I don't care much about speed, but I absolutely care deeply about reliability. My 6 Plus is maddeningly unreliable. The tiniest bit of skin oil on the Touch ID sensor or finger and it doesn't work. The same happens to my wife's 6 and our son's 5s. And I'm a clean freak -- no dirty french-fry-and-salt-laden fingers here.

The question is will it work better with sweaty hands? Currently, I have a iPhone 6 and either I have a defective touch ID or it just doesn't work with my hands 70% of the time (more likely). Hopefully, there is going to be a better solution going forward as touch id is expected to be used more and more. When I see it working like this for "normal" people, I feel incredibly envious.

I found Touch ID so unreliable on the 6+ that I stopped using it after a couple weeks. And I keep my phone very clean. It would work great for about a day after setting up the fingerprints, but then would become unreliable until I deleted and re scanned my fingers.
When it did work, it was very fast, almost instant actually, but deteriorated quickly.
I'm more interested to know if they've made it more reliable, so I don't have to re-enter my prints every couple days.

I experienced all these issues on my first iPhone 6. Got it replaced, and never had a problem with Touch ID after that. Now on the 6s Plus, it's practically perfect.

So if you're not considering upgrading to a 6s/Plus, getting your phone replaced might do the trick.

I mean there HAS to be something people like you do differently than others. I've never had Touch ID issues with my 5s or 6, and I rarely clean the home button. It boggles my mind when I hear of ppl having issues with it like this.

I'm hoping so! Though I'm not going to hold my breath. I may be pleasantly surprised come next year!

But... If they DID implement Touch ID into the screen.. how would you unlock your phone? Hit the sleep/wake button, then Touch ID to unlock? Or would the screen wake up just from sensing a touch? If the latter, wouldn't the screen potentially wake up from a lot of unintentional touches?

A hard press with 3D Touch would do it. The phone could constantly "glow" a home button shaped icon while it is at rest, using very little power.

its a problem if its too slow. Its a problem if its too fast.. are we ever going to stop complaining?

1. use the power button if you just want to see the wallpaper, time glance etc.
2. use the tip of you thumb/nail to press the home key instead of the entire thumb which will unlock it instead.
3. if neither of those two work for you, dont use touch ID and your phone wont unlock at all.

Touch ID is insanely fast. If youngsters tap home button fast and remove finger it already registers to unlock. No need to hold finger there for a moment anymore.

What about a peek or pop touch, we have 3D Touch now.

It's just a matter of habits... Now we are accustomed to press and keep a gentle pressure on the home button to wake up and unlock the iPhone.
With the new one it takes just a little tap on it....

First world problem...

That's actually a really good idea. Don't know why it didn't cross my mind...

Force Touch (3D Touch, whatever) the home screen to wake up and simultaneously unlock with built-in Touch ID. Brilliant. I'd have to say that a constantly glowing home icon would almost certainly be a no-go, even if it used very little power. Still, it would be interesting to see if Apple indicates a home "button" in any way assuming this will happen.

Too fast!! Just touching the home button unlocks my 6s plus automatically.
And the problem is ?
It's supposed to do exactly that....

I think it's related to your fingers/skin or you have a faulty unit.
In my case touchId is absolutely reliable since iPhone 5S, even with dirt on fingers or home button (to some extent).
This one is so funny! Firstly, when was the last time geeks complained about something that is too fast? Isn't faster the better? Secondly, this could all be quite sinister that user can no longer press the home button to check the time. Apple really wants us to use AppleWatch to check time. It's more energy efficient too!
This forum is just incredible. People here has to complain about something.

Same for me.
I can't make a statistic, but it would be something like 95% of reliability since the beginning (iPhone 5S). Maybe even more with iPhone 6...
Why you think they call this macomplainers.com
Yep. This forum is incredible....

Is anyone noticing on their 6s Plus when unlocking the phone, the home screen freezes for a second or 2 and the status bar up the top disappears and then reappears? At one point when i unlocked, as the icons went to fade in, the screen froze for like a few seconds! I'm so hoping this is a software bug and not the phone :(

Not really that surprising. I think some percentage of iPhone 6 (and earlier) TouchIDs shipped with sensors that don't do so well with finger grease/oil. My phone has the same problem, TouchID is erratic at best, but my iPad doesn't have the problem at all, never misses - same oily fingers, just a better sensor. :)

Why do we have so many "Dumb" people here? :(

Or course something can be too fast, just in the same way it can be too slow.
We seem to have people here who cannot grasp this.

If the Apple watch showed you the time and turned the screen off after 1 second, it would be too fast, and would need to be slowed down a bit.
The mouse speed in Windows and OSX has adjusters so that you can set things between slow and fast depending on your preference.

Why do we have so many numb nuts who don't understand that a feature that a human being has to interact with has to be set at a speed that's most comfortable for humans to use.
Too fast can be just as bad as too slow.

In an ideal world, a feature like TouchID would work instantly, and then you would have a small slider under settings to adjust how fast it reacted, then each user, old people and young children etc, could set a response speed that felt most comfortable to them.

It's not, as they say "Rocket Science" folks.

its too fast, i have to use a wrong finger now just so i can quick glance at my notification without unlocking it.. #firstworldproblems

The 6S Touch ID is so fast I can't get to my lock screen. If I want to get to my lock screen I use a different finger or use the sleep wake button. Not complaining though, I love the speed.

How would this affect Apple Pay? One of the best things about iOS 9 is the super-quick access to your main Apple Pay card by double clicking the home button when on the lock screen. Occasionally, I've found even the iPhone 6's sensor getting in the way and unlocking my phone before I can do the second button click. Is this a problem on the 6s (Plus)?

Lol.
Ever thought that maybe there might be a software glitch, or just a faulty Touch ID sensor on their device?
Heck even I had trouble after upgrading to iOS 8.4 and 8.4.1 and luckily it got fixed and is working properly on iOS 9. When mine was down, I searched online and a couple of other posters had the same problem.
Glad that you've never had problem with your devices, but I hope you don't stress your fragile mind too much over it.
