Id be all for it. I like the idea and loved it on Android. That being said, if they could do it where the home button ring lights up, that would be awesome if it just pulsed haha

I can see that. I guess what I meant but worded poorly is that now, I don't often check my phone unless I hear the notification sound. With the light, I could see my OCD self continually glancing to see if a light is blinking or not.

Yeah, I could see how that could drive a person a little crazy, but as others have said, you would presumably be able to turn it off like any other notification.

It's exactly "what that was about". I don't want it, so I bought a phone and bought into an ecosystem that doesn't have it.
Again, that's great. It doesn't change that what I was responding to not being related to that (which has been further addressed in a few posts that follow this one).

Very true. I keep losing sight that I could disable it.

You could possibly turn it off or not use it, but you won't be able to hide the "hole" in the bezel where the blinky light would be. That's especially true of the models with the white bezel... a big, ugly black hole...

Here we are, a year farther down the road, and Apple hasn't done it yet. If it hasn't happened yet, it won't happen in the future. Much hand-wringing and whinging, all for naught. Moving on.

Sometimes people are annoyed by things that I wouldn't even think to notice... in any case, on a black bezel phone it would probably be almost invisible.

Plenty of phones have had these lights simply behind the earpiece mesh where they couldn't be seen at all unless they are on (given that the earpiece is there anyway), others have had them as part of the home button simply lighting up or a ring around it, again something that is already there and doesn't look any different when the lights are not in use. There are fairly approachable implementations of it that have been done for some time by various other manufacturers that won't get in the way or be even noticeable.

Agreed. I will say though, I have sometimes wondered exactly why they never moved to implement it. I imagine it could be as easy as they simply have never felt compelled. But then I have wondered if there was a patent on it that kept them from doing so (not that patents do their job all of the time in the tech world).

Something like this maybe?

My old Touch Pro "breathed" when charging and when a notification came in it made a circular flash counterclockwise.

I don't really care one way or another about a notification light, but if anything, I would think it fosters less attachment. As you say, now you have to reach over and wake your phone every time you want to see if you've missed something. With a light, all you'd have to do is glance at it.

Exactly!

This comes up every single year.
No, Apple will not install any blinking Christmas lights besides the camera flash light in the back that you can enable for certain functions.

The camera flash in the back as a notification light is just irritating...how is that even reasonable.

I have a notification light for my iPhone on my wrist. Actually it's a notification vibration. I can feel it instead of having to see it.

Just a random, general thought I had. One thing I miss from my BlackBerry days (and currently a widely used android feature) is notification lights, letting you know you have a text/missed call/whatever without needing to even touch your phone. Maybe a group of 3 small lights, each a different/customizable color. One for missed calls, one for new texts, and a third that could be customized to whatever you want it to convey (i.e. new Facebook friend request, tweet notification from someone you follow, new email, etc.) You could get so much info just by looking at your phone this way.

I think Apple could elegantly incorporate a notification light(s) into the iPhone. Perhaps on the back to the right of the camera cluster, or on the front to the right of the speaker/camera cluster, or maybe both. What do you guys think?

As far as I know, you can use the flash led as a notification light. It's under Accessibility in Settings called "Flash LED for Alerts".

This is not an uncommon topic here.

I warn you that this thread will explode. There are two camps on MacRumors. Those who think this is a ridiculous and un-Apple idea and those who like the idea.

I'm in the second camp, but I've had my say on this more than once in the two or three other threads about it.

I've always wanted this feature as opposed to having the screen light up at every notification. The LED assistant (uses the flash LED) is the closest alternative, but that light is blinding and requires you to have your phone upside down.

I remember in the iPhone 5 rumor days that they would incorporate a LED for FaceTime in the front of the phone, but that sadly never came to fruition.

If the iPhone 8 winds up having an OLED display, Apple could then just power on part of the display, similar to the Always-On Display or Active Notifications you would find on Android, which would make the notification LED unnecessary.
