Following tradition, a new report out of Apple's supply chain is hinting that the company "may need to contend with a supply shortage" for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, citing vague issues with "faulty components" as the central problem (via Nikkei). Similar stories have emerged before the launch of the new iPhone nearly every year, stemming from Apple's annual late-summer production ramp-up ahead of the September iPhone reveal.
Apple is said to be staying close to its launch schedule from last year, which could lead to low supply "during the first round of the rollout," resulting in low yield rates, higher costs for manufacturers, and subsequently less volume to deliver to customers. Yuanta Investment Consulting analyst Jeff Pu believes total iPhone 7 builds to be 10 million less than that of the iPhone 6s last year.

Continuing the usual doom-and-gloom sentiment regarding Apple's 2016 iPhone sales, the new report points to "weakening demand" for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus as a contribution to manufacturing numbers falling as well. Apple's own orders are said to be "conservative" this year compared to years past, with individual components dropping precipitously year-over-year. According to various sources, core processor chips "may drop up to 15 percent," and panel orders "are dropping around 20 percent," both compared with the company's 2015 supply chain orders.

Although it's true that the iPhone 7 will be a modest update on the iPhone 6s, like every model before it, the 2016 iPhone is expected to see a heavy influx of pre-orders the day it goes live on Apple's website, currently rumored for September 9. Users will then have to wait a few weeks to get their hands on the smartphone, with a launch either on September 16 or September 23.

I'm 90 % sure I'm hanging onto my 2 year old 6 plus as long as I can- no compelling reason to change.

No wonder they're not forecasting big sales -

I admit I'm an apple fan boy but Apple ??? come on. I was playing with a Samsung s7 and the screen which goes to the edges and superb camera makes IPhone 6 and it seems 7 look really dated -

I think Apple will sell a lot of iPhones this time, again, but I don' t think they will be iPhones 7.
Why?
-touch disease . The News has been spread. People with an iPhone 6, that intended to keep it for another year, are starting to wonder if it will be wiser to upgrade anyway, before it breaks down. We' ll see a lot of used iPhone 6 on sale.
-with the lack of a headphone jack and new design, people will choose for a $100 cheaper iPhone 6s or a SE .

So they will sell a large number of iPhones, but the mix will be different. Less newer models, but more older models.
The only way to counter this is that the iPhone 6s or SE could be cheaper but with 16gb base models, and the 7 to be $100 more expensive, but with 32gb base.

For me, I'm looking forward to the iphone 7, as I've made up my mind, I'm getting one.

I'm not sure how much touch disease means to anybody. I do agree there will be a lot of used iphone 6 on sale, it's the oldest of the guard so to speak so I expect there will be a lot on sale anyway. Headphone jack, yep a lot has been made about it, or lack of it, only a post-mortem of the sales will be able to determine if removing the headphone jack (if rumors are true) has any affect on sales, especially if apple replaces it with something better.

Doubtful. I know that a majority of 6+ owners will not be interested in an SE because, (A) it is smaller, and (B) looks like the 5S. The removal of the headphone jack at this point is still only a rumor.

Wishfull thinking . By now it is pretty obvious the headphone jack is gone on the iPhone 7. Whether you like it or not...

If I had an iPhone 6 right now and had the feeling it would get a defect, and all the hassle around warranty, I would sell it now and get a 6s or a 7. Apple has to be very smart at storage tiers and pricing to avoid the 6s(+) being a better seller than the 7(+) .

In reality, the 6s is a much better iPhone than the 6 than just the incremental update that it was called. it is a lot faster and future proof , has 3D Touch , better build quality , etc.
At this point having an even faster soc, doesn' t make sense or have real life benefits. iOS 10 beta runs really smooth on my iPhone 6s, no hiccups, etc.
But perhaps the 7 will have some real upgrades instead of a better camera and a faster soc...

You are free to embrace a rumor. Doing so doesn't convert the "rumor" to "fact". That rumor may turn out to be true, THAT would be the time it becomes a fact. So until then the only thing "obvious" to me is that a lot of people are getting torqued up over a rumor.

I've already posted a video of the iphone 7, which quite definitely doesn't have an audio jack. What more proof do you want?

(See earlier in the thread).

