I've been having the same issue as everybody else on my iPhone 6.

The problem of the phone shutting down from 20 to 45% started after updating to iOS 10

I have a smart battery case and I've noticed that when I put the case on the iPhone 6 at around 20% the battery on the phone immediately jumps to 40 or 50%

My conclusion is that this problem is a software issue & since it's mainly affecting iPhone 6 and 6s owners I don't think Apple are motivated to fix the problem. I'm sure they would be happier if people upgrade to the 7

<sigh> The battery has a bad cell. This is not rocket science, it should be replaced.
That's why I hate phones with non removable batteries. I know this will happen to my iPhone too.

My 6s has the exact same problem, even before IOS 10. I think it is caused by cold weather, as it happened a lot while traveling around the south island of nz in the middle of winter

Batteries can fail in different ways. Usually people think of phones going from 100 to 0 faster than normal. However there's a different kind of battery failure that occurs when the cells, even though technically charged, become worn and unable to deliver the proper voltage to power the device. When this happens the device will abruptly power off. The solution is to have the battery replaced.

Same problems with 2 iPhones 6s bought in October 2015. Failure may have started together with iOS 10, but unsure.
One thing that is sure is that it's getting worse, both the frequency as the battery level at which this occurs.
Sidenote: don't have the problem with iPad Pro

Solution to what? If you read this topic you'll see that Apple Support / Apple Genius on several ocassions opined that battery replacement would not help with this particular problem.

They are wrong.
From what I can see you are wrong. I talked to an Apple Genius, he said he has seen similar issue before. He didn't know what that was but said battery replacement was known to either help or not with no way of telling in advance, therefore he did not recommend it.

I'm totally agree with you two guys but I'm afraid Apple am not gonna say anything about that and if it was a software problem they had already done so the only way is to go there to get a replacement.

Ruja, how did your Apple Store visit go, did you get a replacement?

Hi unclemax,

I didn't go at the end but before you thinking about I'm a bit stupid guy, I tell you my "why".

First of all, I still have a whole year of warranty. On the other hand, I never wanted to travel almost 300 kms to get the closest store... and actually I didn't want a replacement but a reparation but apparently that's unlikely to obtain there. But the main reason I did it is because in one week the phone behaves like nothing weird happen. The used time is around 7 hours and it turns off in 1% so I've decided to wait and observe it carefully.

Had it happen to me again today at a new high of 53%.

I'm starting to think it's caused by the cold, as it switched off while I was outside and then when I went inside it was fine.

Hi everyone!
Did anyone try to switch iPhone 6/6S/7 to "Low power mode" after a full charge and check if the issue happens when the battery drains to 10-20-50%?
I did several charge-discharge cycles on "Low power mode" and everything seems to work fine. I plan to charge iPhone again and disable "Low power mode" to check if the issue still present.

I've not tried that although during last week my issue hasn't appeared again. But if it would appear the problem again, I'd try it undoubtedly.

This is why I refuse to upgrade to a full step iOS release on older phones.

Having the 'luxury' of having 2 iPhones 6s with this problem, I can compare.
Seems like the problems occurred after installing 10.1.
Mid October someone took one the phones (with ios 10) on a hicking trip and despite the 'harsh' conditions, he didn't experience any problem. But now he experiences the problem multiple times per week.
Will try to downgrade to ios 10 and see how it goes

Yeah, I see your point somewhat. It definitely doesn't help that Apple would not admit to the problem so you have to make a fuss to get something done. I don't want to be negative but if you're out of Apple 1yr warranty they might still try to claim that they cannot find an issue with your phone, that they need to send your phone for testing and then find nothing, etc.

For what it's worth, I found some early discussions of the exact same problem:

https://m.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/51hhrf/iphone_6s_shutting_down_at_4050_percent/?compact=true

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30937261-iPhone-Battery-dies-with-30-to-go

The fact that there's still no software fix and no official support info makes me quite pessimistic

Same exact issue here and its the reason I bought an Anker battery case.

If my phone dies at 20%, I can turn on the Anker case for a couple minutes and the phone will power back up and be at 20%+!

FWIW I did open up a case with Apple and after running diagnostics over the phone, they said the battery is in perfect health condition and its nothing to be worried about?

That's the bloody thing! Apparently guys that work at Apple Store know about this problem but are hush-hush about it unless confronted. And if you look through this topic you'll see some people relaying their Chat support agents saying that "Apple engineers are aware of this problem and are working hard to solve it! It's going to be fixed with a software update" (implying you should wait for the next update, then the next one, etc). Leaves pretty nasty impression.

My iPhone has shut down several times since fresh install after DFU restore. Got an appointment for Saturday at Genius Bar so hopefully I'll get a replacement or battery replacement. (But I don't think it's a battery issue).

Yeah you're right. I'm thinking to sell it and to buy a cheap android and to wait till next iPhone generation.
