Poor your souls who MUST be the first one in the block, check every 5 minutes on UPS status, u get a locked phone.

Not sure what your saying. If you're implying that Apple only sells locked phones you're wrong.

I was also considering getting an unlocked phone form the US but it seems like it's nowhere near as easy as it is in the UK. They're available here day 1 and it's quite clear they're unlocked.

For whatever reason, Apple waits to start selling the "sim free" version in the US. Most other countries get the sim free or unlocked version right out of the gate. It's probably just a supply and demand issue, or possibly some agreement with the carriers here?

I think it is more to create artificial demand (sales expected to be low this year) and I agree with you it is an agreement with carriers to give them ability to charge extra 20-35 dollars for an "activation". I'm going to wait for a SIM free model:
1. They fix most of the issues by then
2. I use my Discover card and get 5% cashback bonus
3. I avoid 20 doolars activation fee

Just buy a Sprint or Verizon phone full price at Apple for full world-phone functionality, unlocked. I'm using the Sprint model with AT&T currently.

You are 100% correct. I'm on VZW on At&t now. It works better than Att model on Att. I had a chance to compare them.

The only problem that the iPhone I have produces a loud buzzing noise and camera noise and this is not the first one already. That's why I decided to wait till SIM free model and giv Apple one more chance. If not I go with Note 7 , I had it and I like it the same as iPhone 7+.

Also you cannot any longer buy VZW/Sprint model without VZW/Sprint account. Apple closed a loophole with reservation and paying full price at the store.

They didn't close the loophole. I picked up one just a couple of days ago. The terminology changed in the confirmation email for reservation, but the reps at the store have the power to just ring the phone up as a device-only unit. Not an issue at all, depending on the rep, of course...

Incorrect, you can still buy a Verizon/Sprint Model in store at full price and they won't ask you for your account info. They changed the wordings on the reservation e-mail but customers have reported that even after the wording change they were still able to buy the phone outright without any issues. It all depends on who you get.

I wonder if this year if Apple will let you do iup with a sim free since there are diff models. I'm on T-Mobile currently in iup. Would want to upgrade to a sim free version so that cdma option is viable

For what it's worth my company just received its first set of SIM-free A1661 phones from Apple Enterprise sales. These are sealed model A1661, and an empty SIM tray. No idea when consumers will be able to buy these.

Do you remember if these came with sim tray removal tool?

I can't see why not. Virgin Mobile isn't listed under the LTE, but you can bring your own phone to Virgin Mobile in the US, right?
Thanks. I've tried to research the small amount of information online about it. It's a bit conflicting though. I suppose I should just go in an actual store haha

get a t-mo version, its the same
I bought iPhone 7 plus MB T-mobile. When i inserted my T-Mobile SIM Card, it said that i have to call T-Mobile if i wanted to change to another SIM Card in the future. So T-Mobile doesn't really SIM free i think. I bought the full price and unlocked one.
