This is going to be a terrible problem for all those people who drive off a wintry cliff and can't pull off their gloves to make a call before Annie Wilkes gets to their car.

Ya. It's also gonna be a problem for the unsavory type to use a device with a fingerprint on it.

I see this as added security.

*sigh*

Why bother to research anything before publishing it as fact?

So you can 100% get to the passcode screen on an iPhone 7.

Raise to wake, swipe to camera, hit preview last photo lower left, touch view all upper right.

Passcode screen appears.

This is going to be an even bigger shock for my parents than removing the headphone jack. Even though they both had iPhones with Touch ID they couldn’t wrap their head around it and didn’t want to trust it and still unlocked their iPhones with the pin code. This is going to be a rude awakening for them.

Anyone who buys an iPhone 7 in the northeast this winter should return it within the 14 day period and trade down to the 6s.

Buttongate.

Here come the fandroid trolls.

Glovesgate

can't think of any clever gate for this. I give up

This will be the death of Apple

I almost feel bad that each one of you think you are funny. Almost.

Many of your comments seems to imply that you didn't understand the article.

The difference between iPhones 6 and 7 is that even with gloves that are touch screen sensitive (this does not mean it will register your fingerprint), one is able to unlock it manually with passcode with gloves on with iPhones 6 but one will need to take the gloves off for iPhones 7 because there's no actual button to press and will need skin contact.

So in that sense, there is a difference.

So far there's two workarounds that people above mentioned:

1. Use assistive touch
2. Try to access photo album from camera by swiping right

Both are workarounds and surely not Apple's intended solution. Probably will come as a software update.

Yeah, that's not convoluted at all! There used to be many quicker ways to get to the passcode entry screen. Updated the post with new wording, though, because you're right. I didn't remember that method.

If it is too cold to expose skin for even a couple of seconds to touch the screen, isn't the temperature already easy below what the iPhone would tolerate? Wouldn't the phone/ battery undergo a thermal shutdown?

That is what I dealt with last year--i could make a quick call, but any long winter use in a cold car resulted in it shutting down.

I wonder how this will affect cases like the LifeProof Fre. It has a thin layer of plastic where the Home Button is, so I can still use Touch ID through it. I guess it should work the same way on the iPhone 7 since the plastic doesn't hinder detection of the finger.

Agree. Touch ID requires direct contact with a fingerprint.
How is this news?

With my iPhone 6, I put the phone in a small ziplock bag if I'm doing something outside and want to protect the phone from dirt, dust, whatever. I can unlock the phone using Touch ID through the ziplock bag no problem. Doesn't sound like that's the case with the 7 phones as they require direct contact with skin.

Not sure how this is really an issue. All you could do before, assuming you have touch ID enabled, is check the lock screen by pressing the button with gloves on.

Then enter your passcode, if you had touch screen compatible, or thin enough, gloves.

I'm quite glad to be keeping my replaced 6S Plus that I literally got replaced on the 9th. I'm used to 3D touch and the Macbook keyboard, and this issue really doesn't bother me but I'm quite content with the 6S Plus - more so that I just got a fresh one after the other one had many dents and scratches but replaced under warranty.

Not to say I don't like the 7, but I think it's quite easy to retain the 6S until something "new" comes next year. Same screen, camera isn't a big change for me really, I have 128GB storage which seems to be the standard now with the 7 order numbers, iOS 10 since beta 1, really not missing out on much in my opinion.

As discovered by Myke Hurley (via Daring Fireball), iPhone 7 and 7 Plus users are going to have a tough time unlocking their devices during wintertime. As it turns out, the new "solid-state" Home button on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus requires skin contact to function.

If you put on a pair of gloves or cover your finger with the sleeve of a shirt and attempt to open the iPhone 7, the Home button will not respond to a press unless it's touching skin. And because the iPhone 7 uses the redesigned Lock screen in iOS 10, there's no easy way to bring up the passcode entry screen to unlock the phone manually.

We tested with a pair of gloves that are designed for touch screens and while we could unlock the iPhone 6s Plus with the gloves, that wasn't possible with the iPhone 7 Plus. There are reports suggesting some of these types of gloves do work, however, so it may vary based on the material of the gloves.

The redesigned Home button in the iPhone 7 is no longer a physical button -- it's flush with the iPhone and uses haptic feedback to give the sensation of button presses. Because it's requiring skin contact to unlock the device, it's likely the iPhone 7 is using the Touch ID fingerprint sensor to register touch.

While skin contact is required to unlock the phone, the new "Raise to Wake" functionality still allows the Lock screen to be viewed without a touch, so it continues to be possible to view incoming notifications. Fully unlocking the phone will require a free finger that's unobscured by fabric.

don't see the issue here ... INCOMING ANDROID TROLLS ...