Without a fresh redesign, there will be a shortage… of customers lol.

On the other hand, iPhone 6 users suffering from "touch disease" and in need of a new phone could boost sales numbers.

All this is to build the hype so people snap up one when the pre-release sales open up.

Yet Apple are the masters of this!
Yes Indeed...

You've said it best, the Apple Hype Machine originally created by Master Salesman Steve Jobs is one of his finest accomplishments. Taking a page from decades old "smoke and mirrors" salesmanship, Jobs could whip the crowd into a buying frenzy no matter what he had to sell. And sell it he did. "Magical and Revolutionary" "It Just Works" were but two of his refrains used to drive them wild in anticipation. The ultimate narcissist even before social media created a nation of self centered dolts, Steve Jobs and the cult like followers created Apple's wealth.

It's amazing how many tens of millions fall for that folderol, but we're smarter, right?

What else is new? It is the same thing every year. Apple constrains supply to get that long wait and push that "false sense of short supply" to try and drive up sales.

I think you are underestimating intelligence of the usual Apple users. Of course they are great at marketing. But the products should be good as well, we are not that stupid.

Surprise Sursprise

Not surprised but this is becoming ********!

Tim Cook's previous job netting him THE BEST in the BUSINESS (regardless of industry) how to properly setup supply chain according to satisfy demand volume, spare parts as well as least cost on contract with severe penalties against suppliers!

This is the same:
Damn case, very slight moditication (barely affects cost nor supply chain demands)
Same damn screen - closer to the glass, maybe (but Samsung, LG, Sony, etc can do this without a hiccup)
TMSC is capable of supplying the demand - new A10 chip fab.
Let's see ... M10, transistors, speakers, camera, buttons, LTE chipset, iOS etc etc etc there is NOTHING in the supply chain stating ANYTHING would be amis!

Then SUDDENLY 1 week before announcement the frenzy machine starts, results:
Outside store lineups! (then again whom am I to kid this happens regardless)
Pre-orders skyrocket! (get your credit cards and ApplePay 1 step pay ready)
lineups for day 1,2,and 3 purchasing up to 2/person (and yet those with 10 members over 16 in a family go maxing out)
Kijiji, Craigslist, Macrumors, ehmac, etc get flooded with ridiculous pricing with $200-500US market as "supplies of iPhone 6SE/7 dwindle quickly to nothing in less than 4hrs!

There has been absolutely NO recent earthquakes, hurricanes, psunami's etc except for 4-5mths ago ONLy affecting Sony's chip and camera business. Rumors have long told of Apple going away from Sony so again NOTHING!

Apple common now ... get on top of this crap!
CEO Tim Cook has a UNIQUE insight to this and should be reprimanded ... oh wait he's too busy practicing his iPhone announcement speech.

Ridiculous

Probably doing what HE thinks should be done and not a bunch of random internet posters.

Quite possibly ... but I think having the supply chain not affecting projected demand to fulfill orders, purhcases etc is doing what SHOULD be done: after all it affects revenues, perceived product quality at launch, and their performance. Investors look at such with stock ... lower sales due to more demand than supply, considerably so, affects revenues and thus profits. But I'm an internet random poster, what do I know.

You know what, I'm a random internet poster also and just observing the CEO of Apple may be doing what is best for the launch as opposed to the speculation of what he is doing.

Business wise, Apple has very smart people in charge.
I guess they are accepting a small decline in sales this year, and come out swinging the next year. It is all about managing expectations. Wall Street expected that after iPhone 6 super cycle, the 6s would show the same growth. That would have been impossible .
Now that Wall Street expectations have leveled to a more realistic point of view , Apple has time to prepare for the next super cycle next year. And in the mean while Apple will be able to buy back more stock at a lower price.
In the meantime Apple services revenues will continue to grow, iPad revenue are already stabilizing and growing a bit, and because of newer mac(books pro) revenue will increase also.
Next year iPhone 8/anniversary edition super cycle, and revenue will rise even further , records will be broken, etc.
And hoping for some great AR product in the next 2 years, and a car in the next 4 years, etc.

Apple doomed? I don' t think so...

How would one know what the sales of an unannounced product will be? Or is it tell people you are sending a person to the moon but go to Mars instead?
