Great idea! However, I would hope an adapter will be created. We all know adapters will make money to ;). Besides with out an adapter all the credit card readers and existing headphones will have to be replaced with new ones for the lightening port. Maybe I missed it but I'm surprised they don't already have them for the newer port. Bluetooth credit card readers yet (maybe to insecure?).

The problem with bluetooth wireless at this point in time is that it does not (to my knowledge) support any lossless codec of CD quality or higher. Apt-X has been put in place to help ameliorate this, but even still, wireless bluetooth audio is still an inferior audio connection over an analog headphone port.

Before people panic over Apple's obsession with thinness, realize removing the 3.5mm jack would save some internal space regardless of how thin the iPhone 7 will be. That means that the iPhone 7 could have the same thickness as the 6 while having a larger battery due to internal space saved.

Two components would be removed by this move, the relatively large 3.5mm jack module and the DAC (digital to analog converter), which would now be integrated in headphones rather than inside your phone. The DAC is one of the largest component on the PCB right now, I believe only the SoC, NAND and LTE modem are larger.

Personally, I don't think the iPhone 7 should be thinner than the 6, but I would still appreciate if the 3.5mm jack got removed.

They can't remove the DAC. The internal speakers still need analog signal.

Yes the phone still has to have a DAC inside, so my guess is they will find a way to send analogue audio through the lightning port besides digital audio.

There's a huge gain. The thinner they make something, the less materials are needed, which saves them money. Multiply that by millions of phones - $$$$$$$$$

Ive must have nightmares at night......

Must make iPhone thinner must make iPhone thinner must make iPhone thinner..

They are waaayyy too obsessed with thinness for no reason or gain.

Apple killed the CD, point and shoot cameras, Flash, Netbooks, etc. Next up, the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The CD was actually killed by the MP3. Netbooks were never alive, fun to use but never alive... oh wait, the rMB is a Netbook. Sorry, never mind.

In all seriousness, I am fine with the disappearing of the 3.5mm jack because I have the Beats Wireless 2, but honestly, it is a very risky move.

Nothing to do with that. The original iphone was innovative. First of its kind. What new features can they add already? 3d touch? come on. The only thing they can come up with is making the phone thinner and thinner. It is sad and pathetic.

I'm ok with all this but hopefully they don't make the same mistake as the 30 Pin switch.

Just include a free adapter the first year with every phone.

Don't make my wired headphones obsolete unless I spend $30 on a hard to get adapter day one.

I'm ok with losing the headphone jack. I've already made the jump to Bluetooth earbuds. But I completely sympathize with those who are pissed by this move. I also predict that the iPhone 7 will come with NO earbuds! Maybe the 7 Plus will come with a pair of Bluetooth earbuds...maybe.

The phone is thin enough. I tried using my phone without a (thin) case for a week and it just felt uncomfortable to hold and too slippery. Even if Apple packs in a 3,100 battery with a thinner phone, then just keep the phone the same size it is now, and make it a 3,500 or more. Will the camera be protruding further out now too? Also I think not including lightning earbuds would be huge mistake, unless they include like, more than 5 3.5mm jacks to lightning adapters because people will loose them and I'm sure Apple will charge $20 for one.

I don't use the headphone jack since I use Bluetooth headphones predominantly, but I'm sure im the minority.

If they can't include lightning headphones or even a lightning --> headphone port adapter, that's very cheap of Apple

Who else thinks the wireless charging will be similar to the Apple Watch? I can see there being a circular magnet where the Apple logo is on the phone that clicks onto it....hopefully without the bulge the Watch has on the back.

Absolutely right! Replace that thoroughly ubiquitous, no-steep-licensing-fees standard that "just works" with everything with a proprietary standard controlled only by Apple.

And have no way to get double duty out of them with even existing Apple products without paying what will almost certainly be a steep premium for a lightning-to-3.5mm adapter.

The Future! I love it!

If they do wireless charging, I hope its compatible with whats already out for nokia etc. I dont really see the point if not for using someone else's wireless charger while away. And some cafeshops etc. already have wireless charging buildt into their tables and it would be a shame not to be able to use those.

I admire Apple for not playing it safe and having the balls to try something like this.
They must be the only company left that challenges the status quo in technology and takes risks.
Dropping the audio jack is bold and daring. That's the Apple I like to see.
Playing it safe takes you no where new.

While you want to use Morse Code only when transmitting and receiving Signals, I can assure you, the general public would still appreciate being able to have a conversation via the iPhone.

So, no, the DAC won't be removed. You need it for the internal speakers.

Get rid of all wires. Water can still go in that lighting hole.

Can't do that- too much money in proprietary jacks controlled by a single company. Lightning is VERY important to persist until it becomes somewhat ubiquitous (though it can never get as ubiquitous as the 3.5mm jack). Then, Apple will need "thinner" again and roll out (proprietary) Lightning 2, so that we can re-buy everything again.
