone runs smoothly they don't care, Apple knows this... which is why they care much more about the overall software experience than the hardware within the iPhone.

Of course a lot of the people here want more RAM though.

Well than that sucks. I definitely wanted a better screen and battery. I liked the OIS too. I finally accepted the size and felt comfortable after getting my case, but if it's laggy I would probably care about performance more.

Tough call. Luckily I have 14 days to decide. I was pretty confident it was going to be 2GB of RAM based off some recent articles from reputable sources.

I am a newbie, and I registered for the sole purpose of replying to this post, and I should say if "working fine" is your standard, really, you should be happy with iPhone 3GS. As far as I know, it worked fine, and it's still working fine. If I am going to far, let's leave it at 4s. Still works fine. Makes calls, gets emails, send text, run apps...

Why do we pay !@#$load of money for a new phone? We expect some improvements. Not the kind of improvements that will cost you gazillion. Adding 1GB of additional ram will increase the user experience by a huge margin, over and above just "working fine", at probably the least cost of any component you can upgrade.

I live in eastern North America, and including whatzit, altimeter? That thing that senses you altitude? That !@#$ doesn't excite me at all. Nowhere to go up or down around here (and yea, so what if it can tell which floor of a building you are in?). I never take pictures with my phone so none of the camera improvements, if any (because I haven't bothered to check), excite me.
As a longtime user of Apple (with no sentimental loyalty whatsoever - I've been liking Apple products for the very reason you cite - they just work, and work fine), I understand what you mean, but I don't think it's acceptable this time.
The only two things I was excited about iPhone 6 were bigger screen and larger ram (which I foolishly assumed - couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams that they would again stick with 1GB ram. This is a perversion), because like you said, Apple products otherwise "work fine".
This time, I was hoping a little bit more than that. You know, there's no "innovation" any more, which is fine by me, but if that's the case, you know, start making some improvements in basic functions and usability, you know? I am absolutely disgusted at Apple for this. Saving this improvement for the next model.

And I bet you my whole worth when the next iPhone model is revealed, Mr. Cook will make all the fanfare in the world about the new iPhone having 2GB of ram. As if they are granting us an immeasurable grace. Pffft, please.

And yeah, this is almost a dealbreaker for me. I had already ordered a case and screen protector for iPhone 6 Plus, but I am not sure anymore.

What an excellent post!! I’m more upset that 2GB is not standard vs 16GB on the base models. At least you can spend the $100 and get 64GB of storage; fine. But ram is not upgradable and you’re stuck with that amount forever. When the year old $159 Moto G has 1GB of ram but a $750 plus phone has the same amount something is very wrong with that picture.

They will increase the processor clock speed and I very much doubt that the experience will be laggy. You will however have less RAM to play with and will experience the tab/app reloading more often, if that bothers you.

Especially because in my own circumstance, I have a reason why I must get into a 3 year term. 3 years! It may be ok now, but I wouldn't believe it will be ok in 3 year's time.

My ipad has a much bigger display than the 6 or 6+ and 1gb of RAM doesn't hurt it in the least.

I think many are making way too big of a deal out of this.

If you go to the iPad section of the forum and search for "safari" or "ram" you will see countless threads regarding the issue of not enough RAM in the iPad causing issues and safari tab reloading.

While it might be fine for you, your experience is not the same for everyone.

Edit: not to mention the fact that 1gb of RAM might cause the new iPhone to get left for dead on updates earlier than if it had 2gb or at least cause lag/sluggishness with a new iOS update down the road.

That's the worst for me. Going back and forth between tabs with reloading. Do you really think the 6 will be better at doing that than the Plus?

Ughhhhhhh, 1st World problems at their finest.

But did get the 128GB Plus so that's a pretty penny for 1GB RAM.

Makes ISIL look like cupcakes!

So now, sunking101 & your cohorts, that the truth is out there that iPhone 6 models have 1GB of RAM, perhaps OCD people like you will stop going ballistic and stop hijacking tons of threads around here, making them unproductive to read.

Now lets get back to more important things, such as iOS 8 today and preparing to enjoy our new iPhone 6/+ coming Friday!!!

Calm down phillytim,

Why do you keep resurrecting RAM threads if you don't want them around?

Let it go...

Yeah, commenting in threads with RAM in the title is hijacking threads and filling them with RAM posts...

Exactly.

So now that this dead horse has been beaten into the afterlife, can you remain a productive part of these forums and stop wasting our time with RAM threads?

Well, the sooner you quit posting in them the sooner the threads will dissapear. Got it?

Damn, even the lowest-end Android One devices have 1GB of RAM.

So much for being premium.
