If you finance through carrier, it will be locked until it is paid off.

If you purchase full price from Apple, it will be unlocked.

If you use the Apple Upgrade Program, you can finance the phone and it will be unlocked.
I will go with option # 3

I was going to take a subisidized upgrade from somebodys account and they would have a 2 year contract.

I know that every Verizion Iphone comes unlocked so I guess things are different with ATT

Does it make any difference if I order it directly from Apple ? I am seeing that some people claim that it does
Yes it does. Full priced or AUP iPhones from Apple are unlocked. The only exception last year was Sprint, but I believe even that has changed. Phones sold by carriers, except for Verizon, are usually locked.

I've decided to order the AT&T model, full price 6S+ 128 GB SG. Though I have to wait 3-4 weeks, I'm not that in a rush and I'll just wait patiently. I have it set to deliver to my work place so I'm not concerned. While I do have a reservation for pick up for the T-Mobile model, looks like I'll just pass that one up so someone who comes in line on launch day will get it.

Even though Band 30 isn't important to me yet but since I'm with AT&T, I might as well get the AT&T Model this time.

I'd just show up at your reservation time and see if they'll give you an AT&T model.

well I ordered no contract T-mobile 6s 64gb from Apple (as it is the easiest) and my take is until I actually see the model number from the package or have some others actually verify with theirs, however slim likely it is, it could still be A1633.

If anybody here has learned anything -past a few days or a couple of years-, it is that nothing is official until 25th. Even Apple's site can't be trusted 100% all the time.

Anyway if t mobile from Apple turns out to be A1688 (probably), I can always return that and order the same one from AT&T website and unlike A6+, I can probably get it within a week. The difference is $15 (AT&T new account activation fee) to get this band 30, though, so still not 100% decided on this.

Do T mobile, Verizon, and Sprint also charge a new customer fee to open an account with them? I vaguely remember Verizon also charging.

Yea, I might consider doing that too but to be honest I think chances are low wouldn't it? But of course it doesn't hurt to try. Since mines still in processing item (probably won't be for a while), you think I can cancel the order on the day of the launch and if I can get the AT&T model, then I can quickly cancel the item on the apple store. Since technically I ordered it at full price.

And I do know that they don't charge your card until they ship it out.

I know I stood in line for the 6Plus but this time around I don't feel like standing in line, even though I would be standing in the reservation line but I'll have to see.

I am noticing how OP quoted a PCmag article that the AT&T and Sprint model will not be sold as unlocked

I can't speak for the Sprint models but for AT&T- the policy at the Apple Store is that, if full price is paid, it is automatically unlocked out of the box

The genius reps (whatever you call them) probably already know this, but notoriously play dumb about it until an official unlocked model is sold

I do understand that this year, an official unlocked model is selling from day 1, but even so, we don't know how the apple reps will act. Some are knowledgable, and some just don't know what's going on.

Bottom line, if you want to play it safe and you want the AT&T version, get it, and request to sell it as "device only". Nothing at the Apple Store has changed, and I highly doubt that this will not work for the 6s launch.

Apple's unlock policies are standardized across the board, therefore I'm not worried about a thing.

I'm going to try this with Apple Upgrade, since it's considered to be "pay in full" and the phones are unlocked.

"Hi, I'd like to buy this AT&T iPhone I reserved device only" "How would you like to pay for it?" "Apple Upgrade."

Are you referring to the SIM-free model?

Just did a bestbuy preorder for a 64gb 6s+ at&t. Im going to keep my simfree reservation at Apple. The main issue now is that bestbuy doesnt sell their phones unlocked even if paid full, plus they charge 50 dollars more which im sure I can fix with the price match. How long does it take at&t to unlock phones through their system?

Not sure if anyone will have a good answer to this but I have to wonder... What if I use a friend or family members ATT account to verify eligibility to order an full-price ATT 6S so that I can use it with a pre-paid plan (or any other carrier for that matter)? Will their accounts be affected in any way? If I pay in full then it shouldn't affect their upgrade status on anything else right?

Thanks. I wonder why they label them under different carriers and won't allow you to order a particular carrier, outside of T-Mobile, for even a full-price phone.
The labeling is because they ship with SIM cards. Don't know why they care whether or not you belong to a carrier though

This stinks and have my :apple:Store appointment set for a T-Mobile. I'm a 15 year AT&T wireless customer. Decided to try T-Mobile manly for music streaming. Probably a 50-50 chance of switching back to AT&T. Now I will not have band 30. I wonder if there is a way to request a A1633 (fat chance) or change my choice to AT&T (another fat chance). I could then switch to T-Mobile in a moth or 2.

Why is Apple going through the production/logistics trouble to make two iPhones models for the US?

So I think I found the buy AT&T model outright work around. I pre-ordered a 6S this morning by selecting pay in full and getting the lowest $45 dollar a month share plan on the AT&T website. When the phone gets here I'll just put my current pre-paid AT&T Sim in it and fire it up never activating the new postpaid account. Worst case it auto activates and I have 14 days to call and cancel for a refund. So I keep my $55 dollar a month 4GB of data AT&T pre-paid line while still getting a pre ordered iPhone 6S. By the way, order date was this morning and I already have a preparing to ship status on a 64GB space gray with a Thursday expected ship date.

How can how get a plan on the AT&T website without activating it? Also, I assume you'd still be out the up to $45 activation fee even if they refund the monthly when you cancel.

Well there are two schools of thought going around. Some say when they have gotten a new iPhone in the past they turn it on and it auto activates with the SIM it came with. Others say they had to actually call and have it switches from their old phone. Either way I can call and cancel within 14 days. To get the $15 (not sure where you got $45) activation fee back you must cancel within 3 days of activation. Of course if I can cancel before the account goes active I don't pay a dime. And no, the post paid account is not active yet. They do not bill you for a plan when you, to them, don't have a phone.

I've been trying t-mobile since May for the whole summer, I have it mostly for international travel. T-mo sucks compare to Att in the USA, so I keep my Att for domestic usage. Even in MA I got to no service area, Edge, not usable 4G all the time. Here is t-mo native map without Att and other partners roaming

https://maps.eng.t-mobile.com/pcc.html?map=mvno-noroam-34l

I probably switch to t-mo, spend a lot of time traveling and I have an unlimited Att iPad for backup, but if you want to use it in the USA and esp. you are not in LTE 12 area . You probably come back.

I wish I'm wrong.

With Apple you have 14 days from you get the phone. With Att 14 days since they shipped the phone + 35 dollars restocking fee. You return it they never charge you 15-45 dollars. If they charge, give them a call.

I will not be returning the phone, I paid full price for it. I want the band 30 ATT phone just not a post-paid. There were several people on here asking how to get the phone for use with pre-paid or some other service. I'm just giving others an option, that one has brought up, to get the phone without service. They will ship the phone on Thursday and I will receive it Friday. I will still be well within my 14 and 3 day window.

The webpage for AT&T Mobile Share says the activation fee can be up to $45. So you're saying you can sign up for a plan online and give Apple that account number when you show up to pick up the phone, but that plan won't be active and billed until somebody, presumably Apple itself, turns it on?

Well I have the billing statement already which you accept before you continue the process and it is indeed $15. Of course if you could have easily created a cart yourself to see. Also to note is that the only thing they consider "Due Today" on the bill is the phone cost, none of the fees or monthly charges.

I was planning to use Apple Upgrade to finance the phone, but I don't actually want the required AT&T service since I already have a good prepaid plan. Since the phone is supposed to be unlocked it looks like the thing to do is sign up with a 300MB Mobile Share plan when I pick up the phone and then cancel it the same day to minimize prorated charges.
