Add wireless charging and iTunes syncing, and it can be waterproof.
WiFi iTunes syncing is already a thing, though I think you do need to plug it in once to set it up. Maybe do some sort of "tap to setup" for the phone, the way you can do with the Apple TV and iPhones now.

Indeed, the feedback is so convincing (from playing with the new MacBook in the store), that they'll probably get some complaints (from the much wider iPhone audience) that they were sold a phone with an actual button instead of "the new one".

What's funny is having someone try it and then turn the MacBook off and try again. They're always surprised there's no more click with the power off. That's how good the feedback is on a Macbook.

Who are these jabronis that need to submerge their phones in water? Did they see some goof at a party do it with a Sony Xperia in a water filled glass a few years ago?
I heard stories from some Qualcomm friends, years ago, of some party where folks got caught up in an enthusiastic round of "push each other into the pool"... And there were a surprising number of phones that needed replacing the next day.

I'm guessing it's not for swimmers, but to eliminate "water damage" as a source of trouble. They can't ascribe any level of water protection to it before making it actually waterproof, because there will always be that 5% who have to push the limit. Just like they don't say the Apple Watch is waterproof, but some swim with it already.

Hmm don't see on these pics

You'll still be able to feel it because of the Touch ID activation ring.

I'd consider the Touch ID activation ring as part of the home button (it is a single unit). So when they say it is going to be flush I'm assuming they mean that too...

If this happens, I would expect them to completely do away with the activation ring. Now that iOS 10 requires you to press the home button to unlock the phone, no need for the activation ring, the phone will simply scan your fingerprint as you press the button (no need for it to "detect" the finger first).

And for all other use cases of TouchID in apps, the phone prompts you to scan your finger, so then again, no need for it to detect a finger as it can start "looking for" the fingerprint as soon as the prompt appears.

Add wireless charging and iTunes syncing, and it can be waterproof.

Implementing those features would enable the phone to be fully encased in a 100% seamless clear case and be completely waterproof without any seals, gaskets, or possibility of leaking.
There's this little problem that air still needs to be able to enter and exit the case in order for microphone and speakers to work. You know, just in case you want to use your phone to make phone calls. ;)

Well, they're not, so no, that's not what it means.

I guess it is debatable if they are part of the same assembly. From iFixit teardown it sure looks like one unit. Although other photos show it in exploded view it doesn't really come like that....

Either way you can feel the ring because the button itself is depressed. If the button is flush then the ring (if even needed) would most likely be too.

It's about time, Third year in a row I had to get a replacement phone because of the home button stopped working. A notification light embedded underneath with the Touch ID sensor would be so cool, one can hope!

if it doesn't have a tactile feel, it's the worst home button ever.
if it does have a tactile feel, then I am okay with this.

I'm sure it will, the new track pads have no moving parts, but without looking you can't tell that its not 'pressing in' when its pressed

You could seal the speaker diaphragm against the case making it water proof and still allowing sound.

How about making the camera lens flush, Apple?
I prefer having a better camera than a flusher camera. and I don't want a phone as thick as my old iPhone 4 either. thus...camera ring.

ain't a big deal to anyone not anal about nonsense.

Apple will never make a claim of a waterproof anything. It will always be water resistant. They don't say the AW is waterproof for a very good reason: it isn't waterproof. It's water resistant. I never would, but some would say waterproof/water resistance is just semantics. Some would, but Apple won't. Waterproof has legal implications. Apple doesn't want or need that type of entanglement. If the phone has an IP68 rating, that would be great. If (highly unlikely) it has an IP69K rating, that would be phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal. But they ain't gonna call it waterproof. Neither should anyone else.

Woo Hoo! Now we can shower with our phones! Hasn't been an issue since 2007. Its practically waterproof now, other than to go swimming with it I can't really see why this is a hallmark feature.

You know, there's something called the 'outdoors' and some people work in an sometimes wet environment.

I repair iPhones. It is one unit.
