Being waterproof (and dustproof) didn't help Sony sell more Xperia phones.
And it's water resistant. Waterproof is like those Casio G-shock watches, which you can wear and then go for a swim, maybe even do some shallow sea diving.
I think being water resistant DID help Sony sell more phones, in fact. not more phones than Apple, but I know at least three people here in the UK who were persuaded to buy an Xperia Z1 over a samsung S4.
By the way, G-Shocks are described as water resistant, not waterproof - to various depths. My Omega Planet Ocean is also water resistant, to 600m - far deeper than you can safely take it - but it's still water resistant.
The Apple watch is ALSO described as water resistant on Apple's own website - 'Apple Watch has a water-resistance rating of IPX7 under IEC standard 60529', which means up to 1m for up to 30 minutes. The iPhone 6+ is NOT described as water resistant in any way, and I think you'd better have spare funds if you want to risk submerging it to any depth at all for any time at all.
