My iPhone 6S has shut down twice since I updated it to iOS 10. First time it shut down with 48% charge left and this morning it shut down with 28% charge left. Never had this issue until I updated to iOS 10, it sucks. I really don't want a new iPhone, mine is in mint condition and I really won't accept a refurb, I've not dropped the phone and baby it, so this is not happening due to anything I've done.

Although mine has not shutdown since a set up as new after DFU restore I have booked an appointment at an Apple Store as I was just online with Apple support and a over the air diagnostic showed there is a battery fault. The support guy said it can be replaced for free under UK consumer law if there is a fault. Next appointment is next Saturday though. I'm running 10.2 beta for the record and installed the whole file via iTunes as previously mentioned.

how do you get applecare to log in remotely?

You just tell them about battery problems and they most likely are going to do it, they will need to have your device Serial Number and will need to have you approve the test by going to Settings -> Privacy -> Diagnostics. If you go to the Genius Bar they also run tests remotely over Wi-Fi.

By the way, I have a question to people who say they have done the DFU restore. Was it a true DFU mode where the iPhone screen was completely blank? Or the iTunes restore where it said “Connect to iTunes to restore” or something to that effect?

I am trying the DFU now, if it doesn’t help I will go to the Store on Tuesday or Wednesday and try to use my out of warranty exception to swap or send for repairs.

Experienced this for the first time on my 64GB 6S. 48%. iOS 10.1.1. I was just on the Facebook app and the screen went blank and it did exactly the same as everyone else has already mentioned.

It's ok now but can't risk it happening again. Will watch this thread...

my phone last night did its usual turn off dance and when i went to plug it in it never turned back on. let it charge all night and it still will not turn on, it sees that power has been applied to the phone by popping up the battery screen without the cord on the bottom but wont turn on at all now.

For the last couple of days my iPhone 6s has been shutting off at fairly high percentages (14% yesterday, 18% today). When I try to turn it back on, sometimes it will give me the low battery symbol, but other times it will turn back on. However, even if it does, it shuts off again very quickly.

Even before this started happening, I suspected something might be wrong with the battery because I would only average about 6 hours of battery life with normal usage, while a lot of people on this forum seem to be getting 7-8 hours. Additionally, I've had some weird problems with charging. Sometimes my phone would seem to be charging very slowly, so I would reset the phone and when it turned back on, it would be at a higher percentage than before (around 10% more). There doesn't seem to be any major problem with the discharging rate though.

Just a bit of background in case it might be relevant: When I first got my 6s, I restored from a backup of my old iPhone, but was encountering a bug with Siri so I restored as new. Even with this restore, like I mentioned before, my battery life has been somewhat suspect. Do you guys think that I have a problem with the battery, or should I just restore as new again? I'm somewhat reluctant because I have some saved game data that I don't want to lose, but if this is just a firmware glitch, I'll have to do it.
Exact same problem here. Phone was shutting down at 18%. Tried restoring, adding apps back one by one. Didn't matter. Apple replaced the phone. A day later, same thing. This time I was able to video what was happening. Brought the new phone back, showed the video, and they gave me another new one. This third one is perfect. No issues. All three phones were 128 GB. All three were running 9.2.1. The first two had Samsung A9 chips. The third one has a TSMC A9 chip. I don't know if that mattered.

It's most likely not a battery problem but a charge problem. Your phone for some reason will not hold charge correctly whether it be to water damage or some unknown reason.

You need to bring up that if you go to an Apple store because the workers there are so incompetent that they just assume it's the battery or nothing else (I had this same problem with my 5s and had to go to apple stores at least 5 times, trying to get them to try something else out until finally a qualified woman helped me figure it out)

I contacted Apple Support today and the guy ran a diagnostics test on my phone - hardware is fine, apparently. I was told to reset the phone's settings to see if that might help. I really hope it does.

Keep me posted. I experienced a shut down today at 35% when using the camera.

