I know. If you order by AU, when you show up in the store you can decide to pay in full instead.

As a prepaid customer your ATT info does not work though. He cannot buy a phone on the upgrade plan even if he wanted to. There is not workaround for prepaid customers. You either get the t-mobile phone or you wait in line on launch day.

The only other option is to camp out at the apple store and buy the ATT one there on launch day.

Thanks Matt. Not quite that serious. I may end up canceling the T-Mobile order and just waiting for ATT stocked in store. Though, I have two weeks to make that decision. Hopefully we will have more concrete details on CDMA and bands by then.

Sure there is. You go to the store. The cashier says "here's the AT&T iPhone you ordered, what's your AT&T info so we can set you up with Apple Upgrade". You say "I'm sorry, I won't be using Apple Upgrade I've decided to pay in full instead". Viola, you walk out 5 minutes later with an AT&T iPhone.

It does sound like the ATT model is the one to have since it will have all of the bands and CDMA. Personally, band 30 is not important to me (I am on cricket and they cap me at 8mbps). I would not benefit from stronger/faster LTE speeds.

FIWI.. I ordered a T Mobile contract free iPhone 6s on Friday night (technically saturday morning i guess). I just called Apple and asked what the model of the phone was and the gentleman told it was A1633. Maybe someone else could do the same to verify?

You cannot order it! That is the point. Tell me how to order an ATT phone without ATT service (prepaid they do not consider having service with ATT). In other words you cannot get passed the ATT account info screen at apple.

Did you try ordering through the Apple Upgrade page like I suggested? When I preordered on Saturday it didn't ask me anything about my carrier account, just what model of phone I wanted and which Apple Store I wanted to pick it up at.

I did in fact call and talk to two separate representatives and even did one online chat and they all said that I would not be able to leave the store without "activating the ATT phone on a supported ATT account." My $60 pre-paid ATT account does not qualify as "supported" even though I have a current working ATT SIM. This includes paid in full phones.

You can buy the AT&T version directly from Apple, you don't have to get directly from AT&T.

Why would you have to buy it in an AT&T store?

Where does it show what model they are sending you before you place order. I have never pre-ordered, so don't know. If I could know 100% I would get the A1633/34 (30 Band) with Apple Care for same or better monthly payment on Next, I would order from Apple. As it is, I may just show up on the 25th at my ATT Store. The person I know there and does their inventory said they will have them on 25th. Of course need to be early.

I did. And you would be the only person in the US who did not have to enter carrier info, unless you went with the t-mobile phone.

Every single other carrier (sprint, verizon, and ATT) make you enter your carrier info if ordering directly through apple.

That's not what the people I talked to said. They said you could switch to pay in full if you wanted and walk out the door with a new unlocked phone. If Apple is really requiring anything other than cash to buy a phone that's a serious regression in its business practices. I shouldn't need any kind of phone service to buy an iPhone from them.

Apple will let you walk out without activating it, ATT will not.

edit: sorry, not at launch. They will make you wait until a few months later.

Another thing I'm curious about, in the pre-order screen, my T-Mobile order shows up as "iPhone 6s 64GB Space Gray (GSM)" There is no mention of carrier. For you guys that ordered an ATT phone, what does it show up as on this page?

No, I first ordered a Verizon (before I knew the AT&T was the one to get) and then an AT&T. I went to the iPhone Upgrade page. Clicked on the "Reserve an iPhone" link. Select State, Store, Model, and Carrier. Click on the square for your color/model. Then it asked for my Apple ID and I confirmed the reservation. No question about carrier info was asked for, if it is now that's a change from Saturday.

oh gotcha. You may be out of luck. They require activation with the upgrade program. If you want to buy it outright they will most likely make you que up for the t-mobile phone unless they have stock.

I had to wait 2 months to get the verizon one without a contract for this reason.

The AT&T phone also shows "iPhone 6s 64GB Space Gray (GSM)". You can see the phone descriptions change while selecting different carriers in the Apple Store App before adding to cart.

The T-Mobile model is an A168x GSM variant (as opposed to the A163x GSM for AT&T). Verizon and Sprint both show iPhone 6s size color (CDMA).

once or twice haha, so again, it really effects a small group of people.
New York city is the most populated city in the US, and with commuters the population practically doubles during the day. From what I hear, other cities like San Francisco and Chicago face similar problems. It's not just a "small group of people"

The Galaxy S6 supports Band 30, so perhaps we could do some research if anyone has one and knows how to get to the mode that says what band it is operating on. Maybe someone has already posted this on Android forums.
Does the S6 Edge have it too? I got to try it and the speeds were MUCH faster. I compared then next to my 6 plus and it beat my plus every time.

It does support band 30, and it also supports carrier aggregation (like the 6s). Not sure which is leading to your better speeds
