If it is too cold to expose skin for even a couple of seconds to touch the screen, isn't the temperature already easy below what the iPhone would tolerate? Wouldn't the phone/ battery undergo a thermal shutdown?

You live in Arizona, don't you?

Yeah, that's not convoluted at all! There used to be many quicker ways to get to the passcode entry screen. Updated the post with new wording, though, because you're right. I didn't remember that method.

Well I didn't say it wasn't convoluted.

I was just saying that the original statement of "And because the iPhone 7 uses the redesigned Lock screen in iOS 10, there's no way to bring up the passcode entry screen to unlock the phone manually." was not accurate.

It's definitely an issue, it's just not as severe as "impossible."

Nothing against you at all... but it's such a race to post news anymore that grammar, spelling, peer review, and sometimes facts are an after thought in the race to publish stories.

It's not just here... it's every news outlet. As a consumer of journalism, it's sad and sometimes frustrating to see.

(I hope I didn't make a grammar, spelling, or factual mistake above. That would be embarrassing :-D)

It's "adaptation" :p

I don't get it. Is it really an issue?
I think it's a pretty big deal. I use latex gloves for work all the time and the iPhone 6 screen was always pretty good at responding even with the gloves on. I just tried my new iPhone 7 matte black 128gb with gloves and the home button is not responding at all. I can still move around on the touch screen, like texting and what not. But I just tried to leave the safari app by touching the home button and I cannot go home. There is no way for me to leave any app if I have the gloves on let alone unlocking the screen. I have to physically take off my glove to unlock or leave an app or use the multitask gesture. Which is strange since I can still use the touch screen like normal but the home button has become completely useless with gloves on. This In my opinion can decide for future customers if this is the right phone for them

Not sure how this is really an issue. All you could do before, assuming you have touch ID enabled, is check the lock screen by pressing the button with gloves on.

It's a big issue when you consider the very small population with handicaps who can't physically or accurately place their finger on the home button. It's especially surprising considering the Apple's recent push to improve accessibility.

I can't see Apple not finding a work around. And soon.

Because before you could swipe to unlock and use gloves to enter your password after waking up the phone with gloved hands.

Plus this means the home button will be useless for all other functions if you have gloves on--not just unlocking. It's using Touch ID to recognize a finger, not just to unlock.
How many of us actually do that regularly though?

I live in Colorado and in the winter it's just plain easier to unlock it with TouchID than having to type it out with gloved hands.

Sooo relevant. lol

I'm sorry, but what handicaps would make this an issue? No fingers? Then why are you using an iPhone?

Particularly if you have an alphanumeric password with symbols and all. Mine is 28 characters.

Yes, it was not accurate, so I fixed it. Mistakes happen. I'm human. I learn from my mistakes and I'm always super appreciative when someone points out an error so I can correct it, so thank you. I just didn't happen to remember that method worked to get to the passcode screen. It wasn't a matter of time or rushing to publish something.

Fixed with Apple iDongleGlove! Only $199.99 to unlock your iPhone 7 during winter season.

Thank you for specifying color and size of the device. It really helps.

That Taptic Engine... Really? What an incredible waste of space. The engine in the 6S/+ is swell enough...

I'm lost.

Regarding the article, though, I feel like the only time somebody wouldn't slip off their thumb piece would be if you were on an Everest expedition, or cutting a Christmas tree down in remote Alaska when it's -40°F.

Many users are mentioning to go into the camera app or via notifications, however once there the home button will not allow to app switch, unless you 3D Touch the left side of the screen. I find the 3D Touch app switch a hit or mis, in any case winter is going to be inconvenient for glove users unless Apple releases an intuitive solution.

Assistive Touch is a temp solution.

I think what's getting lost is that this is not just about unlocking. If you want to use the home button at all, even after you've unlocked the phone, you won't be able to with gloves.

What the hell are you hiding on your phone, and more importantly, from who?

It's complex enough that someone won't know it and easy enough for me. Additionally it gives me a false sense of security :p Before that I used a 6 digit passcode because of my thumb.

But my fingerprint somehow healed back now and my thumb is working 100% of the time for Touch ID, I had burned it before so it was problematic as that is my main finger I use as a right handed person to open my phone.

As discovered by Myke Hurley (via Daring Fireball), iPhone 7 and 7 Plus users are going to have a tough time unlocking their devices during wintertime. As it turns out, the new "solid-state" Home button on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus requires skin contact to function.

If you put on a pair of gloves or cover your finger with the sleeve of a shirt and attempt to open the iPhone 7, the Home button will not respond to a press unless it's touching skin. And because the iPhone 7 uses the redesigned Lock screen in iOS 10, there's no easy way to bring up the passcode entry screen to unlock the phone manually.

We tested with a pair of gloves that are designed for touch screens and while we could unlock the iPhone 6s Plus with the gloves, that wasn't possible with the iPhone 7 Plus. There are reports suggesting some of these types of gloves do work, however, so it may vary based on the material of the gloves.

The redesigned Home button in the iPhone 7 is no longer a physical button -- it's flush with the iPhone and uses haptic feedback to give the sensation of button presses. Because it's requiring skin contact to unlock the device, it's likely the iPhone 7 is using the Touch ID fingerprint sensor to register touch.

While skin contact is required to unlock the phone, the new "Raise to Wake" functionality still allows the Lock screen to be viewed without a touch, so it continues to be possible to view incoming notifications. Fully unlocking the phone will require a free finger that's unobscured by fabric.

#FirstWorldProblems

What a non-issue. Here is every possible solution or work-around:

1) Buy the gloves that *do* work - some do as the article suggests
2) Use your nose
3) Assistive touch
4) Camera roll passcode work-around
5) Take off your glove for 2 seconds - there's no where on planet earth where this will freeze your finger off
6) Turn off your passcode
7) Wait till you're somewhere warmer

This generation has grown up to be a bunch of entitled, whiny children.
