My phone still looks as perfect as it did on the day the box was first opened. It was made during week 37 & I've had it since September.

Thats not a flaw, its a feature! Once you've grown tired of black, you can turn your phone silver! :D

That's awful although it's not suppose to do that considering it's anodized. But from the pictures it looks more like layer of paint coat. Most of the paint chipping is concentrated around the top or bottom area which would lead me to believe that perhaps the top and bottom part have been treated differently during the manufacturing process. Would be interesting to see if this happens to the mid section aswell.

Dang. Didn't the black iPhone 5 have a similar problem with "chipping" on the chamfered edges, too? Something ain't right

What will this look like if you scratch away all the coating?

It looks like bare aluminium (like a screw/nail or a connecting piece of Ikea furniture). I'm not sure it would be a good look but it would certainly be distinctive!

I seem to recall my iPhone 5 chipping into the metal (like it was too soft) rather than the coating peeling off.

Seems like the coating either didn't bind to the metal correctly or it is just poor paint job. I'll be taking it to the Apple Store on Monday. Will be interesting to see what they say. I believe it's a manufacturing fault and they should offer a replacement on a normal retail basis but I also have Apple Care if that gives them more of an incentive (not that it covers cosmetic damage but may help). I can literally peel it off using my nail (not that I'm trying but I may do this in the store as clearly not right).

Will it turn black again in the future, like pass the parcel!?! :)

This has only happened within the last few days on my Matte Black iPhone 7 Plus and it's bugging the life out of me as I'm so careful with all my devices.

That is both weird and disappointing. Should not happen.
[doublepost=1487539145][/doublepost]Would this also happen with the gold?

I've got a 'week F' (I'm not going to enter my ser# into that site though;)
Also in an Apple black leather case. 256, nine days after available was when I received mine, no chips, no scratches or blemishes on mine.
I'm with others and honestly, first I'd heard of it. Someone mentioned 'media's reporting...' and I've certainly not read or heard about anything in any real 'media'/respected sites ...but I don't get to the end of the Internet each day either ;)
Take it back, show em and see what they'll do for ya.

The surface underneath does not appear to be the same as the normal silver finish.

Apple replaced my black matte phone on Monday. They seemed surprised and several members of the team looked at the device. When I showed how easily you could take the coating off, one of the team tried and got black paint/coating under their nail!

Man I was torn between getting jet black and matte black. I thought it would be hard to deal with the scratches of jet black, but got it anyways. I'm sorry for the people dealing with this on the matte black, but I'm happy I'm not dealing with it.
Unfortunately, I've seen this shared here on the forums for the Jet Black models as well, but not as many posts.

Wow that is awful. I would ask for a replacement. That is a defect.

Just noticed my iPhone 7 starting to chip at the bottom on the mic grill.at first I thought there was a spec of dirt and when I rubbed it off, the paint actually came off instead. This is really disappointing.

This is a fault with the Series 7000 aluminum. Not limited to iPhones. It has to do with micro flaws in the anodization.

Generally, Apple is not covering it under warranty (although I vehemently think that they should). Some people have gotten lucky. Some people have been denied.

I would be persistent and insist you escalate the case up if you get denied. Document pictures. Email Tim Cook.

Nothing will be done until a critical mass of complaints is reached. Right now, it's in the minority.

For those on the fence between this and Jet Black, my Jet Black in the Apple Leather case has yet to pick up any scratches, even on the exposed bottom.

Phoned up Apple Care and they couldn't get me an appointment at the Genius Bar today coz it was fully booked. He did mention that this issue seems to be on the rise. I've been using the Apple leather case for a month now and I was just yesterday admiring how the bottom part managed to stay pristine while fully exposed and now this happens.

I have paint chips around the 7+ camera. Not on the lens itself, but on the raised bits directly next to the lens. Around 4 sand sized dots.

Putting the phone in a caudabe sheath case did not help.

Anyone else having similar issues?

The black and slate iPhone 5 was worse. People were getting chipped phones brand new out of the box. It was Apple's first time anodizing thin metal with a dark color and it didn't turn out so well. It's the reason why we have Space Gray.

The chipping we're seeing now is due to a micro flaw in the anodization process. The flaw doesn't reveal itself until much later. Apple is manufacturing millions upon millions of iPhones, so it's inevitable that some of them will be flawed.

I have this issue on mine. It has been in a spigen case since the day I got it. Chipping on speaker grill.

Apparently there have been people with the jet black dealing with this issue as well. I had that issue with my space grey iPhone 6 when I had it in a snap on back style case. I took the case off and there was some of the space grey adonization that flaked off the phone and ended up stuck to the case.