Didn't you mention performing a DFU restore? It surely resets all settings, too. And besides, I have tried that prior to going to Apple Store and it did nothing.

I kinda agree, but it's too late for me, I was thinking of getting a 7 Plus and this 'took me over the edge'. Got the 7 Plus today and it is a...maz...ing!

Thanks. Didn't realise. I had one the other night at 50% and one before at about 20%. Haven't had one since. Still thinking it's software though.

I wish that was true. My 6S is in mint condition and I'd hate to replace it for a refurb if it comes to that. What irks me is that there's no word from Apple. If it is a software issue I'd be okay to wait for a fix...

I'm experiencing this issue all of a sudden too. Each iOS 10.x Update made it worse. I had my phone shut off at around 40-50% multiple times.

Has anyone tried if this problem arises when using low-power mode after charging to 100% and continuing using low-power mode?
Reason: After some googling i read that some users cured it by disabling "background activites" of certain Apps. Some claimed e.g. WhatsApp to be a problematic App concerning this problem.

Both the 6s we have in the house with 10.1.1 are randomly turning off with 10-20% battery life. Try to reboot and it goes to screen showing that it needs to be connected to power source. Connect to power source and about 2-3 minutes later it shows the battery at 15% already....

for you guys who are having these kinds of problems, do the phones usually die when you are outdoors?

i have very similar issues with my 6s and i've noticed that the phone turning off typically happens when the phone is exposed to the cold outside for an extended period of time. i know the 6s has a recommended operating range of above 32 degrees, but i have had this issue even when the temperature is around 40 degrees.

what i'm noticing is that once the phone is exposed to the cold for around 10-15 minutes, the phone will sometimes die out of nowhere (I've seen with battery life anywhere from 10% to 50%) and when i try to turn it on, it shows the battery as empty. but...as soon as i plug the phone back in, the battery will show up with percentage that the battery died at. and the issue is very frequent especially during the winter. any given week, i'd say the phone will die prematurely 3 times usually when i'm outside going from work. i have had iPhones since iPhone 3G and i've never had batteries this sensitive to cold.

Gonna check out the Genius Bar tomorrow and see what they can do.
THIS HAPPENS TO ME TOO! But my phone is out of warranty so I'm just bringing a charger

It's a software issue, not hardware. Anyone that gets a diagnostic run and it shows an issue, you have a legitimate battery issue. It's not the same as people who have no battery issues but still have the problem.

Call in, get a Senior Advisor, have them submit an escalation.

I agree, software issue. Too much of a coincidence for 2 phones in my house to just start having an issue after updating to 10.1.1

Iphone 7 user here. I am currently using 10.1.1.

My phone is switching off at 15%! I contacted Apple support and they told me to reset but to no avail. The same issue is still happening.

They said my hardware is fine and its most likely a software related issue after running diagnostics.

However its worrying me as I seem to be the only iphone 7 user here experiencing this!

You are right, in my experience having the Low Power mode on prevents shutdowns, and also shutdowns seem to be triggered by battery intensive tasks. Not sure if it's a device manufacturing defect or a software issue. But surely it's not supposed to happen.

Can confirm that the DFU restore does not help.

As I've noted above the shutdown is usually triggered by running an intensive task at (relatively) low battery. I used Podcasts refresh to test, for about a day after restoring I experienced no shutdowns, and then it came back at about 15%.

I have an launch day iPhone 6 that started experiencing the issues described here since updating to IOS 10. Battery will only charge to about 80% overnight and will cut off around 10-30%. I can be at 65% and take an 8 minute video and then be at 30%. I've attempted to recalibrate battery by letting it drain all the way (stayed at 1% for a long time) and then recharging it to no avail. My phone is just a month and change out of AppleCare warranty so it seems like this repair is on me. I'm sure after 2 years of use the battery may have lost some of its charge and I'm ok with that. I'm just a bit bothered that battery performance was possibly compromised with IOS 10. Hopefully I can find a solution.

Thanks.
