I think I've lost hope on my phone. I think everyone who was supposed to get it, did. Crazy since my preorder time was 2:47am EST.
You know, those early order times always had my suspicions up. I got in at 2:55am EST and finished my order at 2:58am. Received a 9/23-9/30 window. Haven't heard a word in 5 days. I've seen many others who "got in early" who have also received nothing from ATT since Friday Morning last. They shouldn't have opened early like that. Something doesn't seem right about this.

Probably doesn't mean anything, but I've gotten 5 identical texts from AT&T about my new order being on its way. Not the same as the shipping text I got for one of my orders.
Same for me. It stopped after 3 or 4 times. Plus, the link they sent in the message doesn't even work lol.
Right? The link they sent just says "Page not found." I've gotten six messages in the last two hours. I texted #STOP to see if that works.

I'm getting an automated message from AT&T every 20 minutes telling me that my phone is on the way. Does anyone know how to stop it?
A problem many of us wish we had.

Finally got tracking info from FedEx. Scheduled delivery for the 16th. Currently in FT Worth, TX.

Ordered the 128+ matte black on 9/9 at 2:37am ET.
Did you get the number for ATT after telling you it shipped or some other way?

Just went into my ATT store that im having my phone (7+ matte black 128g) shipped to to see what the chances are of my phone arriving instore tomorrow. Spoke with someone, not sure of his position but the way the other associates kinda stiffened up when he walked in lead me to believe he was someone who knew what he was talking about and with a little bit of authority. He told me the chances are as close to 0% as you can get with out flat out saying no chance. He went on to say (not sure if I can say this, since he got a little quite when he said this next part) that they are only getting 4 phones in tomorrow. Didn't specify whether they were +'s or regulars but assured me that none of them would be Matte or Piano black. With my shipping date of 9/23-9/30 he seemed more than comfortable telling me that I would get my phone next week. He also went on to say that the Jet Black phones have been pushed back to November (assuming he meant for those not already preordered)

This was just my experience at my store. Other stores could be different but I feel a bit more comfortable knowing that I can stop worrying about something that wont happen tomorrow. Of course they could also get an individual shipment in with my name on it but odds are slim.
Add to this the recent news reports that all Jet Blacks and all 7 Pluses are sold out, and that sounds about right.

In other words, don't cancel unless you're actually in a store where the associate has your actual phone, in hand, to upgrade/add to your account.

I also commented on the person who is on a "throw-away" account (and allegedly an AT&T store manager) -- and they agreed with my further assessment -- that shipments come in to each store from a logistics carrier (e.g.: FedEx, UPS, etc.) without that store knowing how many or what type of any given device they're going to receive.

So umm.. this first come first serve is crap right: because how far can you be down the first come first serve list at 12:03am on pre-order night?

Gawd, I'd hate to be the AT&T store rep who pulled the short straw and has to answer phones today. Must be a nightmare.

I've ordered a new phone on launch day since the iPhone 4. It's always like this, or pretty much like this. They never have enough phones, the website is always overwhelmed, order status is always wonky, and people are always mad. It's just how it is. The iPhone is hugely popular and they can only make so many at once. They also can't box them up too far ahead of time until the OS is done and can be loaded (which is like a week before release date).

I've learned to let go of the idea that I must have my new phone on launch day. Heck, this year AT&T wouldn't even accept my order until 2 am PST (probably because our account has a FAN discount linked to my wife's employer). I'm quoted 2nd half of October for shipping. I have no idea whether it will ship early, on time, or late. Probably late, but manufacturing might get caught up.

I'd love to have my phone tomorrow, but my later ship date is almost a relief because I know I'm not getting it tomorrow so I have no reason to obsess about it.
Furthermore, how long has Apple and the carriers -- certainly AT&T -- been doing this? If next year is the 10th anniversary for the iPhone, that's ten years. While I love Apple devices and I really like AT&T's ordering process, you'd think that the actual DevOps behind the sites would get a process down by now?

Personally, I don't understand why AT&T, Apple and/or whomever don't use Amazon Web Services (AWS) or similar scaling architecture to scale up as the traffic gets crazier, then scale back down as the traffic simmers down. That's the whole point of renting space at data centers, and if it's not Amazon, I know there are other vendors that provide rentable machines/capacity on their data centers.

I have never understood why that doesn't happen. Then again, maybe it's not a site issue, per se; it could be a billing systems issue or some such. In telecom, it's called "busy hour," the theory that states that you should provision how much capacity you need to reasonably handle the busiest time of your business -- without a meltdown.
