I thought maybe the whole screen would be shrunk and positioned in the left or right corner, kind of like letterboxing but on the top and side.

It's not a horrible idea and it's obviously going to be optional - don't like it don't use it - that's a tough concept for some people to grasp though.

Shrinking the whole screen would sort of defeat the purpose of the larger screen though. I'd prefer to keep a full display screen but have the on screen controls be within one-hand reach. Potentially have them transparent or zip out of the way when you aren't actually controlling anything.

iOS 8 beta has been out for months now and not 1 mention of this as a feature or even discovered in code.
Xcode 6 Beta have options for Resizable iPhone and iPad. So Apple could let developers add support for app resizing and voila you use a swipe gesture or whatever and you can resize the app however you want to handle custom one handed app sizes or whatever.

(i don't like it on Samsung phones but yeah, that would be an option atleast)

I have average sized hands and I can navigate my OnePlus One's 5.5" display without an issue one-handed.

Think about it, the keyboard takes up maybe 30% of screen real-estate starting form where your hand is closest, at the bottom. And It's not the width of the display that people are concerned about, it's the diagonal span of it, which makes having a one-handed feature for typing virtually useless.

Whats the only thing you need flash for: porn.

Whats the only think you need 1-handed use for: porn.

I for one welcome the onslaught of puns.

One-handed mode: decent idea.
Small enough phone to where it's not needed: much better idea.

I'd take a 3.5" iPhone 6 if they made it.

Says someone who undoubtedly:

1. Makes a lot of phone calls
2. Doesn't do much else

There are literally hundreds of different tasks that my iPhone is critical for on a daily or weekly basis....making phone calls the absolute least among them.

Swype or a Swpye-like keyboard is a great solution for one-handed keyboard typing.

Agree completely. One of the things I'm most excited for about iOS8 and vastly prefer on my Android device.

The width of the device is absolutely a factor. People bit** and moan about the thinner iPhone form factor but it makes a ton of sense to make the phone more usable one-handed.

Heck - Samsung shave mms off the width of the Note 4 (I believe it is a little over 2mm thinner width wise).

I agree that I won't need a "one-handed mode" for the 4.7" as I navigate my Nexus 5 just fine generally speaking. But it IS an issue as Apple isn't the only company concerned about it (Samsung has had the one-handed use mode for a while).

Ah, Cool. Thanks for the info.

Wasn't there a Samsung phone that had a 'one handed mode'? It shrunk the content of the screen a bit down to one corner so it was all within reach of a thumb.

I am certain Apple would do it in far more a classy and thought through way. Looking forward to this keynote!!

I'm curious to see what you believe is the major difference between how Apple and Google handle copying/pasting? For both you highlight the text and select an option.

I've used both. I find selecting text on the iphone to be easier. The bubble magnifier on the iphone works well.

'One-handed mode' that's interesting. I wonder if that means a full keyboard on half of 2/3's of the screen so your thumb and fingers can reach it.

I'll actually like this. One-handed use can come in handy when you're carrying something or on the move.

It's a gimmick, they are adding that feature just to backup their statement.

It would be curious to see how they pitch it. We've devised a software fix to a hardware problem we said we wouldn't do a few years ago...
On the other hand (geddit) having something implemented right will help those of us with tiny hands (can fit my 8yo gloves on). I can't use husbands htc one that well as it is...

lol...

No kidding... "On handed mode"

I fail to see this, but really. we all make big phones, then introduce stuff like this to try and make it useable with one hand ? Just to satisfy all, and even then it will have its trade-off because its a bigger phonel

Talk about making things complicated... buy it, or don't...

Whats the problem here ?

If u have a physical product that bigger than the last, but then try and introduce software to make it easier for small hands... it won't work well. because its physically large anyway.. You cannot do anything about it.

This is in comparison to the Note that doesn't have software for "smaller handed' users, because they know its a large phone, and sell it as such.

With iOS7, Apple added a new feature where you can swipe to right to go back to previous screen. eg - checking email - check a specific email - > swipe right will take you back to Inbox. This made the use of thumb in one-handed mode to reach top left of screen redundant.

With the aspect ratio of iPhone, the only issue of using it one-handed will be reaching top-left and I think they are going to provide swipe actions as alternatives for that. That still gives them the marketing byline for one-handed use.

Many are mentioning the shrinking or re-positioning of the keyboard, and that sounds right.
iOS7 has already begun some interface tweaks for one handed use. The swipe to go back and forth between Safari pages is new, and used to require pressing the back or forward arrow. There are probably many more instances of this.

It will be hard to reach the top corners with one hand on a large device, so this motion “trains” us to be ready for the large models.

Oh thank goodness!!!!!

Because that additonal .7" of screen size on the new iP6 makes will the phone waaaay too big. ;)
