I live in a winter state. I can't think of a time where I had a touch screen phone and needed to use my phone with my gloves on. I even own those touch screen gloves and most of the time I don't even use gloves when I'm out in the cold anyway. More incentive to actually get out of the cold. I'm not texting in the snow outside.
Use public transit much, lol.

I checked out the 7 when I tried (and failed) to buy a watch... I don't like the touchpad thing. The mechanical button of the 6S is so much nicer.

I did like the antenna bands.

Hopefully the 2017 iPhone is cool enough to get me to upgrade. Until then I like my 6S just fine.

Just did a small experiment to try two different styluses (styli? You get the picture). Neither worked.

I tried pressing the center of the home button and pressing both the capacitive ring and the home button at the same time. I wasn't prompted to input my password.

I used an Adonit Pro with a precision disc and an Adonit Jot Script 2 that's battery operated. Both work on the screen, of course.

I don't have a rubber or foam ripped stylus on me at the moment or I would have tried those as well.

Push the wake button? I mean, it's named that after all.
I'm not sure how that follows.

I was saying that the home button won't work at all with gloves on--not just for unlocking. So if you're in an app and want to go to the homescreen, you won't be able to (without assistive touch). If you want to pull up multi-tasking, you won't be able to.

I think people are confused because Touch ID is what is being used to recognize a press in all these situations, even when it's unrelated to unlocking the phone and Touch ID technology. It's the metal Touch ID ring that's being used--not the fingerprint scan. They probably did it this way because otherwise pressing anywhere near the home button would be interpreted as a press or tap, as it's all one solid surface.

Press the power button instead?
With raise to wake you don't even need to that

Yeah, I'll take the headphone jack.

Seems like the Taptic Engine is using up a lot of space we could use for a UNIVERSAL connector that is compatible with the widest range of audio accessories.

On top of that, you can now unlock your phone under all conditions.

Only Apple could have done this.

Why don't you turn in assistive touch. Then you can push them home button and bring up the screen for pass code unlock.
Still won't be able to unlock with gloves on

If your wearing gloves that dont respond to capacitive touch, how are you using the app, what are you going to do if you bring up multitasking?

Mod posted a few pages back that some gloves work. I don't know if he specified a type or brand.

Not true. I can put my 6 in a ziplock bag and unlock it with Touch ID while the phone is in the bag.
You are right I just tried this!
Makes me wonder about those who practice "safe" iPhone useage are now going to do now.

Come on folks, we know that Apple will be offering a mechanical Home button dongle that you just connect to the lightning port. I don't see what the big deal is, you would only need it during the winter anyways.

My point might not have been clear. If your gloves work on a capacitive screen then they will work on the home button. So the same problem with using gloves on every other iPhone is the same problem with the 7/7+

I use Touch ID to unlock my phone anyway, so I usually just take a glove off to unlock it.

Anyway, I only wear gloves if it's below like 20°F and I try not to use my phone in the cold, the battery drains very quickly. I have a pair of capacitive gloves so I'll see if they work.

You could never unlock a phone with gloves on.

Yes you can with touchscreen gloves. Just tried it on my 6s. Naturally TouchID doesn't work, but you can still type in your passcode and operate the phone after unlocking without ever taking your gloves off. That's a feature in a country where it's a really good idea to wear gloves outside for at least one third of a year. Seems like my likelyhood of getting the iPhone 7 became even lower than before.

This is only a problem for the very small minority group of people with no phone security on their iPhone at all. Which is a very bad idea anyway so really this shouldn't be a problem for anyone...

Incorrect. I have TouchID with passcode fallback enabled and with my 6s I can access and use my phone with touchscreen gloves on. With the iPhone 7 that isn't possible with most touchscreen gloves as you can't get to the passcode prompt. So your "very small minority" of people actually consists of millions of people living in areas where there's actually a proper winter for a considerable part of the year.

I use plastic gloves a lot for dermatalogical reasons. I guess this means I'm gonna be SOOL? I won't be able to upgrade my 6s when the time comes. :(

Maybe the rumoured iris scanner will save me.

Did you read the article?

We tested with a pair of gloves that are designed for touch screens and while we could unlock the iPhone 6s Plus with the gloves and use the touch screen, that wasn't possible with the iPhone 7 Plus -- the Home button wouldn't activate.

It seems like there are some touchscreen gloves that are actually able to activate the new home button, but as indicated in the article and in comments here, it won't be the case with many gloves that have worked just fine with older iPhones.

can't think of any clever gate for this. I give up

Print-gate, or fingerprint-gate. Think about it, what's really going on here is that there is now no way to bypass the fact that your phone will scan your finger print and log it every time you wake it up. And we have already seen that Uncle Sam will do everything he can to use your phone agents you in a court of law. I have a round sticker on my home button rendering my iPhone 6+ finger print scanner useless. If your telling me I can no longer do this then the iPhone 7 is a no sell to me and and my family and we will be switching our MobilOS.

NO, NO, NO.
