Been reading this forum for DAYS and finally decided to join since I'm also going nuts !
Preordered IPhone 7 plus matte black 128 gb 9/9 at 3:01:00 a.m EST and still no movement It has said preparing to ship since I ordered it .. I see everybody else shippings coming up and I'm extra blah lol my pending charge has disappeared and nothing has changed .. I wasn't bothered by the 9/23-9/30 delivery date till I started seeing people getting theirs shipped now I'm anxious !

Furthermore, how long has Apple and the carriers -- certainly AT&T -- been doing this? If next year is the 10th anniversary for the iPhone, that's ten years. While I love Apple devices and I really like AT&T's ordering process, you'd think that the actual DevOps behind the sites would get a process down by now?

Personally, I don't understand why AT&T, Apple and/or whomever don't use Amazon Web Services (AWS) or similar scaling architecture to scale up as the traffic gets crazier, then scale back down as the traffic simmers down. That's the whole point of renting space at data centers, and if it's not Amazon, I know there are other vendors that provide rentable machines/capacity on their data centers.

I have never understood why that doesn't happen. Then again, maybe it's not a site issue, per se; it could be a billing systems issue or some such. In telecom, it's called "busy hour," the theory that states that you should provision how much capacity you need to reasonably handle the busiest time of your business -- without a meltdown.
Unfortunately not every single piece of infrastructure involved is under their total control. For all we know, Comcast could freak out when it sees extreme spikes in identical activity and slows down requests for inspection.

Same boat, same model. I keep on pressing the button in the email they sent to check my ship status. Right now I have about 100 tabs open in chrome on my phone, and they're all that shipping page from att. Lol

My 7 black went from Ft Worth to Indianapolis. I live in Nashville, not close. Delivery Friday went from by 3pm, to by 8pm. Not complaining, I may be able to stay at work all day tomorrow...

I wonder how often this system updates order statuses. Is it immediate or hourly etc.

This seems to be the case for pretty much everyone with that phone.

I agree.
I went through apple originally.

Was given an "unable to contact provider" message.
Received an email he next day with instructions on continuing the process.

Dang, never got out of "processing items". If I get it mid-next week I'll be good.

Odered ATT iphone plus 128gb Black (matt) via apple Sept. 9th (around 7:45 am CST). Status has not changed from "processing items". 04 Oct - 10 Oct. range. No CC action either.

Over in the Jet Black thread it appears lots of Apple.com order for Jet Black Plus are starting to change to preparing for shipment. So we know some are indeed getting delivered tomorrow.
