"According to Fast Company's source, Apple may not ship Lightning-connected EarPods alongside the iPhone 7, instead opting to sell noise-canceling Lightning-connected headphones separately"

This would be a step too far, even for Apple. If it's true, this would signal a shift to complete arrogance and customer abuse. I would sell all my Apple stock if that rumor was true.

*and if I actually owned any Apple stock.

Customers, and the market, will not react well if Apple comes out with a new design that could be perceived as another way to "gouge" their customers. Eliminating the head phone jack and not providing wireless earbuds would be a big mistake.. I'm almost certain that they could even provide wireless earbuds and charge an extra 15-20 dollars per device, and they would be far better off with their customers than eliminating the headphone jack, no longer providing headphones in the box, and then trying to capitalize by making their customers spend an extra 50-100 dollars in order to actually listen to what's on their phones.

@unobtainium --- Well look at that, almost at the exact same time. Funny.

I'm ok with losing the headphone jack. I've already made the jump to Bluetooth earbuds. But I completely sympathize with those who are pissed by this move. I also predict that the iPhone 7 will come with NO earbuds! Maybe the 7 Plus will come with a pair of Bluetooth earbuds...maybe.

It will defiantly come with headphones. Apple Music is a big part of Apples plans and future. If anything they will be better in some way to make up for the missing port. "The new EarPods connect directly with lightning connecter, allowing much higher bitrates and higher fidelity music."

They'll release this without the headphone jack. But then they'll release two types of cases. One with the hump for better battery life and one with the hump and a headphone jack build into it. That can easily be made inside their current hump designed case. But all that will come later, just before iPhone 7s hits the market. This not only allows more battery life but brings back your 3.5mm. And the cost will be some crazy number like 129.99 for the one with the jack and battery vs 99.99 for just the battery. They always have a way of making things come out just right, of course at a higher cost.

And it shouldn't be long until the protruding camera must go... and then the battery too. Shift both of those to this accessory and they might be able to double the average sale (basically for stuff that used to be included IN the phone) while still claiming "thinner & lighter" at each launch.

Why include that pesky (heavy) battery? Take that out and they could get much thinner and much lighter.

And why keep including that protruding camera that will only protrude further with an even thinner phone design? Physics isn't going to allow an overly-thin camera built in.

Wireless charging is useless... Ok it's nice and stuff that you put your phone on something and then bam! It charges... But you can't use your phone nicely or it will stop charging. People saying that wireless charging and lightning headphones is just nuts...

It is asking to much to USE the frigging phone WHILE listening to music AND charging? Removing jack is not the problem for me per se, but making my phone less useful because the motives above is the problem...

If Apple get rid of the 3.5mm jack, they'll be selling a phone without AptX and therefore it will be the worst sounding smartphone on the market!!

Oh and don't forget the NFC is crippled so you'll have to faf around pairing stuff like its 2003

just asking... probably a dumb question. Could they move the 3.5mm headphone jack to the lighting cable instead of keeping it on the phone?

I wouldn't call the original iPhone innovative seeing as it lacked basic features of handsets costing less at the time.

And yet it redefined what a smartphone should be. I'll admit my Palm Treo had more overall features but it wasn't a better phone than or as cool as my original iPhone. What really made the iPhone stand out was the non-stylus required touch screen and Apple signature intuitive GUI. Of course as the generations roll on the iPhone becomes more complicated and less intuitive.

As for the removal of the headphone jack I think Apple IS arrogant enough to do it and not only not include an adapter but also not even make one available at launch, except one will be included in every pair of Beats headphones. Easy way to stop including headphones. Saves Apple a ton of $. They'll also push BT earphones even though they truly sound awful compared to wired headphones. If this scenario does come to pass I know I'll have to pass on the 7 until a cheap adapter is available. I assume the usual Chinese 3rd parties will rush to provide an option.

Yes, but they didn't say which part of the iPhone was getting thinner....

Don't you think that since the adapter will have to have a chip (DAC) anyway, Apple will stick some proprietary (approved by Apple) tech in there so the knockoffs struggle to actually work dependably (like early Lightning cables)?

And don't you think there will be some kind of evaluation process required by Apple for approval so that only Beats headphones will work with this new option for at least a few months (again like Lightning-based accessories)?

They will include the adapter. iPhone is their bread and butter. They are not going to alienate everyone right off the bat with i7.

As best rumored features never actually come out (liquid metal, saphire glass etc) while worst actually do (bendgate, mapgate, antennagate...), we now know that:
- iPhone 7 won't be waterproof,
- iPhone 7 won't have wireless charging,
- iPhone 7 won't have a headphone jack.

It's about time! I am over wires! For the people saying they won't purchase the new iPhone if no 3.5mm included, THANK YOU...you'll make it even easier for me to get my iPhone 7 Plus in the Fall. :)

Get rid of it already. Supprised it's lasted this long. If a better solution exists, bring it on.

I honestly don't think the market is ready for devices without 3.5 mm jacks. If Apple goes this route, I fear people will jump ship.

I'll go further! They'll jump off bridges!
Imagine! A different headphone jack! The humanity!!

We need a specific definition of "better." Some are going to passionately argue for waterproof and others for wireless charging. But others can easily fault the latter (and already have in this same thread).

Myself? I've been around the block enough to know that when a dirt-cheap, ubiquitous, patent-unhindered, "just works" standard is replaced by a "better" option that is completely controlled by only one company, the result tends to be great for that company('s bean counters and maybe the shareholders) but not necessarily better for that company's consumers.
